I've been with SM since 2005. I've had more outages with my hosting company who I pay 12x more than my SM account. And the level of service that SM provides is top notch. I'm actually having all my staff photographers sign up to SM. (I was trying to sign up one of them right now.)

Really? Then you need to get a new host because that's ridiculous.

In May 2009 alone Smugmug experienced brief (or not so brief) outages:
    5/4
    5/6
    5/7
    5/14
    5/18
    5/21
    5/22
    5/31

In our 7+ years of history I don't think we've ever given anyone any reason to believe we'd lose your images. We take great care to protect them. Sorry for the hassle last night, we don't like it anymore than you do.

I agree -- the amount of downtime seems a bit much, and communication is lacking. The SM status page's last post at 8:34pm says that everything is back up, yet it's been down since around 9:30pm. If you're going to have a status it needs to be kept up-to-date.
We're trying really hard to do just that. I'm sorry we didn't get an update in for the later outage last night. I'll discuss it with our Operations.

Hi Folks, I'm very sorry - I signed off for the night about 1230am and it look like there was another problem after that. Our Ops team was on it, of course, but we didn't communicate in our Status blog about it - I'm very sorry about that, we're trying very hard to post there and keep you up to date.

Sorry for the hassle last night.

What keeps causing these late night outages, it seems to be non stop any more? Allot of my work happens overnight and not being able to get things posted is costing me money. Begining to get disapointed in these "down times". The comment "we dont like it any more then you" is not a proper means of handling an issue either imo.

Hi Ken, I'm sorry it resonated wrong with you :( it's the truth, exactly how I feel. I'm very sorry. We'll try and get an update from our Ops.

When I think of outage, I think of one that lasts long enough that it impacts business. Usually anything over 30 minutes will do this. SM has been really good compared to my host in terms of this. Even with major outages, SM is back up quicker. And this is no bargin-buck host either. They are highly recommended for vbulletin hosting and have tons of reviews.

I have to agree, we (your customers) dont care if you're upset at the outage, we just want good clear communication and a fast resolution. I have been in IT for over 25 years and none of my customers have ever cared how I feel about an outage that shuts them down, they do however care that I know how "they" feel.

Andy, I think you meant well but maybe your efforts would be better directed to getting us updates when outages occur.

I've been taken to task on this by Darryl, have reworked the status blog, and have been diligently posting to it http://smugmug.wordpress.com

I'm sorry our Operations didn't post to it in the wee hours last night.

    Hey Andy,

No response needed, but do want to chime in that the pretty frequent downtime is getting troublesome. I've only been a pro member for a month and the stats aren't looking so great.

I do realize your op center is having a lot of varied technical problems so it's not the same problem happening over and over again.

I just want to be another customer voice in the mix hoping that Smugmug is looking for a way to deal with the downtime frequency. From my perspective as a pro customer for a month, it seems out of the ordinary for a web enterprise company.

I did read a post sometime back from perhaps you are another sorcerer that was stating pretty clearly smugmug has had a good reputation over the years for uptime.

So, what's changed? Outgrowing the hardware? Outgrowing the bandwidth? Time for more redundancy perhaps? Just thinking outloud...
