No Smugmug in Africa...

Hello,

I've been using smugmug for a few years and I never had to complain about it :thumb

But now I'm on a 2 years world tour on my motorcycle and it's very difficult for me to upload my pictures on my smugmug...

For example right now I'm Sudan where you cannot download Java as it's a country under embargo.
I could use one of the uploaders available but the computers you find here are just too old to install such recent softwares.

If only I could upload my pictures by FTP... it's simple, reliable and it works EVERYWHERE in the world on ANY computer old or new.

Just saying :wink

Apparently you misunderstood the suggestion. You can email photos to your smug account. See help page at http://www.smugmug.com/help/camera-phones.

Hi, the BEST solution? Use Chrome or Firefox as your browser, then use our HTML5 uploader: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=171637

    That'll do the trick.

You're correct denisegoldberg I misunderstood the suggestion! My mistake sorry.

The HTML5 uploader sounds as the best suggestion. I might have to update the PortableFirefox I carry on a USB key and give it a try.

Thank you all for the very fast replies! thumb.gif

I'll probably not come back on this forum as I try to spend as less time as possible on the internet during my trip so here are a few samples of the last pictures I'm trying to upload thumb.gif

Sounds like a very cool adventure! And I agree with you on FTP. In fact, you can vote for it here:

Clearly all of Africa isn't Sudan. And he evidently has a large volume, which is a bit cumbersome with Old Faithful. I'm mainly interested in some of this because I'll have a daughter in Tanzania soon. Was hoping she might be able to upload to my site periodically, but I don't yet know what will be available. Waiting to find out... PS, Aurel--- I love the photos!!

Yeah, I know... just explaining to the other person why the OP wouldn't have wanted Old faithful. HTML5 has other stuff going on right now like not accepting certain file sizes or somesuch. But hopefully next time he goes to upload, it'll be fine.

Guys, html5 is out of the question. FF won't run on anything but >xp. Something tells me he's running into 98se-class stuff.

But even in that case, FTP would completely solve the issue. mwink.gif

If your daughter has her own PC (which apparently the OP did not), and has access to 3g (which should be available in the major centres in Tanzania), then there should be no problem.

I don't actually know if she'll have her PC along-- didn't ask that yet. She'll be in Dar es Salaam for 6 wks or so, which should be fine, but then she'll be kinda out in the boonies for 6 wks-- Shirati, very near Lake Victoria (I realize that doesn't tell you a thing!) fairly close to Kenya's border. Shirati does have a hospital, so someone there probably has a usable system, but beyond that... dunno. She has another 5-6 wks to find out about these things. She's not nearly so big into photography as me... I would be beside myself being over there w/o a big lens. (because they will be at some point going on safari & seeing the big animals, going to Zanzibar, etc.) So she's not worrying about this stuff yet... I'm doing the worrying for her!

Oh, and by the "other person" I meant you!! (heehee) Just didn't know if you realized the OP (original person) was probably wanting to upload a bunch at a time, fast, which Old Faithful isn't so great for. (because yes, I saw he was in Sudan) I sure realize though that when you're out in the middle of who-knows-where, even uploading a few at a time can be magical, especially if you've come from somewhere where you couldn't do a thing with uploading. Good grief, I was in the middle of San Diego & was even having all kinds of uploading problems. Drove me batty. Then I had to come home & try to explain to everyone here why the harry I was shooting jpgs... as if there's NEVER a reason to shoot jpgs! Yikes. People need to get out more!

Try and con her into taking a netbook along, especially one with a built-in 3g modem. All she'll need to do then is buy a local SIM card and some data airtime.

Anyone living in Tanzania? Need Uploader info. & suggestions
I'm not sure where that thread was about uploading which had several responses from people living or traveling in Africa. I'd love to hear back from any SmugMuggers living in Tanzania now or recently. My daughter will be living there for 3 months & is leaving in a few days. I'm hoping to give her an assistant password and show her how to upload to some galleries I'll create for her. However, I have no idea which of the SmugMug uploaders is going to be best, if she's using an internet cafe or some other borrowed computer. I'd like advice from someone who knows for sure, because communication is going to be sporadic. My daughter isn't taking her own laptop along. I'm not clear on which uploaders might not work in a place like that, etc.

For the first 6 weeks, she'll be in Dar es Salaam & there she'll have some internet connections now & then. Uploading to Smug will be a backup help, and after she's done that & I've downloaded to our computer, I'm thinking she could even erase some memory cards if needed. Later she'll be in Shirati, a much smaller village near Kenya's border. I don't think she'll have much, if any, computer access there. Ok, thanks for any suggestions. And if uploading fails... any other ideas?

She'll need to use either SmugMug's HTML5 uploader (in HTML 5 Supported Browser) or Simple Uploader (requires Java) based on the capabilities of the borrowed (or internet cafe) machines.

Storage is so dirt cheap, why not just get her a whole bunch of CF or SD cards and have her just keep them safe? They are small, can be put in a little protective case. She'll be shooting JPGs on a P&S, yes? She can put thousands and thousands of them on these cards.

Andy, thanks for merging it. I was too tired to remember the best ways of finding the thread. Well, she's got a number of Sony cards (Sony uses those Memory Stick Duo II cards), which in the first place aren't nearly as cheap as SD cards. Probably the biggest hurdle is your "keep them safe" idea. That's just one big "who knows"? When we think realistically about all the things that could happen to little tiny memory sticks in 3 months, we're 100% certain that uploading would be the only kind of safety net that would really take the worry out of it. During the first 6 weeks in Dar, they'll be riding ridiculously crowded Dalla-dallas (van-buses) where just holding onto belongings could be a fiasco!

The camera isn't exactly a P&S either; it's one of the more sophisticated ones (not SLR tho) and produces bigger files than my Nikon, unless on a lower setting which, for obvious reasons she'd rather not do unless necessary. And then of course in the background is the thought that family & friends would have this great (SmugMug!) way of keeping in touch a little with what our daughter is up to during this time. So.... uh... where are we at with HTML 5 ? Did the various misleading wordings at least get fixed by now, etc.? The last I knew, it was a bit of a work in progress.

When I travel I always carry my Vosonic! (There are other brand options as well)

    http://www.vosonic.com/product.php?PA=feature&kind=1&id_1=10

This little device serves me two purposes. I store movies and music on it which I can watch and listen to while on the road, but more importantly I upload all of my images to it. When I get home I plug it into my computer and sync all images onto it. It hasn't failed me yet. (If you do use one, buy a spare battery with it.

I don't erase my flash cards until I have the images on two hard drives. Seems like putting them on one drive that you are travelling with could be somewhat risky.

I've never seen one of these & it's a cute little device. But seeing how the couple models (and not this particular one) on Amazon are w/o reviews and are upwards of $200 and don't seem to come with the hard drive installed, I'm not seeing this happening on this trip! Maybe in the future. I also think it would be yet one more item needing battery power or electricity-- neither of which are going to be easy to come by during parts of my daughter's trip.

So yeah, I still basically need uploading info., because no matter what one carries along with them, nothing is safer than the knowledge the photos have been uploaded to several servers. I don't know if Java is a problem in Tanzania. The person authoring this thread had trouble with it in Sudan or somewhere... If HTML 5 is still glitchy or not user-friendly, I was hoping the Simple Uploader would be an option. Don't know if that's the case though.

I actually have two vosonics :) and both of mine came with HDD's installed. It was an alternative I was suggesting and it may not work for everyone. For me though, I wouldn't be without.

Sorry-- I realize now that I'm back in this thread that I never answered this. It's not just her personal decision not to take a notebook; it's about the nature of the trip in general... just not conducive. It's a college-required stay in a developing country for study & service; each student lives with local families, etc. They don't take much along at all; most are not even checking a bag. Part of the whole point is to get out of USA-mode & not be carrying around a bunch of expensive electronics, being present to what the local living experience is like, etc. That's another reason why, if they go to internet cafes sporadically (say less than once per week) she'll not want to spend hours figuring out some part of an uploader that's half-baked or that can't work in that country due to whatever systems their internet or computers are running. I just hoped to be able to show her the one that'll work there. When I checked the Shirati area recently, it appears there's little to no connection there, so Dar may be the only place to upload.

Another point to think about with a slow connection, is the length of time that the photos will take to upload. It wouldn't surprise me if your daughter needed a couple of hours to upload, just based on the bandwidth - the uploaded wouldn't matter in this case.

Yeah, that's definitely been one of our worries, Paul. Just don't know for sure... but will not be surprised at all if that's the case. I guess there's not much else we can do about it if so.

Well... I tried. You'd told me to try another browser so I wouldn't have the log-in problem. It was weird still... I logged in fine in IE w/ the assistant PW. Then went to the gallery I wanted to upload to. I hit "upload" button and then was taken back to a log-in screen again! Logged in as assistant for 2nd time, and then was fine. However, I got an error message when I tried to use the HTML uploader. It said IE doesn't support HTML 5 uploading. So, back to square one again. The only thing I could use was the Simple Uploader. I did it, but noticed we still have the same silly & confusing wording going on. Goodness! Can't this be fixed pretty darned easily? It still said Progress 10/9 . (as if 10 out of 9 were uploaded... huh??!) It also still says "Time Remaining: Uploads Pending" when it's finished! Ok, I really didn't expect to find this after so many users have mentioned this to Smug. I'm not going to enjoy explaining this, because I can tell you right now what she's going to think: that this SmugMug thing is really Mickey-Mouse. Eeuw. Please-- just... someone care to fix this! I just can't believe it's still this way, confusing people!
