Moonrise Over Cathedral Rock-Sedona, AZ

Traveled to Sedona last week to shoot the full moon over Cathedral Rock. First two nights were clouded over and were a no-go, but on the third night Mother Nature finally cooperated. Here's one of many shots taken as the moon traversed the buttes. Taken with a 5D Mark II, 100-400L + Kenko 1.4 Teleplus Pro 300 converter (560mm focal length):

Thanks Mahesh...I'm a fan of your work on FM.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. There are plenty of shooting opportunities in Sedona, all within 10 miles or less, if you know where to look. Spent a lot of time in and on water at Slide Rock and the Narrows, up top at Schnebley, and out at Jerome, but definitely my favorite was getting the full moon at Cathedral Rock...made the entire trip worthwhile. I wish they all were that productive... :D

    Amazing!
What an amazing shot! I've been there for moonrise and have never been able to capture what I see with my eyes. Wonderful!

Please take a look at this thread on the IYA2009 Earth & Sky photo contest...this SO qualifies :)

Absolutely beautiful, argyle! I know the area you shot this from. Makes me want to go back to visit with two of my sisters again.

Not at all. Believe it or not, the shot was taken from alongside the road, about 1/2-mile in from the main highway. The little rise along the fence line was perfect, but it all depends on the azimuth angle. If you're interested, try this link to get all the technical info regarding moon/sun rise/set and angles. Then just get yourself a cheap compass and find the location that matches the azimuth angle.

Great shot. Makes me wish I had a big lens, but I won't need it if you bring me shots like this.

Along size the road -- wow, wouldn't have guessed that. I looked up the moonrise/sunset times already. However, taking into account the azimuth angle for picking the proper location is a bit of genius that wouldn't have occurred to me. In fact, I'm still not sure how to put that knowledge to practical use, but I have a couple of weeks to figure it out. deal.gif

BTW, so many photographers are very protective of things like locations, techniques and the like. I think that's pretty darn sporting of you to share your knowledge like this and I really appreciate it. thumb.gifthumb
