That's nice. The problem with hawk photos in my neighborhood is they never land on trees or branches. They're always on lampposts or telephone poles. Not as photogenic.

Very unique pose there, Ric, with excellent details. Looks like you were shooting straight up. Maybe a flash might have provided some more light in the eyes. Overall, a lovely and interesting shot. thumb.gif

clap.gif Sweeeeeeeeet shot Ric! I am envious. I can't really get anywhere near any of the raptors in this area.

    Thanks!

Look for high leafless branches at the edge of fields. They love them for hunting.

We have lots of "pole sitters" here too.

Of course you are right about the flash...but I don't own one and probably won't...travel light and all that. Like the $600 tripod/ballhead that doesn't even make it to the car anymore!

Fabulous picture. I see all the great gear in your signature line. Mind sharing what you used for this shot? I've got a 7D but I suspect I don't have near enough in the lens department to get something as cool as this.

Just saw a Red Tailed Hawk land on the side of the paved path at "The Dish" behind Stanford the other day. He landed right next to a jogger who stopped and watched him and stayed put as my girlfriend and I walked up right next to him also, maybe 8-10 feet away. He was pawing at the grass almost like a chicken. I think he was hoping to catch a ground squirrel or mole out of their hole or something. I might have to go camp out there with the 70-200!
