FWIW, yesterday during the time that many were having problems with slow speed (viewing galleries, not just uploading), when I tested my connectivity using http://speedtest.net to the smugmug hosted destination, I would frequently get total failures. It would not even get past the ping latency test to then continue to the down/up speed tests. When it did work I was seeing only sporatic bursts with speeds of a few hundreds of Kbps. During that same time my connectivity to all other west coast speedtest.net destinations was normal. I tested this speed from a residential AT&T DSL line and also from a commercial, broadband testing lab based DS3 with the same results (both originated in Alabama) ..
When the browsing and uploading at smugmug cleared up last night, the connectivity to the smugmug hosted speedtest.net destination also returned to normal from these locations.
I thought it might be helpful to you to correlate the smugmug services problems yesterday with the smugmug hosted speedtest.net services.
(Sorry, touched a nerve there - it seems even Smugmug themselves often forget about the rest of the world)
No, that's not possible, as we have clients from all over the world, and we have people emailing us for help from all continents, the seven seas, and everywhere.
I am also getting tired of slowness and now it looks like smugmug is down again for 2nd time today. It is getting old and I have actual customers viewing my website. I am actually thinking about switching esp since there is no packages. Photoshelter? others? Pros cons anyone?
Wow, a website goes down or in read only mode for a couple hours and it's time to abandon ship? I've only been with smugmug for about 2.5 years, but the problems have been so small that they're basically non-existent. Yeah, it's inconvenient that there's a delay being caused. I have 27 galleries to upload to another pro's account for some fundraiser work we did, but c'est la vie...these things happen. The level of service from smugmug is unparalleled.
Hey, the site is really fast now. Thanks for working late to get it back to speed.
The problem I had earlier with my captions, I just clicked on save when the site was back up again and it saved everything. Thank goodness! I sure didn't want to type all those captions again.
Thanks for working until it's fixed! I know a lot of companies would have put it off until the next business day. Definitely saved me from a loss of sales today.
So what happened to the photos of mine that I uploaded last night?
It was only two photos but I uploaded them into 4 galleries - so basically 4 photos gone.
Most uploaders (maybe even all) were not working for a couple hours last night. Depending upon the uploader, it might have either shown you an error or made you think they uploaded successfully when they didn't. See here for some of the discussion about it.

Check your upload log - http://www.smugmug.com/homepage/uploadlog.mg (if you're already logged in, otherwise log in first and click the link or access the log via your control panel). You can see if there were any errors and which files didn't upload.

During the upload outage last night, nothing was going to the upload log. One can look, but it wasn't a help last night.
Everytime I look at that site I get really angry, because it is *SO FREAKING HARD TO JUST VIEW PHOTOS* on it. Their awful layout drives me mad, and it's a damn shame because there are so many great photos there, including the awesome and new White House photostream.
But technically? What do they have that SmugMug doesn't? Mapping? I guess it's a touch friendlier. Better tagging? Yes, oh god yes. (Yes yes, apparently Dev is working on this. Hooray. :-)
But API-wise, I don't think they've got much on you.
The biggest thing they've got is community and eyeballs. Their userbase is huge, and likes to comment. So I guess that's good for ad revenue, but yeah, I don't really think people looking at photos really want to click on ads. Especially if they're looking at personal photos.
Well, back in the day when the founders were still there they really did some nice things. I'd love to have forums integrated like they do with groups, the interestingness search and a few other things like favorites. But their center of gravity was getting traffic, which they did well, and we kept looking at financial data to help guide our decisions. Sometimes that meant doing less traffic-generating stuff, but it secured our future.
SM Superheros: there is still very long timers waiting for photos to process. I've read back a bit more and still don't have a definitive ETA on when all of the is going away and the length of time this is continuing is really becoming an issue. I know you are working on resolving the issues but when will it go away for good?

The queue's caught up so if you have photos you thought were uploaded, it could have been when we were gakking late last night. Check your log
Thanks for the reply Andy. I uploaded about an hour ago a single 4.5MB file so it isn't related to last nights backlog. The upload went as fast as I would have expected but the "Picture Processing" stayed for just about the entire time as I got fed up and went to do an errand. It was available when I got back. Any thouhgts?

Sorry Randy, according to your upload log that image took about 20 minutes to process. Looking at the photos uploaded just before/after it by other users, they processing in < 20 seconds. I'd guess your image hit some sort of a failure in the rendering the first time through and had to be redone. Just bad luck that your first test after yesterday's outage happened to hit a rendering glitch and require a second attempt. <img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/ne_nau.gif" border="0" alt="" >

anyone still having issues with site speed? I've tried various galleries and browsing still seems incredibly slow... i know the all clear was given, hopefully I'm not the only one with speed issues?
smugmug.com, Andy's Moonriver site, popular photos, photo community, etc. are all slow...

I haven't interactively checked, but my monitoring software shows me the average load times for my site have suddenly tripled in the last 90 minutes.

a lil bit. i just uploaded a dozen or so shots a few mins ago and it really hangs up on "checking photo" when using the simple uploader....and i only used the simple uploader because send2smugmug kept failing on me.
The Woman told me that a few weeks ago, she was trying to show a potential client some photos on the site but it was loading so slowly that they had to give up.
speeds are slow, for sure, but not crawling like they were 1, 2 and 3 days ago.
I just had the scare of my life. It said that I had no photos in my gallery!
It loaded now, but that really had me panicking, and pressing refresh only to get the same result for 3 minutes!
Was slow earlier - there was a "burp" in the system and a red box message was showing about problems - is fast now.
However, several images I uploaded today have vanished from their gallery though it appears they are still somewhere as external links in a forum are still working.

Been slow on and off for about a week, just browsing the 'todays favorites' it stops then starts loading the thumbnails, hover over a photo to rank it, box appears but no red or green thumbs, then both red go to another page etc etc. . . . starting to get a little annoying now.
