No Smugmug in Africa...

Hello,
I've been using smugmug for a few years and I never had to complain about it :thumb
But now I'm on a 2 years world tour on my motorcycle and it's very difficult for me to upload my pictures on my smugmug...
For example right now I'm Sudan where you cannot download Java as it's a country under embargo.
I could use one of the uploaders available but the computers you find here are just too old to install such recent softwares.
If only I could upload my pictures by FTP... it's simple, reliable and it works EVERYWHERE in the world on ANY computer old or new.
Just saying :wink

That'll do the trick.

The HTML5 uploader sounds as the best suggestion. I might have to update the PortableFirefox I carry on a USB key and give it a try.
Thank you all for the very fast replies!
I'll probably not come back on this forum as I try to spend as less time as possible on the internet during my trip so here are a few samples of the last pictures I'm trying to upload
Goodbye folks!

I never use java - I've always used old faithful.

Al, you use FF 3.6, why not use the HTML5 uploader?

But even in that case, FTP would completely solve the issue.

If your daughter has her own PC (which apparently the OP did not), and has access to 3g (which should be available in the major centres in Tanzania), then there should be no problem.
The "other person" didn't get your explanation. (Check the title of this thread!)

Oh, and by the "other person" I meant you!! (heehee) Just didn't know if you realized the OP (original person) was probably wanting to upload a bunch at a time, fast, which Old Faithful isn't so great for. (because yes, I saw he was in Sudan) I sure realize though that when you're out in the middle of who-knows-where, even uploading a few at a time can be magical, especially if you've come from somewhere where you couldn't do a thing with uploading. Good grief, I was in the middle of San Diego & was even having all kinds of uploading problems. Drove me batty. Then I had to come home & try to explain to everyone here why the harry I was shooting jpgs... as if there's NEVER a reason to shoot jpgs! Yikes. People need to get out more!

Try and con her into taking a netbook along, especially one with a built-in 3g modem. All she'll need to do then is buy a local SIM card and some data airtime.
A friend of mine was recently up there (in areas including Lake Vic) doing GPS map updates, and they uploaded data daily, including email. I will find out how they connected and let you know.

I'm not sure where that thread was about uploading which had several responses from people living or traveling in Africa. I'd love to hear back from any SmugMuggers living in Tanzania now or recently. My daughter will be living there for 3 months & is leaving in a few days. I'm hoping to give her an assistant password and show her how to upload to some galleries I'll create for her. However, I have no idea which of the SmugMug uploaders is going to be best, if she's using an internet cafe or some other borrowed computer. I'd like advice from someone who knows for sure, because communication is going to be sporadic. My daughter isn't taking her own laptop along. I'm not clear on which uploaders might not work in a place like that, etc.
For the first 6 weeks, she'll be in Dar es Salaam & there she'll have some internet connections now & then. Uploading to Smug will be a backup help, and after she's done that & I've downloaded to our computer, I'm thinking she could even erase some memory cards if needed. Later she'll be in Shirati, a much smaller village near Kenya's border. I don't think she'll have much, if any, computer access there. Ok, thanks for any suggestions. And if uploading fails... any other ideas?

Merged. I just used simple Dgrin search, smugmug africa, and found your thread Or, you could have clicked on "You" and seen all the threads you participate in. Now the folks that helped you before can help again.

She'll need to use either SmugMug's HTML5 uploader (in HTML 5 Supported Browser) or Simple Uploader (requires Java) based on the capabilities of the borrowed (or internet cafe) machines.

Storage is so dirt cheap, why not just get her a whole bunch of CF or SD cards and have her just keep them safe? They are small, can be put in a little protective case. She'll be shooting JPGs on a P&S, yes? She can put thousands and thousands of them on these cards.

The camera isn't exactly a P&S either; it's one of the more sophisticated ones (not SLR tho) and produces bigger files than my Nikon, unless on a lower setting which, for obvious reasons she'd rather not do unless necessary. And then of course in the background is the thought that family & friends would have this great (SmugMug!) way of keeping in touch a little with what our daughter is up to during this time. So.... uh... where are we at with HTML 5 ? Did the various misleading wordings at least get fixed by now, etc.? The last I knew, it was a bit of a work in progress.

This little device serves me two purposes. I store movies and music on it which I can watch and listen to while on the road, but more importantly I upload all of my images to it. When I get home I plug it into my computer and sync all images onto it. It hasn't failed me yet. (If you do use one, buy a spare battery with it.

So yeah, I still basically need uploading info., because no matter what one carries along with them, nothing is safer than the knowledge the photos have been uploaded to several servers. I don't know if Java is a problem in Tanzania. The person authoring this thread had trouble with it in Sudan or somewhere... If HTML 5 is still glitchy or not user-friendly, I was hoping the Simple Uploader would be an option. Don't know if that's the case though.

I actually have two vosonics and both of mine came with HDD's installed. It was an alternative I was suggesting and it may not work for everyone. For me though, I wouldn't be without.

It's 100% in production. Use it.
