See my post #7 in this thread: http://www.digitalgrin.com/showthread.php?t=154942 It's a bit old now, and I haven't done enough tests since then to see if I was onto something at all. But what I was noticing back then was that I had to set "show thumbs" to the first photo in the gallery, or else none would show. That was with no RCP. I didn't know about the possible past memory of FB though, & am not sure if the galleries I was testing then had ever had RCP. Now I'm anxious to try again. The frustrating thing was that I'd never know til it actually posted that the thumb wasn't going to show. So I'd delete that one & try again. It sounds though like this person's experience is that they're not even allowed to choose a thumb, so RCP may be doing that, or the FB memory cache of former RCP.

And just a note to add to what John said about the small "like" post showing on your FB wall. Yes, mine seem to show up under a faint heading called "Recent activity", and that heading might be part-way down your wall. In other words, it may not show up at the very top of your wall as you'd expect.

In my experience, if you have RCP set to ON, you can use Be Social>Share on Facebook and the post will go on your wall with the thumbnail. If you try to paste a gallery link into say, your status box, you'll not get the image rotator from Facebook, and no thumb will show up.

Yes, this is exactly what I'm getting from the experimental posting I did today. I tried posting with RCP on, and then with RCP off (different galleries... I didn't just change it for the experiment.) Like you said, even with RCP on, I got thumbs through Be Social. But when I tried just posting to my wall, whether my original link was to the first photo in the gallery or not, I couldn't get any thumb choice to appear. So... it's confusing. Something changed on FB or was going back & forth for a bit I think & that's why we got different results earlier in the spring/summer.

But... oh man, I just wish we'd fix our display through Be Social. It would be so nice to have a choice of what shows up... gallery description, caption, gallery title... etc. and to be rid of the ugly long link. Much of what I want to share is RCP, and so I'd have to do it through that less-attractive Be Social interface.

I'm still having NO luck. I can't share/like/whatever from any of my galleries or anyone elses gallery on FB. It works just fine on Twitter. :-(

And I have to admit, I'm stumped too - having shared successfully from your gallery to my FB wall with thumbnails no problem.

Have you revoked access to SmugMug from FB, and cleared all FB cookies, all SmugMug cookies, and tried again?

Ive been trying to play with it today but every time i click social to upload a photo on facebook I get an error message that says somethings wrong in red:
I'm sorry, but I wasn't able to reach Facebook, as they appear to be having technical difficulties right now. Please try your request again later, or notify support if this continues to happen.

    any ideas?

I was just on FB, and it definitely was having problems. I'd wait for a few hours. I wrote a status & it completely disappeared. Then it eventually posted & came out formatted oddly.

I don't know the other thread is so i'll post here...

I wish the FB and Twitter buttons were not linked to the sharing settings. I don't use the share button because it's an invitation to hotlinking and it brings visitors off my site (where the sharing links are) but if people want to share a photo with the full gallery URL, I'm ok with that.

I agree. I imagine you could turn off the SmugMug site-wide buttons on your site, and then find out how to install your own buttons. Lots of people already had them. I don't know how though; you'd have to post in the customization thread or something to ask.

If you have at least a power account, it's trivial to hide the Share button with CSS and you will still have the Twitter and Facebook buttons. Just add:

    #shareButton {display: none;}

to your advanced customization CSS and then turn easy sharing on and external linking on. You will get Twitter and Facebook buttons and no share button.

Thanks. I thought of that, and tried it, but that means going into every gallery and turn on the sharing function.

Gallery settings has a method for changing a specific setting (or group of settings) on all your galleries at once if you want without visiting each one. The solution is there if you want it.

Thanks! I forgot about that one even though I've used it before.

Now it would be nice if we add an option to change specific settings by categories. :D

Yeah, I thought it was quite an oversight that they didn't allow you to change settings on every gallery in a category. Such an obvious user need.

I realize I may be a little far afield here but here's what I'm trying to do. I want to be able to "like" my blog posts. I set up a blogger account through the fab folks at smugmug. Now I've found this "how-to" for liking a blog post, which is exactly what I'm trying to do . However, i plopped the code into the blog's html and.... nothing. I'm thinking its a combination of codes plopped into blogger. Can anyone help me sort this out?

Goal: to have a Like button and counter at the bottom of every post.

You shouldn't even have to do anything in your Blogger code to get the FB & etc. buttons for each Blog post. I sure didn't, and I'm on Blogger--
check it out... (link in my signature) there's a little strip under each post with several share buttons. When you hover over each little logo, they highlight. I think the settings for it were in a sorta different spot than some of the usual formatting things on the dashboard though. I'll see if I can find the spot where you go to turn it on & post back here. I don't know about the counter though.

Ok, I found it--- here's what you do for the "like buttons" (and no, they don't look exactly like ours here... it's a little strip... hopefully you saw it on my blog). It's going to sound confusing, but if you keep these instructions open while doing it, it should be easy.

So-- go to your Dashboard, then click on the Design tab. You should now see that page with a lot of boxes & rectangles, showing the very bare-bones placement of elements on your blog. It says Add & Arrange Page Elements in the upper left. You should see the large box that says Blog Posts. There's a small blue link in the lower right of that box that says Edit. Click on it. Now you get a smaller pop-up box that says Main Page Options . Down the list a bit, you'll see a checkbox for Show Share Buttons. That's where you turn it off or on. Make sure you save whatever you've changed in that box. I thought default was "on", but if you weren't seeing it on yours, maybe default was "off". I can't recall. I have the worst time remembering where that whole pop-up box is to be found. It's sure easy to miss-- I completely found it by accident. I feel too like I've seen some kind of counter addition, but can't tell you where. Good Luck! I sure hope this helps & that I've understood what you wanted. If you don't want those other share items, then you may be out of luck with this method.
