This one is printed in 24x36 Kodak Metallic here, and hanging in my studio. It's freaking GORGEOUS.

Nice work, everyone. What I see in many of these is huge depth-of-field. Because P&S cameras are miniaturized compared to DSLR's, that gives them a huge advantage in terms of depth-of-field. As an exemple, with my powershot 3IS at maximum zoom, and a focal length of 50 mm (or possibly 75) I can stand in a spot and compose roughly the same image as I get with my XTi at 200 mm.

I believe that is the reason we see so many great landscape shots in this post. The disadvantage of a P&S is it's slow speed. That's why we don't see many action shots here.

Ethan, one does not use a sledge hammer to drive tacks. Nor does one dig a hole with a hammer.

P&Ss do have great depth of field, that makes them good for macros and landscapes, of course.

For a shallower DOF, a full frame DSLR will offer more control of DOF. Use a tool for what it excels atthumb.gif

    Nice thread !
    Hi,

thanks for this toppic. I restricted myself from buying DSLR untill I'll shoot 1000 nice (to me) photographs with my trustworthy S2 IS. Just to learn a bit first. Currently I have 100 of them + 100 waiting for processing. So it's another ~6 years before I can buy another camera :)

P&Ss also suck at shooting things that fly, swim, and prowl in the dark.
