I would say that is where the program parameters were arrived at, that is how the camera manufacturer derived what those settings would be, and are 'in the ballpark' more or less for most folks' needs. The art comes in knowing when to deviate from them and you are, as others have said, well on your way to developing that art. A simple exercise that helped me: Set yourself a photo project, something you are familiar with, set the camera on the program setting for that task, and take the photo, adjust each setting both up and down at least 2 full stops, aperture +/-, shutter +/- and ISO +/-, while noting the effect. Decide what you liked/disliked about each outcome for the 7 pictures do this for a different type of photo that you are also experienced with. Then, finally, do this for any new type of image you attempt to take. The learnin' never ends, though...
