This is STILL an issue --- doing the exact same thing months later.
smart galleries not populating even after indexing catches up --- you have to re-access the smart gallery and re-save the rules for the images populate.
Sorry that this has not been fixed yet. It is on the bug list and the programmers are aware of it. Thanks for reminding us it needs to be fixed.
Thanks for re-flagging the issue, Doc. I've noticed the same with my smart galleries, too, but wasn't quite sure if this had be resolved since it was first mentioned in the spring.
Oh dear lord! I am a new SmugMug user and I just discovered this issue recently. This makes me sick knowing it has been broke for half a year and still is not fixed. Can I get a refund?
What is the ETA for fixing this? I'm having this same problem. :-(

I've just decided that until Smugmug makes smart galleries reliable and predictable, I'm not using them for most things. Duplicate uploads take longer to upload, but are 100% predictable in their behavior as I get an immediate display of exactly what I intend as soon as the upload is done.
Hopefully Smugmug will make smart galleries reliable and predictable at some point. It is a bit surprising that they're taking 6+ months to address such a fundamental problem in an important newly released feature. I suspect it is a thorny problem to get right, but missing this in the initial release is quite a design oversight and then taking a very, very long time to fix it certainly makes us wonder what's going on.
not so smart galleries
I have just spent the last week coding a new smuggie site to take advantange of these smart galleries and now that i am testing it i find this problem arises.
Can you please inform us when this gets fixed, very frustrating news considering i recommended smugmug as a better way of viewing images to my boss since they have smart galleries but not a week later i find out it will not work properly.
Still broken. ETA for fix?
I also did a major redesign around (finally) smart galleries. And it still appears to be broken.
I was wondering why images from several weeks ago (Oct 5) weren't showing up (on Oct 27). 20 minutes of Google Searching got me here. I just don't have this kind of time to find out why things aren't working!
It's really frustrating that I waited for years for this feature; when it finally arrives, I spend >40 hours (that I didn't really have) on redesign and keyword updating.
All to find that it doesn't work!
I really hate to say this because I've been a loyal smugmug fan for years, but I'm going to start looking elsewhere. This is all becoming just too painful and time-consuming - more painful than just moving to a new service.
(Add to that the completely unnecessary hassle of organizing everything into gallery/subgalleries [especially unnecessary if "smart galleries" really were], and I'm beginning to feel that it's just not the price, let alone the hassle.)
FYI, I've referred at least a dozen customers to you - mostly by word of mouth (no referral codes). I'm certainly not going to refer people AWAY from you now (that would be mean and uncalled for because I know you all try very hard), but if/when I do switch, I'm sure it will be to a service I would feel proud to recommend!
Folks, I have replicated this and sent it to the programmers. They are aware of the urgency and hopefully we can get it fixed soon. Thanks for keeping this on our radar.
It appears this issue is worse than before. I tried re-saving the settings for my "Nicole" smart gallery but doing this still did not update the Nicole gallery to include the picture in my test gallery. This would previously force the album to update and recognize the new photo but now this isn't even working.

Bump.
It's been 6 weeks and at *least* 2 bug fix code updates (November 18, December 9) since your last post. This has been a known problem for 10 months. Can you give us any estimate of how many more months or releases will it take before this one makes it into production?

Not so fast...
What appeared to be working for me (and it did at the time), now does not. As of this AM, my smart gallery that pulls in all photos with the keyword portfolio (that is the only criteria) does not find photos loaded more than 12 hours ago. Going to gallery settings & refreshing solves the problem. This seemed to be fixed a few weeks back when uploading new pictures, but did not work on last night's uploads.
A resolution would be great. I was posting about virtual galleries off the home page in 2005!?!
I've had to refresh the smart gallery settings (with no changes) to get new photos tagged with my "slideshow" keyword to be added to the smart gallery.
Happy Anniversary!!! This break is now officially a year old and STILL not fixed. To celebrate, I just canceled my account. I still had 8 months left on my pro account but the total lack of response in fixing this issue convinced me that SmugMug was not the solution for me. Quite honestly, I feel completely cheated and would love to get my money back but I am not going to waste my time trying to pursue that. One of the biggest reasons I signed up for SmugMug is Smart Galleries. I loved the idea of them. They looked real promising. But, THEY NEVER HAVE WORKED! It's false advertising in my opinion. Oh well, lessons learned. Trust me when I say that I will never recommend SmugMug to anybody.
I am very sorry to see you go. My apologies for not letting you know that we did release another update that did fix part of this issue about 2 weeks ago. I was waiting to see if the fix did help improve things. For those of you that are having the problem, can you let me know if it is still happening. There may still be some corner cases that we need to nail down.
I am just testing Smugmug with a brand new account, before (possibly) signing up again. I am meeting the same issue: smart galleries repopulate only when I re-save their settings, and sometimes the repopulation is not even complete.
I think I had the same issue when I signed up for the first time, several years ago...
pfrize, Can you please give me details? Are you using a keyword driven Smart Gallery, or other? If Keyword, exactly how are you adding the keywords to the photos? before upload or after and which tool? Which uploader are you using? Can you give me an example? I really want to kill this bug and those details may help.
How long should it take for a Smart Gallery to repopulate?
I use a Smart Gallery to control the slideshow on my site. http://www.douglasgoodphotography.com/
I use the keyword "slideshow", and add or delete it from the keyword editor on the gallery view. My slideshow gallery repopulates now more often than not within a few minutes. But it might be helpful to understand what is a "reasonable" time to expect it to take? As I have used SmugMug more, I realize that having patience is important.
Doug, for your usecase, have you tried using the Keyword setting in the slideshow instead of using the Smart Gallery? Does that update any faster. I am thinking that it might be slowing things down.
I will take a look to see what might be going on with that but thought it might be more efficient. You can still have the Smart Gallery to check the slideshow contents but use the keyword option in the slideshow itself.

The galleries are keyword-based, and the keywords are IPTC data that were picked up by smugmug. By the way, since my last message, things seem to get better and the last smart galleries I set up populated all right. I will let you know if the problem comes back.

I added one photo to this test gallery with keywords "Nathan" and "Nicole". http://www.markandtracy.com/2010/Test/14726688_NTcHs
I have two smart galleries created that are based on those two keywords. You can find both smart galleries here -> http://www.markandtracy.com/Kids
The photo I uploaded to my test gallery does not show in either smart gallery.

This is getting OLD!!!
I keep hearing this issue has been fixed, but it never updates my "smart" galleries unless I go in and refresh them myself.

I'm a newbie on SmugMug, but can confirm this problem with smart garlleries is still an issue....
I am using a smart gallery to control my homepage slideshow.
Picked up the trick in David Wolf's tutorial:

Thanks for the pointer.

I hadn't noticed the keyword option in the slideshow itself! I just changed my setting to use it, and of course, it works just great!
