Smugmug Uploaded is killing my internet!

Ok, i am completely at a loss and on the verge of a mental breakdown!!

i did an event yesterday and when i was done editing the images, it was time to upload them to Smugmug. at first, everything was fine but then when it was done, i saw no images in my gallery and my latency jumped to 1350 and my DL speed was at 0.12 instead of 15-20MB. i reset the router and everything was back to normal but when i tried to uplaod again, the same exact thing happened.

finally, i decided to use send to smugmug instead and it kept erroring out after 30 or so images which again means that i do not have all the images up. i did this about 10 times now and every single time the uploaded kiills my internet and no images are sent to smugmug.

this is a major problem for me right now since i have another event later on today and if i can't use smugmug, i will have to find another alternative.

Hi, this really sounds like a connection issue. We have some tests that you can run that will allow us to see where the problem may be. Please give us a shout on the help desk letting us know if you use a PC or Mac and what your site URL is. We can give you the instructions that you can run.

email sent to Helpdesk Doc but just incase, here is some more information that might help:

I am using a PC and my OS is Windows 7. I am trying to upload Jpeg's and like i said, i tried both the Java uploader and the Send to Smugmug. In addition, i already ran all the tests on your support page and all of them came back perfect so it is not a connection issue i am araid.

It's doing the same thing to me, I thought it was the usual Sunday SmugMug meltdown, but it still is not working. I think it is probably time for me to try someone else...........

Guys, I am pretty sure that this is something on your end. We just need to figure out what it is. We have thousands of other users that are uploading using the same type of uploader that you are without any problems.

I need to trade emails with you on a couple test results so this is best handled via the help desk. So please send me any information you can about your account, any errors messages you see etc. Either I or one of the other geeks will take a look and have you run the tests etc. and see what might be causing it.

Details about your operating system, the browser and version number used, and any security applications would help.

Something else to try is a different browser. If you use IE, try Firefox, Safari, and or Google Chrome. See if they behave the same way. That might help narrow things down a bit.

Also, one last thing to try is uninstalling and reinstalling Java. I have seen that help for some users.

I even tried Star Explorer, it uploads two files and sits there like this ne_nau.gif

Is there a max file size for jpg's? I have not changed anything on my end, been a Smugger for 3 years, so I am used to dealing with the Sunday Meltdowns. I ran several server tests, all at 1 meg per second. I know how computers are, anything is possible, but I would bet money it is not on my end. I went to Flickr and it works fine there. If you think we are the only two having problems, better check the message boards closer.iloveyou.gif

Yes, 12Mb for Standard and Power customers, 24Mb for pros. 48 Megapixels file dimensions for all accounts.

Not in a loooooong time. We've sunk a fortune into our uploading.

Please write our Support Heroes so we can do some diagnostics and deal with you one-on-one, thanks!

Is this a joke? I have several friends who signed up after me, and that is what we talk about on Monday morning, how many times it took us to upload on Sunday. We do 300-1000 pictures each, and mine are all less than 12 megs, and I do have the Pro subscription. We will see what happens, and if it is me I will come right here and apologize in CAPITAL LETTERS and scream it out loud

It's no joke. Years ago, it was bad on Sunday nights. But we've vastly improved our uploading and ability to receive bazillions of files in short order. We've not had Sunday night problems to speak of, for a long long time. If you're having troubles, write us, we'll help find the issue.

    What ISP are you using?

Back when I was on Comcast, I discovered that their "speed booster" technology actually works by limiting your download speed once you have uploaded more that 5MB!

I have since figured out it will work if I keep my image sizes about 2 megs. Doesn't make any sense, I can upload 600 pictures at 2 megs each, but only 2 at 8 megs each.

I've been here for... I don't know... 2...3 yrs... I've never seen any particular Sunday problem. In fact, I've not had slow uploads here in... forever. It's been great. I also often upload hundreds at a time, on Sundays, and they're usually a whole pile of large files (maybe 5 to 15 MB). But then, I do have FIOS, and the fast computer helps. Yes, back in the day I used to have to shut down for awhile after uploads. But that was me & what I was trying to do w/ slow connection & slow computer!

I spoke too soon, 25 errors out of 300 pictures, not a very good percentage, even with small files.

    My ISP is roadrunner.

My computer is a I7 processor (basically 8 core), and 9 gigs ram, if that won't do it, then 99% of Smuggers are out of luck. I did all the tests that the support team asked, I think it all looks good, I am waiting on them for my next move.

Did you get your stuff working? I had to cut my photos down to 200K to get them to upload, now I can't even swap them out so they can get printed. I do wish I could get this fixed. There are NO problems on my end, I have passed every test, and so has the tracert support had me run. I just uploaded 3 gigs to CVS of all places, and it ran all the way thru, no problems at all.

    HELP!

I'm having the same problem and it started with the new uploaders. I have had cablevision at my location several times. so far i have replaced all of the cable, connectors, router, modem and cat 5 cable at my location. My computer is running a p4 quad exterme at 2.93gh, 6gigs of ram, 756mb video card and dual lan. my common uploads are between 2mb to 24mb in size. upon upload sometimes i get error messages on the upload and still the files appear, and other times i get no error messages and there are no files uploaded. I receive errors that there are bits missing. I have tried and changed everything. I have no issues uploading to other sites. I am using the standard uploader. It usually takes 5-10 different upload tries of anywhere from 200-1000 files in order to get them all uploaded. I have had my site pinged and usually upload speeds are 2.06mb per sec. It's becomming a real chore to use my pro account!. There has to be a resolution to these issues and so far i have tried at my end. Therefore i assume that the problems are at SmugMugs end. The problems ARE at the SmugMug end, I have been emailed about this from a couple others who are watching closely, hopeing to get theirs figured out. They do not want to say anything, for fear of the powers that be getting mad. I told them if no one complains, we will never get it fixed. SmugMug Support will get it figured out, they are the best I have used (to date)

Just sent you the file Andy. seemed to upload with no issues. thanks, Jeff By the way, I did try working with your team on several occasions and thats what prompted me to work with optonline. They replaced my modem, and I replaced all the cable and connections, and at their suggestion I also replaced my router. I explained to you when I saw you that I have more luck uploading with my wireless laptop, than with my desktop. On upload, it seems as though the large files upload flawlessly ( however never show up ) and small files of 4mb or less constantly have to be varified, then they show error messages on the upload page, and then for the most part, show up in the album with no issues. Large files show no errors while uploading, however for the most part never get there. I also noticed upon uploading i can take an hour or more to show in the gallery. thanks again, jeff

We have the same problems, are you running 64 bit Windows? NOTHING works on my desktop, Explorer, Fire Fox, Safari, or Star*Explorer. I went to my laptop (32bit XP) and uploaded some big files, and all the above programs work as they should.

Yes I'm running Vista 64bit. However I have no problems uploading to other sites. I also tried uploading from IE 32bit and 64bit with Java 32 and Java 64. So far this escipade between cable, ends, router and time has cost me about 600 not including lost time. I love the site (smugmug) but definately need a solution to uploading large and small files. If I can't upload full size jpegs, It does me no good. Jeff

I'm using Vista 64 bit and upload 10-25 meg image files and larger video files without any problems... Not necessarily lots of them, but uploads are never an issue.

    Hi Folks,
As Andy said we are here 365. Sometimes we get a bit behind. But we answer every email :D So if we are remiss, or late, in answering. Please contact us again. We don't need you to send an email an hour. But one reminder that we owe you an answer is often helpful.

As Andy also mentioned, as frustrating as this is. 99.9% of Smugmug subscribers see no uploading problems. The problems we do uncover, are normally fairly subtle. So please bear with us and try to answer the questions we ask. And follow the directions (usually running tests), we give.

If you have, or continue to have uploading issues. We can throw more resources at the question/issue on the Help Desk. Then here. So please contact the Help Desk. You can add Attn: Cavig in the subject line. Give us as much information as you can. If you were able to upload and now can't. Please focus on any changes that have occurred since you were last able to upload successfully (hardware, software, connection related, applications, security settings or security suite updates, firewall changes, etc...)

I just answered Decal's message and am awaiting his reply. I will continue to monitor this thread too.
