Actually - your site loads fine on my 3G now. I had cleared the Safari cache, cookies, etc. a few days ago so that there was no information about your site on my phone.

It still crashes for me. I clear the history, cache, and cookie and then opened iPhone Safari. I punched in my URL www.ruama.com and got the same results (loads about 90% of the way and then dumps to a blank Safari page). I'm using a 3GS in case that makes a difference.

I still have yet to have any site with a custom domain not crash on the first load.
It's important to point out that if I try to load the same page again after the crash, without closing the browser page, it will load successfully the second time. As soon as I close the browser page and close Safari and open it again, I'm back to crashing on the first load. You have to close the actual browser window that crashed before exiting Safari in order to reset things back to state that will crash on the next load.

And it doesn't even matter which site crashed first, the second site will work.
For example:
1. Open Safari
2. Navigate to www.greyleafphoto.com *CRASH*
3. Don't exit Safari - in that same browser page page navigate to www.ruama.com - no crash
4. Close the browser window - this is important
5. Exit Safari back to iPhone - this is important
6. Open Safari
7. Navigate to www.ruama.com * CRASH *
8. Don't exit Safari - in that same browser page navigate to www.greyleafphoto.com - no crash

For me, I can substitute any custom domain smugmug site in these steps and still get the same crash.

Is this on anyone at Smugmug's radar? There's clearly something wrong with sites using custom domains breaking the Safari browser.

I agree. As I said before, lots of people browse on their iphones. These are customers that will go away because the site doesn't load. Many of us do not like the mobile version of smugmug and prefer that our regular site load on mobile browsers. I hope that someone is debugging this given the number of people that are clearly having problems with it.

http://www.moonriverphotography.com/Galleries works fine for me on my iPhone - and I can choose a gallery and open it up. I don't use my homepage on the iPhone Web Browser because I have a flash slideshow there.

Are you saying all sites with custom domains are not working for you?

It's on my radar. I will be working on fixing it and improving the browsing experience for the iphone/mobile version of the site. There are some solutions - but the main problem is replicating the issue in an area that the problem can easily be identified and debugged.

I went there in my iPhone Safari Browser - no crash - browsed David's site, without difficulty.

I wonder why you guys are crashing?

I would update your software, and maybe reset things, too - I went to your site no crash, also:

The link you listed above crashes. Every custom domain site crashes for me when following the exact steps I outlined previously. If I try to load a second time without closing the browser or the browser window, then it will work. But as soon as I close the browser window and exit Safari, I'm back to square one and the next time I try and open any Smugmug site with a custom domain it will crash again.

What is there to update though? Theoretically we're all running the exact same version of the iPhone OS and version of Safari since Apple controls all that.
My wife also got an iPhone just a couple weeks ago and it has the exact same crashing behavior.

But just as a reminder, if I go to the same site but using sitename.smugmug.com instead of the actual domaon, it works 100% of the time.

I'm stumped- they work for me and my phone isn't special.

I just realized that the iPhone Safari has a Developer Console that you can turn on that will show errors.

Here's what I found when I loaded my page:

It's interesting to note that the error appeared early on in the loading of the page and the windows didn't close until further along in the loading process.

Hopefully that helps.

Yes! That's exactly what happens to me as well. And if there are no other browser windows open, then it just dumps you back to a blank page.

I'm dumbfounded - I can browse your site at will on my iPhone 3GS with no issues. You've updated your iPhone software lately?

Guys - have you tried rebooting your phones - completely clearing cache and cookies ... and javascript and plugins are 'On' ?

I clear my cache, cookies and history routinely. That was one of the first things I tried. All plugins are "on." My 3GS software is up to date.

OK.

This is stumping us but {JT} is trying hard... as I say, we can access your sites no problem :(

I appreciate your looking into this as its difficult to diagnose the problem or know how many people it may affect. As you can see from the video it seems to be the end of the code that causes the problem, as the page seems to load with all the graphics and then just dies.

We need to hear from other folks that are experiencing this.... thanks.

Sites are loading fine (mine, ruama, exploringlightphotography).

I also turned on Safari's Debugging Console and, even though my site loaded, there was still this javascript error:
http://www.greyleafpho...34dc561d58f68faf04.js
TypeError: Result of expression '_xtra.fn'
[undefined] is not an object.

A view of the source code on my has this java:
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.greyleafphoto.com/include/js/yui_core-min-102a5688bf3e6a34dc561d58f68faf04.js"></script>

Edit/Update:
Same error occurs on ruama.com and exploringlightphotography.com

exploringlightphotography shows 13 errors on my iPhone. The remaining 12 are HTML errors (mostly improper nesting of tags)

dangit I thought I fixed all those nesting errors, last I looked all tags were closed properly and jfriend even helped me with that. will have to look into it.

can you pm me with a copy of those html errors you found so I can look at my tags? thanks

I wish...the dubug console does not allow copy/paste. I'll see what I come up with via PM.

Ok, I did some testing and found out that it does appear to have something to do with cookies - except it's backwards of what you might expect. If I set iPhone Safari's cookie settings to "Always" or "From visited" it will crash (and it doesn't matter if I clear cookies, cache, and history and then reboot first).

BUT... if I set the cookie setting to "Never" it DOES NOT crash. However having cookies turned off is not exactly an ideal situation as you know.

affirmative- I set my cookies to Never and now no crash.

Did a couple other quick tests and found this:
If I go to ruama.smugmug.com and then in the same browser window go to www.ruama.com I do not get a crash. However if I go to ruama.smugmug.com and then leave that window alone and open another browser window and go to www.ruama.com, that second window crashes.

I'm not sure if that helps any with the diagnosis.

Are you able to reproduce it consistently? I'm still very curious about why some of us hit it 100% of the time and others none at all.
