Re: Finally jumping SLR to DSLR, Canon/Nikon or Olympus?
I currently have 2 E500 bodies that I use. The lenses I have are: 14-54mm 2.8-3.5, 40-150mm 3.5-4.5, 35mm 3.5 macro, and the Sigma 135-400mm 4.5-5.6 14-54mm 2.8-3.5 ($420): This lens is fast, extremely well built, and an excellent size. The new 12-60mm 2.8-3.5 ($1000) lens is virtually the same lens with a slightly… -
Re: Finally jumping SLR to DSLR, Canon/Nikon or Olympus?
Appreciate your comments about extensive product lines, 3rd party support, etc., that follow hand-in-hand with Canon's/Nikon's huge market shares. This has been my biggest wrestling match. Before the E3 and D300 showed itself, I was leaning toward FF with the Canon's 5D, about same dimension of 30D of that time (really… -
Finally jumping SLR to DSLR, Canon/Nikon or Olympus?
This is my first dgrin post, so please bear with me. I’m finally making the leap from decades of film SLR and advanced digital P&S to DSLR, and that’s a subject I expect most of you know something about. I’m a serious hobbyist, understand most of the physics, and have the dollars saved to do about what I want. Just left… -
Re: Finally jumping SLR to DSLR, Canon/Nikon or Olympus?
If you're concerned with size, weight- then the E3 gives you best combination of that and effective focal length. E3, 12-60, 50-200, 1.4TC and you're covered from 24-560mm, all weather sealed and with IS. Hard to beat that. Also I tried an E3 (I own a 40D) with the 12-60SWD lens and in S-AF, center point only it had the… -
Re: Finally jumping SLR to DSLR, Canon/Nikon or Olympus?
I'd recommend the 40D or D300. Canon and Nikon have the most extensive product lines and the greatest support among 3rd-party manufacturers, shops, and rental outlets. This is a natural result of the ~90% marketshare that these two companies hold. Don't overlook the value of renting, it can save you a ton of money, but… -
Re: Finally jumping SLR to DSLR, Canon/Nikon or Olympus?
Sounds like you've done a lot of thinking already, so I don't know how much I can add. I will say that you will likely be satisfied with either the E3, the 40D, or the D300. They are all excellent cameras. I personally use Olympus because of the many benefits you mentioned in your post. Much has been said regarding the 4/3… -
Re: Finally jumping SLR to DSLR, Canon/Nikon or Olympus?
Just an opinion about the High ISO complaints on the E3. As mentioned previously, I use the E500. It is a camera that many said the high ISO was its major flaw. However, if you visit my site: http://jswinton.smugmug.com and view the England gallery, nearly every photo was done at ISO 400+ with the E500 and many at ISO 800… -
Re: Finally jumping SLR to DSLR, Canon/Nikon or Olympus?
I'll also add that I don't think in-body image stabilization is as good as it sounds. You lose stabilization through the viewfinder this way, and handheld at longer focus lengths (like 400 mm), this can be the difference in even being able to compose a shot. As new lenses are released, in-lens image stabilization is moving… -
Re: Finally jumping SLR to DSLR, Canon/Nikon or Olympus?
The pentax isn't a 4/3rds sensor that I know of. I don't have one, I was just admiring one at Hunts a few days ago. It has a 1.5x crop factor so its sensor is about the same size as the 40d and d300 I think. Most sigma lenses seem to be available for it, though when a new lens is released it looks like they tend to do a… -
Re: Finally jumping SLR to DSLR, Canon/Nikon or Olympus?
The Olympus looks very nice. I've never used one though. The 40d and d300 are of course also both very nice. I think you should add the pentax k10d to the list of cameras to look at. The camera has in-body IS, is weathersealed and "built like a tank". I think you are quite right that you can't go wrong with any of those…
