The Coyote

Fellow Dgrinner Aaron (anwmn1) and I were tooling through Death Valley when we spotted a coyote crossing the road about 100 yards ahead. I gingerly pulled over and prayed he'd hang around long enough to get a shot. Much to our surprise, instead of running away, he sauntered over to say hello.

That last one is magical! The others are very good as well.

Worrisome, though, that he had no fear - either too inexperienced or too used to people.

Great shots, Joel. Luck indeed, but to paraphrase, chance favors the prepared photographer.

Why thank you, Ben. Yeah, she was a mess, so we brushed her out for the shoot.

Thanks, ilbcnu! I wish this thing would happen more often, but sadly that's not the case. I've had only one similar instance which was with a couple of foxes back a couple of years ago. Links:

Thanks, Ann! That last one was my wife's favorite as well.

Yes, the incident was both euphoric, and disturbing at the same time. I'm very worried about that coyote's future.

You really lucked out on these. I love that last shot with him/her looking right at the camera.

When ever I see one around home its gone as soon as it sees you.

Thanks, Jeff, Thwack, Jack and Schnauzer. It was a very lucky opportunity. But it was also disturbing in that the little critter seemingly had no fear of us at all.

Thanks again for your comments, and glad you liked the shots. thumb.gif

Great series! The expression in the last image is priceless. I just love the variances in their coats. The coyotes we have in our area are brazen enough to come into our horse corrals to drink out of the water troughs. While I love to hear them every night that is a little too close. Beautiful animal though.
