You guys are usually really really good - but this time something is wrong. At the last look, all my pictures (thumbs and views) were coming up square instead of original. I hope settings will eventually reappear.
P.S. Having run computer shops for a few decades, I know these things happen. Getting 'frantic' usually doesn't help. Just keep working or make the decision to back out.
Got a message come up from SmugMug now on my site - thanks. That helps quite a bit...

We found the issue. But it will take some time for our systems to come fully online as they rebuild caches.
All phtos vanised..
Sumgmug was down for maintenance (again) today from around 10am UK local time and still down now 11:30am (UK peak time)
Usually this is not so bad as all images are usually available for to clients to view and from browser searches too.. read only mode.
The Smugmug status usually confirms this read only mode. Cool...
and:

I guess that depends what side of the planet you live on.
But today its different... all my photos are gone. The albums and their descriptions are visible, even the rotating thumbnails. But on opening any album they are all empty. That's almost 5000 photos from 47 albums.. all missing and not in read only mode. Not in any mode at all. Mode-less.
This morning I had some important prospective clients viewing a shoot I did yesterday. I've received many emails already saying the said photos do not exist.
scratch
A short while later..
The photos have reappeared... then disappeared.. then reappeared again.. and disappeared again..
I'm wondering if this is the "adding magic" that's spoken of? A vanishing act maybe?
Working on it. Everyone is awake and on it. West Coast, East Coast, in-between. Australia, Europe, all of us Smuggers are on. I'm sorry for no precise answer.

New Smugmug Feature, Jesus Tablet, all in the same day! It's just TOO MUCH! haha
could we have a splash page please if possible rather than slideshow code showing on the home page and empty galleries?
Unfortunately, the nature of this release doesn't allow for the splash page at all times. We know it's not pretty and we regret it, but we can't do it 100% of the time.
15% is still more than 1 out of 10, which is a lot. If you'd like to conquer the world, you definitely need to pay more attention to your costumers outside the US of A.
You mention load balancing in your post. So you have several servers running your software. Maybe you could look at updating 80% of your servers and keep the rest serving SM. When you're done switch over to the 80% and update the others. Your customers are happy because they can keep their business up and running and you guys (and girls?) can work in a more relaxed setting on the update. This is standard practice in deploying online systems.
The site being down during office hours is one the main reasons people on internet fora recommend not using SM.
May I assume that this is caused by the still reloading caches and will correct itself?
Thanks
we are in read only mode and still performing updates. We'll issue an 'all clear' on the status blog http://smugmug.wordpress.com when things should be back to normal. Until then, we really appreciate your patience, thanks.
All of my HTML-only pages are still devoid of photos.
Unfortunately, since all entry points to my site are HTML-only pages this makes it look like my site is empty. I am unable to log in to my smugmug site to splash a message across the screen - and your status message is also missing.
Please - where is the system down message?
For now, I'll add a post to my blog to let people know of the problem.
Hi Denise, I answered this just a couple posts above. We're sorry, but we can't put this up 100% of the time for this release. We know you don't like it and we do regret it. We're all working hard right now to get the site fully up and back to normal, with the new feature.
Good job guys, i am a network admin/web developer and fully understand the mess you may be going through right now... just remember not to over troubleshoot the new issues and also remember that you will not be able to make everyone happy during the process, ignore the "poor me" comments and keep your head in the code and finish the job for the "patient smuggers"!!!
Maybe it is time to scale to servers running for different world regions. This way partial maintenance can be done during the daytime (PST) for those servers.
Anyway ... keep up the good work and keep us posted.

You guys rock. Every one of you. Ignore the complainers. The downtime is worth whatever brilliant features you're about to release.
Thanks - but we'd never ignore anyone - we really try to avoid this sort of thing.
We knew we'd have some hard downtime with this release - and said so - the chosen time was the best we could do (yeah, we know it sucks for down under, NZ, Asia, that side of the world).
Then we encountered some stuff that wasn't replicable on our extensive testbeds, which is unfortunate, but rest assured, our sorcerers and Chief Geek (Don/Onethumb) are on it and working as fast and smart and hard as possible.
We'll get it done as soon as we can. Thanks to all for your incredible patience

Yes, that's why 'Moses Tablet' is already taken. NYT calls it the Jesus Tablet.
