What's really strange is that I tried to embed these using the share button and the original, unrotated image was displayed. It's like the rotation started and then terminated early or that it just reported the rotated dimensions to the db. ne_nau.gif

Samir, for me both of those links take me to a completely black image. There's a small icon in the upper left corner with the image number, and the borders show that it's a vertical shot, and I can click on "Info" and see that they are both supposedly 1920 X 2560. I can also see the thumbs for both, and even in the thumbs I can see that they're weirdly stretched or something. But the large preview is totally black.

It's odd you posted tonight. I was just thinking about all this & was gonna post here & ask if you'd done enough uploading now to check it all out. I was hoping for good news, as I have had no issues anymore at all, related to the original problem of over-rotation (that I know of). I haven't uploaded in the past week though. In my dreams, I still see the selection process as "fixed" (with photos not de-selecting as they go beyond what is visible on the screen). And I see a tool in which you can do every rotation direction in one screen, not needing to go back into that tool several times per gallery. I pray that this tool gets a huge re-vamp that includes those changes, but I fear it could be years. Well, I hope you figure out this latest. Very odd. If I were you, I would try uploading those 2 shots again into that same gallery (but don't get rid of the first two) and see what happens... I mean see if it's just some fluke.

One test that I have not done & have wanted to do is this: go into the tool, do all the rotations that need to be rotated L. (Marking down each file # !) Then go back in immediately & rotate each one that needs rotating R (marking down each file # !) etc... to see if going back in immediately is ever a problem. The reason this needs to be done is that I have always been waiting for a very conservative amount of time (often 15 min. or more) to go back in, fearing I'd cause problems. But people should not need to do this, and most people would certainly not know of any need to do so. I will not have time to test that for some weeks.

Yeah, the thumbnail view is exactly what the larger view is too on my side. :cry I don't have time to let these sit, so in another hour or so I'm going to find my own solution and SM is going to have to hear from me again.

I've been swamped on trying to work on the technical side of my site versus the content. An EXPENSIVE project didn't complete on time in the beginning of March and that pushed everything behind. Combine that with a month-long project for a Fast Five premiere event in April that got botched because of a tornado outbreak, and here we are today.

So I'm working on processing literally 20,000+ photos as fast as I can while creating another 1000-2000 every weekend. And I need to process these galleries and get them live asap. This problem couldn't have popped up at a worse time...

As far as your test, I would run it immediately and see what type of results you get. If someone at SM needs to dive back into the code, they might as well fix everything they can find.

I just have no time for testing right now... daughter's getting married this week & large reception in a month. Wish I did. Samir, I just learned in another thread that we have a great new improvement to the thumbnail-cropping tool. No more waiting for thumbs to crop. It's possible (in my non-programmer's mind) that this may have introduced the thumbs problem you saw in the other thread, or even this one here. I've certainly had random images though, like one or two in thousands, that have ended up weird like these two did, so it makese sense to just re-upload those 2 & see if the new ones are OK. Are you saying you see an all-black image in the large photo like I'm seeing?

I completely understand. Weddings can be really crazy. I think you are dead-on with your assessment that these two issues are related. This is all too common at SM where one new feature breaks an old one.

I would re-upload, but there's no guarantee that the new ones won't also have an issue when rotated. ne_nau.gif I actually see the distorted image instead of an all-black one. Try clicking on it and see what you get. I got the distorted one in Medium and Large.

When I click on the large preview, I just get loading....loading... & it doesn't load & stays black. When I click on the thumbs that have those file #s, I just get the black preview. Sometimes the borders don't even show up. Well, sure, you're right there's no "guarantee", but why not just try it? At least then you'd know if there's something about those 2 particular images that made Smug's rotate tool treat them differently, or if it was a random thing that could happen to any image. I'd keep those 2 there though so someone can take a look. (if you have to make this gallery public immediately, you could hide those 2 images & move 'em to the last page of your gallery. Smug gurus could still see them.) ETA: there are some other weird ones in that gallery too-- page 8 & some others. Two of the Beetles on p. 8 look like those kid-toy "fat cars" ! OH man, I can't look at that gallery anymore... I'm just drooling too much over the cars! The splitty (bus), some of those bugs... that's totally what I grew up in... I mean the whole gallery. Had a '71 camper ourselves, for several yrs. We would sit in it every Thanksgiving & listen to "Alice's Restaurant"! I want one again so-oo-o bad. Ok, sorry. I digress.

You're right, there's a lot of weirdness in that gallery. :cry Dammit. :cry I needed this published TODAY. I was so frustrated that I went to sleep hoping it would just fix itself by the morning. Now, my whole day just started off on a really bad foot. I'm going to do whatever I need to to fix them and get everything published. I can't wait on SM to figure it out. I'll create another gallery if they want more samples of errors, it seems like it's easy enough to reproduce.

One thing that seemed weird was that the first link seemed to reset back to its pre-rotated state. I just wish all of them would do that. Then I can just publish the gallery and worry about rotating them later after this problem is fixed.

I think that's going to be my game plan--just leave the images alone until the problem is fixed and process the gallery like normal, just twisting my head a lot in the meantime.

Thank you for the update. Hope it doesn't take as long to fix as the video issue. I've got enough backlogged work as it is.

Samir, we can repair any non-properly rotated images for you - just email the heroes with a list and we'll get 'em sorted out.
The bug that caused this in the first place is now fixed.

It's all good, I've already started to delete them and re-upload them. So the rotate tool should be fixed? headscratch.gif

Thank you guys for the quick work, even though I didn't have a problem this time. So, uhhh, Samir, are we ever gonna let Greg have his beer?? mwink.gif I guess Andy's allowed one too, right? :giggle I don't drink beer, but cheers from me anyway! You can have a second one once the entire tool is revamped so that all rotation directions can be done in one fell swoop. wings.gif Well, shucks. I tried to put the cheers emoticon in there, but you can't do that when editing. Boohoo.

After one more weekend of testing, I can be sure. I ran into some stuff that looked funky, but I think it was my user error. I didn't have time to test since I was already behind a day.

Let's see what this weekend reveals. After working with another 2000-3000 images, I think I'll be pretty sure it's fixed. clap.gif

He says he "...thinks he'll be pretty sure...", Greg, so sounds like we still have time to dig up the most amazing variety possible?! If you're starting to feel we oughta both send a case of our local best-est, I don't blame you! Around here, our locally made stuff is Yuengling. Don't know the microbreweries, but I'm sure there are some. I have an actual, bonafide alcohol allergy, so I'm not real helpful in this area! (Much worse with wine though)

Well, I wanted to post here after I processed my 20,000+ photo backlog and say all was well, but I've found concrete evidence of over-rotation again. :cry But it's really, really rare now. I've run into 3 in the last 10,000 photos, but it is still happening.

Anna, you'll have to start watching for this too as I'm sure you'll run across it. Then we'll have to try to figure out when this is happening as it's going to be even more tough for Greg to find it as it's ultra rare. ne_nau.gif

I guess I'd say that if only 3 in 10,000 have a problem, I'd be much more thrilled if they spend time fixing the problem with the rotate tool that I reported back in Post #239 first. I'll just paste it here for ease, since there are so many more pages with this new DGrin style. The thing is, a lot more people have problems with the rotate tool due to what I'm stating here (and yes, they do, because I've talked to a bunch of them!) than with the over-rotation tool, or they think that the tool isn't working correctly because of the glitchy selection process. Samir, I don't want to minimize the 3 in 10,000 thing, but I haven't heard a response back about the issue below, and it affects a huge percentage of images that are being selected for rotation. It just stumped someone the other day who I had logged in as Assistant. So, once again:
I do have one concern/suggestion/observation that might get this even more fully resolved going forward, however... or should I say: it will help with people's confidence & assurance that it's resolved. It's another issue with how the rotate tool works, and it's one that I should have mentioned much earlier, since some people (maybe even Samir, but if so, he probably compensated for it a long time ago) may have been having this trouble in combo with the other problem.

So here you go: When selecting photos for rotation using the bulk tool, you can choose photos for rotation just by clicking on them one at a time & not holding down any other buttons. You know you've selected them because they get a red edge, of course. So you're trucking along, thinking you've selected a bunch. You scroll down, selecting some more, and then go up to the top & hit "left" or whatever & figure you're done. Well, if you haven't been counting or forget to notice how many are slated for rotation, you may not realize that a whole bunch of previously selected photos are now missing from the count. Why? Because you really do need to hold down the "control" key, but only if you have more than one screen-ful of thumbnails! As soon as you scroll, that's it, your selections that aren't showing on the screen have un-selected themselves. I've never seen other selection tools (on my computer or elsewhere) behave this way. This one fools you because it allows multi-selecting w/o the control key... unless scrolling needs to occur (I've not tried this on a MAC, so I can't tell you what MACs do w/ it). I've been compensating for this for so long now that I forgot about the issue until the other day when it happened again & I thankfully noticed & had to re-select.

The problem this can cause is people thinking they told a bunch of photos to rotate when they really didn't. If you haven't scrolled down very far, only some of the photos you previously selected may un-select, so you just don't realize it. I would say that the solution here is to make it so that the only way to select more than one photo is to hold down control or shift, because that's the way people expect the tool to work. (as much as I hate having to use control, it's more fail-safe). As long as control is held down, there's no problem. The only problem is not realizing that control needs to be held down but only if some previously-selected thumbs no longer show on your screen because you've scrolled. So making control a must-do will prevent people from thinking they rotated photos that they really haven't. I'm afraid otherwise you'll have this tool all nicely fixed & then still get people saying it's not. There may be other bulk tools here that have this issue, but I can't remember off-hand. I used to get thrown off by it all the time, but it's the kind of thing you just do w/o thinking about it after a few months here... unless you don't rotate for awhile. Then you come back & say, "oooops...oh yeah..."

I've actually found a workaround for that problem as well as some others related to the photo selection UI. If there's a pause while the system is processing the javascript, you can lose all your selections, if you select using the mass tools where you can highlight images, you can lose selections. I just don't risk it anymore and just use the tool multiple times.

Three in 10,000 isn't much, but that's like the 1% downtime that SM has--it will hit you when you don't need it. If you could be on the lookout for any rotation issues, that would be great. Figuring out any way to narrow down the trigger will make debugging this easier.

I don't have any of that anymore, but I will have the exact image id time/date and an untouched link that you can work with the next time I see the issue. thumb.gif Thank you so much for looking into this again. For all intensive purposes of your bet, you won, so go collect that beer. clap.gif

If there is still a problem, it is very rare, but that doesn't mean it can't be fixed.

Let me know when you see this again and I'll poke at the log files and see what if anything is there.
