Re: anyone using the Tamron AF 180mm f/3.5 SP Di LD IF macro as a manual adapted lens?
Just because I always get annoyed coming across posts about lenses I'm interested in, where you never find out how things went, just updating this story here. Short version - this is a really nice lens and it works wonderfully adapted on 2x crop. For whatever reason it doesn't have the cachet of other classic macro lenses… -
Re: Dining Out
Hey Richard, Thanks for the kind words. As to HDR: I feel that everyone has a right to like or dislike any photo or processing or technique. What I don't get, is why a lot of photogs are so closed minded to it, it's just another process/tool. I view it as no different than using, say a large aperture while shooting to… -
Re: Christmas Candids
Thanks for your response and your questions, Ziggy, Virgina, Saurora and others. I think you are seeing what I was pleased with - soft shadows, balanced accurate color, and catchlights as well. I used a 580ex on ETTL with a 6 inch high foam (white card) style diffuser on the back of the flash head. I oriented the flash… -
Re: canon 450D/xsi soft focus? help
Time for some formal testing of camera/lens combinations. 1) Basic AF accuracy is best accomplished using a flat target, i.e. a brick wall or other large textured surface. If a camera/lens cannot accomplish this task, it has no chance of passing any subsequent AF tests including real world use. Make sure that the target is… -
Re: Help Me Pick the Right Nikkor Lens!
Thanks again, Bill! I was out a bit earlier this evening and did manage to pick up the 50mm f/1.8. It was a demo model (in perfect condition) that I snagged for $99. So that still leaves me a lot to play with when I finally decide how to spend the rest. I'm really pleased with the performance of the 50/1.8. It was quite an… -
Re: Jennifer -- Session 2
Travis, The Whipping Post is where I usually hang out where feedback is direct and the standard is a professional portfolio shot. That also my reference point and below I’ll provide some thoughts. RE: the lack of feedback here, I occasionally post in the other forums and have been bemused by what gets people’s… -
Re: Opinion on mirrorless cameras
I like m4/3s cameras, but I have not disposed of my Canon system, and will not. I find uses for both systems, especially with over seas air travel concerns. I purchased a Panasonic GF-1 when it was introduced several years ago, as I was interested in its smaller form factor. Below ISO 500, It took fine pictures, but was… -
Re: 7D as a wedding camera?
If you are having AF issues with the sigma 17-50 f 2.8 (some folks do) then I suggest trading it for a Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. While the Canon does not close focus as well as the Sigma you have, in my experience it greatly beats the Sigma for AF keepers. That gets your standard zoom taken care of for professional… -
Re: Damned Annoying D7000 Focus. Ideas?
It's vital to properly conduct autofocus tests in order to draw conclusions from the tests. Using a computer monitor, and a tilted monitor at that, is a poor choice as a target. Computer moniotors have a "refresh" cycle which looks like "flicker" to an AF module and AF system, and it can cause all manner of results. When I…
