How about a NYC Pano?

Last night, was probably the most awesome light I've ever seen on the NYC Skyline. I was fortunate enough to be shooting from the perch of a building in Chelsea, with Vincent Laforet.

Well.

See it in original size (sorry for the watermark, but you'll get the idea!).

Shooting details: Canon 1Ds Mark III, with Canon 90mm TS/E on board, mounted on Really Right Stuff Pano rig and ballhead. ISO 100, 1/5th second @ f/8. Twenty 1Ds Mark III files, developed in ACR and stitched in PS CS3. Bit of curves adjustment, final straightening and sharpening.

Haven't decided yet but there's enough here that I could made some sub-shots out of this, easily.

Just beautiful.

A true benchmark on how to make a pano.

I do have one question. How important was the RRS pano setup in making this shot? I'm guessing at the distance you shot, the nodal point of the lens was superfluous, and that the pano gear was convenience and not a necessity. True or false?

Lots of nice detail in the full-size original, but the 2nd scene is much more engaging - tones and lighting. Holy depth of field, Batman.

Which body and lens did you use on these? How does the 50D compare?

Awesome light

We had almost the same effect yesterday between rain showers. Lots of dark clouds and the sun shining on the buildings. I really should start taking a camera with me to the office.

(Although the skyline of Antwerp is no match to that of NYC

)
