For those that care (like me ), Canon has released a new firmware patch for the 50D.
Can be found here
Guess what I'm going to be doing tonight?
From their web-site, addresses the following:
This firmware update (Version 1.0.6) incorporates the following fixes.
1. Supports the AF assist beam feature of the new flash, Speedlite 270EX, which is scheduled to be released in April 2009.
2. Changes the error indications that are displayed on the camera.
3. Addresses the vertical banding noise phenomenon.
Firmware Version 1.0.6 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.0.5. If the camera's firmware is already version 1.0.6, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
In addition, Firmware Version 1.0.5 has already been incorporated with improvements to support the AF assist beam feature of Speedlite 270EX and change the error indications that are displayed on the camera.
Notes:
When updating to Firmware Version 1.0.6, please also update the Digital Photo Professional, Picture Style Editor, ZoomBrowser EX, and ImageBrowser software to the following versions or later.
*Digital Photo Professional: Version 3.5.2 (Windows/Macintosh)
*Picture Style Editor: Version 1.4.2 (Windows/Macintosh)
*ZoomBrowser EX: Version 6.2.1c (Windows)
*ImageBrowser: Version 6.2.1c (Macintosh)
For those that may be wondering what happened to 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 - it appears that 1.0.5 was included in more recently new 50D cameras but Canon chose not to post it on their site for download. Don't know about 50D 1.0.4 yet.

I read over at dpreview that this update may affect microAF settings. Have you noticed that at all?
Thanks

But .... I guess I'll have to do some more testing. I have a shoot on Saturday. That testing will be done tomorrow. I'll post the results here afterwards.
Do you, by any chance, have a link to that dpreview thread?

Only saw one mention of it messing up the microAF settings. Not sure what to make of it. Didn't mean to stress you out before the shoot on Saturday. Guess you're going to revisit that tree, huh?

1. My clock seemed to have reverted to pre-DST time. I know that I had fixed it previously but, at the end of the day, realized I was slow by 1 hour
2. The camera seems to be underexposing by 1/3 of a stop now.
3. My microAF seems a bit off. Used my old 70-210 yesterday which had been a favorite after microAF adjusting. Seems just a hair off now.
On the plus side, shot at iso 200-3200 in decent light (shade/overcast 7pm) and was very impressed by what I think is improved noise at the higher isos. Then again, I may be imagining that...
Anyone experience similar results?
Thanks
E

If you hung out around here a bit more, you would have known about it a week ago (link). Of course, I just couldn't resist messing with you a bit.
