whew, whatta trip i'm happy to say that all went well, and we all had a blast. couldn't ask for a more beautiful location! lots of good stories to tell, loads of piccies to process and post :uhoh i'll be busy for a week i think :lol3 it was so very cool to meet everyone, and to shoot in the footsteps of some of the greatest landscapers of all time. here are just three images i worked up a bit on my laptop at yosemite.
this is canon 20d with 35L on board, 10-stop nd filter and a c-pl filter stacked. 2seconds at f/16, iso 100. tripod nearly in the river
infrared-modified canon digital rebel, with canon 10-22 ef-s aboard.
this is canon 1Ds with zeiss distatgon 21mm f/2.8 aboard. this is the famous "tunnel view." tripod mounted, f/8 @ 1/250th sec, iso 100.
it was a great trip. i cannot wait to see everyone's shots!
next year: zion national park :deal

Love the first one. Like them all, love the first.
I'm jealous--my images keep saying that they're processing. 30 minutes later. arrggghh.

Thanks, for organizing the trip! Figured I should get on the forum after showing up to the trip after Don told me about it.
I like the shots... I'm a bit distracted by the degree of polarization on bridal veil falls on the third shot, though... it's black (which is how it looks when you've dialed in maximum polarization, but it really draws my eye over).
I uploaded about 12 shots that I basically converted straight through to JPEG... Smugmug must be getting buried or be a little slow this evening, it's been processing for 45 minutes
thanks cat that third shot has no polarizer aboard, i don't have one that fits my distagon heheheh it's straight from the camera that one...
cheers

That place must be oh so photogenic. I really do have to make it out that way someday. I made it as far as Yellowstone and Salt Lake City, but not down to Yosemite or Zion. Someday, oh yes, someday..
thanks so much, ben

Super shots, as usual That Distagon is a keeper, IMHO
I was so wiped out last night I barely got any pics edited I figured I'd give the others a chance to post first. Hope the flight was good and that you're feeling better.
Thanks again for being the point man for this event. You did a bangup job
Steve
Great shots! Being as close to you guys as I was this weekend and not being able to get out there was just killing me!
You guys here (all of you grinners) have totally reignited my love for photography, and I would love to have been there to meet some of you in person.
So...where's the next trip?!?

You did a fantastic job of conceiving and executing this event. Thank you for making my first visit to Yosemite such a memorable one. And I can't even believe you're talking about Zion for next year - the Colorado Plateau is tops on my list of uniquely American places to visit.
Thanks again, Andy.

I think this demonstrates how it takes more than just being at the right place. You need to know what your doing to get that extra wow factor.
Sam
sam wtg - thanks for posting that! hey don't you have another pic from the same spot you want to share?

Flowing water is one of those things I really like. You need about 1/2 second exposure to get a good blend, and 2-3 seconds make it look "foggy."
I saw an amazing photo from Craig Tanner once that looked like a bunch of rocks in the ocean enshrouded in fog. As it turns out, there was no fog at all -- it was just moving water, and a 30 second exposure. Distorting time can really change the look of things, and after some more time photographing, I've come to really prefer images that look different than they would if you "just took them."
Anyway, with water, it's almost impossible to blur water in bright daylight, without using a filter of some sort. Because even if you stop down to f/22 and use a polarizer, you'll get a 1/15 or 1/30 second exposure at ISO 100. So you break out the the filter (I have a 3 stop ND grad; I got a 1/6 to 1/2 second exposure, couldn't get longer) and blur time... it's quite easy to do and very much worth trying.
It should go without saying, of course, that a tripod is mandatory for this. I saw a lot of people trying to take pictures over the weekend without a tripod... it's 100% certain your landscape images will suffer greatly without one, because you lose so much flexibility in what you can do. When I started shooting from a tripod, the percentage of my shots that I really liked went from maybe 1 in 200 to 1 in 50, which ain't bad
Great pics! It was great meeting you in person. You continuously make me want to become better at this photog thing....
