Re: Focus precision, 20D vs. XT. Technique etc.
Ziggy At the beginning, I took a lot of pictures with a 24-70L without flash, mainly in the family room with daylights from windows or in my daughter's bed room with 2 energy saving lights equivalent to 150W normal light bulb. Family room is about 22x20 square footage with big windows on three sides of walls and relatively… -
Re: 20D White Balance.
Custom White Balance is awesome Using AWB for normal shooting is fine. But when you're shooting in lighting conditions where there is a clear color cast -- such as under tungsten or florescent (or mixed!) lighting, and even outdoors toward either end of the day -- try Custom White Balance. It's a multi-step process, so it… -
Re: n00b needs some advice
Both the Canon 300D and the D30 are old cameras with fairly old technology. In the case of the D30 that was the very first of the Canon "prosumer" cameras and the responsiveness is slow and the resolution pretty low by any modern standard. Repairs on a D30 are likely to be a problem, they are that old. (That's why I… -
Re: need advice on purchase of first DSLR
Thanks for the kind words as always Art To answer your question based on my personal preferences and experience: I am an avid Olympus user. One of the reasons I was drawn to Olympus cameras is their great size, and their amazing features for prices far better than the competition. They are light, slightly smaller than… -
Re: Stormy Weather on the Hilltop (Hospital)
Thanks everyone! This was the 2nd time I took photos there, and the 4th time I've stopped by this place, and I was really feeling this place today. It's very photogenic and very easy to get some good shots out of this place. I'm hopefully getting back soon so I can experiment with some film a bit. Thanks. Found the link to… -
Re: Which printer for an amateur with a D700?
I love printing at home. It was a bit of a learning curve dealing with colors and profiles. And I ended up getting a color munki. The munki was a good thing to get anyway. Brings you back to reality for your exposures and how bright images should be to print well. I bought an Epson 2880 that prints up to 13x19. I love it.… -

Re: Why are smaller dimension images LARGER than Original
Hey Ya John, ...thanks for the input, it helps. And yeah, I am using a 60% compression/quality level right now out of LR3.x to get the size of the original down to something manageable for my purposes. I had sorta guessed it was what SM is doing while resizing for me and it's not an issue when I use less compression on the… -
Re: How to justify....
From someone who shoots equine, and made the move from a 70-300IS... its worth it! Actually... I bought the 70-200/4L and 70-200/2.8L. One for me and one for my fiancee . I decided to save a boat load of money and get the non-is versions simply because I'm always shooting at 1/1000th or faster. When it gets darker, horse… -
Re: Studio lighting - where to start
You can get by with out a light meter if you have done it several hundred times before but when you are just starting out? I don't recommend it. The light meter and bottom up lighting give me 100% reproducible ratios. Say I am doing Rembrant lighting with my medium softbox; I can test out lighting ratios from 1/3 stop up…
