Thanks much for update. I too have now deleted the SmugFoto app from my Facebook. Will also be very careful about which photos I choose to put on their site.

I assume putting links to my Smugmug site on Facebook doesn't fall under the same category and is "safe". Regards.
I don't think even Facebook could make the ridiculous claim that it owns content that you merely link to. (Then again, I wouldn't put it past a particularly stupid and aggressive lawyer to try...)

According to a Law.com post today, Facebook has announced a turn-about regarding it's policy change and is returning to it's earlier position.

I've always maintained that Facebook is evil and stupid. I've just permanently DELETED my Facebook account. This is NOT the first time that FB has tried to go well beyond what they should be doing. From beacon to these TOS's.. It doesn't matter that they changed their tune; it's that they've done it over and over and over and over again in the past. They're a slimy company from beginning to end. It's just that they were caught this time. How about next time?

P.S. Gaining context doesn't hurt either: There are over 6.76 billion people on this planet, just how important do you think your view of the world really is? Who really gets credit for that winning portraiture? The photographer or the subject, or the sun for it's light, or the clothes designer for that garment which 'brings out his eyes', or the manufacturer for the device you used to capture the image you're claiming ownership over? Everything is built on top of or off the back of something else...

Thats what Im saying. Have you ever heard of such a thing happening to anyone, ever? No. And it probably wont. If it did, people would drop FB so fast it would make their head spin & they'd be done.

Anyways, how could they EVER get to a photo you were merely linking to like in a SmugFoto app?? They're shown at such a small resolution & if you right-click protect them on the app & on your site, with big sizes turned off, there's just no way.

No, people wouldn't drop it. Facebook has done all manner of nonsense against their customers and it hasn't affected their numbers yet.

I take the proceed with "Extreme Caution" approach. While FB has been known to go through different iterations of their ToS and business model, they are no different than most companies looking to maximize their position in the market. I'm not overly concerned that one day they will show up at my door asking for royalties on photos from my SM galleries or them taking my photos and selling them. There isn't a lot of grey area when it comes to intellectual properties when it comes to photos. The hard reality is that FB is a very, VERY...did I mention it was VERY popular venue for a large number of potential customers. I use the analogy of an electrical outlet, if you aren't plugged in, you don't get any juice. I think the keys to being successful in the FB venue are know the beast known as FB and use their platform to your advantage. Be careful with any content "posted" to their photo galleries because there isn't any protection. People can just right click and save the photo, no muss, no fuss.

I for one prefer having the option to connect my SM to FB.

Good points. I have come to your conclusion too. At least we can somewhat control who has access to our Photos or Smugfoto thru "normal" channels by FB and SM Privacy settings.

Is the SmugMug Facebook app still supported?
I've been getting a message for several days that the smugapp beta is down for maintenance. Does anyone know if it's still supported by SmugMug?

I am using the Smugfoto app on FB and it is working okay this AM. Not familiar with "smugapp beta".

    Beta application

There's a message earlier in this thread (Dec 17) with a link a beta application that was being developed by SmugMug to integrate with Facebook. It had, I think, better integration of galleries than Smugfoto and the other apps I tried. It seemed to work really well until a week ago. Since then it just displays a message that it's down for maintnenance. If it's still in development I'll wait it out, but if it's been killed I'll move to one of the other apps. Facebook just updated their interface, so I think a lot of apps have to be updated.

    Status of SmugMug Facebook app
    Hi Scotticus

What's the status of your Facebook app ? When do you expect the pro version to be beta released ?

    Thx,

I just watched Ziv ("gillat" on here)of Eye-Fi push a huge number of his photos from Phanfare to Facebook in the space of minutes using phanfare's FB app (http://help.phanfare.com/index.php/Facebook_Application). This is what I want, and more... It's disappointing that SmugMug doesn't seem to be working on this any more.

Really? That's funny because we have a fulltime sorcerer dedicated to social apps with SmugMug, and one of those Apps is SmugMug for Facebook, which we're currently testing right now. :D

The key word here is "seem", Andy. The post above mine is three weeks old asking about the official app, and not a peep from Scotticus. Unless I'm missing some other "SmugMug's official FB app updates" thread, everybody knows this thread is here, including your full time social app sorcerer.

To add to this, you had a beta app that reared its head months ago and then just slithered away into the ether with very little information given.

So I stand by my statement. Until you said something just now it seemed that you were no longer working on it. Had there been no activity or interest from your side in the past it might be reasonable to never say anything to customers about it, but that's not the case.

We don't talk about everything :D I'm sorry you feel like we dropped the ball. The fact is, there's lots of social stuff getting close to becoming live. Hang in there :D

    SmugMug Slide Show in FB
I would also like to put a gallery slide show in FB. I don't necessarily need to import the photos there, but just provide a YouTube-Like window that lets the person go forward and backwards throught the photos.

Adding pics to FB just causees me to try to keep track of more photos added to my many, many photos.

Cute tricks like adding the photo file name and maybe my SmugMug description and click on pic to go to picture on SM would be nice but keep it simple.....

    Thanks

Did I miss the announcement? That was April and it's now Jul.

Very much interested in a FB app. FB has become the #1 way people view my photos. I pretty much upload to smugmug, then to fb now. The tagging and connection to news (when I post photos to fb) is what brings people to see the photos.

Sorry if the app has been released and I just missed it,

Check out the Smugmug 'help' on Sharing. Facebook is addressed there. The Facebook app SmugFoto also has some value.

FWIW - I've been happier with the way SimpleMug integrates than with what I've seen of the official integration so far.
