Thank you everyone for voting. The evolution of how the public vote is working out seems to be going quite well.
It was a very close race for at least 4 of you.
Your "Master" judge tinamarie52 (Chris) and the public vote, agreed on 5 images, giving you 15 finalists to choose from.
Congratulations to all of you! :clap :thumb
The poll will remain open for 72 hours, and any previously registered member of DGrin may vote.

Once again a couple of my top 10 are missing. What are you people thinking! Thanks, Tinamarie, for judging!
To all of the entrants, well done!
Woohoo! Thanks to everyone who voted for mine in the top 10!

Since this was my first time judging, I'll tell you what I did.
1. I ran through the photos without names or titles very, very quickly and noted the ones that said YUP.
2. then I went back and looked at each thoroughly.
3. Did it fit the theme? I looked for either the sense of one thing challenging another, a martial arts flavor or a high OUCH factor.
4. Then I looked at technical quality...composition and processing to fit the image.
When I was finished I had 15 finalists (14 of which you are voting on.)
Narrowing it down to ten was just a matter of taking the lower 6 photos and letting them battle it out in my head.
Lots of fun and it taught me something about my likes, my dislikes and my own style.

i am very honored that the shot of my cats fighting made it into the finals; it wouldn't have happened without the advice i got at the forum, so a big thanks there; and another big thanks to everybody who selected my image; and, finally, a HUGE thank you to our fabulous judge Tinamarie for taking the time to give feedback on all the images that entered.
and speaking of feedback, and since i'm here, l gotta get this off my chest; while i really like the new voting format, i have to say that i miss the unofficial feedback thread, or maybe i'm just feeling bummed that the only comments right now are Tinamarie's... so, off i go to give my $0.02 and hope others will as well.

I miss the feedback thread, too. I was very surprised that I was the first commenter on all of the images. This topic seemed to stump everyone....maybe it was even hard to make comments....or maybe it's just temporary with everyone busy with back-to-school, end-of-summer activities.
If there's no feedback thread, where do I ask JAG how she took her shot?

I was surprised by the lack of comments as well, and am guilty of not commenting. But I think this is also because the quality of the work submitted this round, mine definitely included, is lacking compared to previous rounds. It's harder to comment on photos you're not enamored with, at least it is for me.
In thinking about the current Mega Challenge, one of the ideas I had was to go back to the first DSS and think about re-interpreting the winner. The photos in that first challenge were incredible! (I also realized there would be no way to reinterpret the winning shot as a deja vu!) I do not think any of these would stand up.
Is it because the talent level has fallen off? Nope. It's because it was a tough theme and we're all busy.

I always thought that judging is the best way to create enemies
I voted though, so I expressed my opinion.
Since I did it, I think it's fair to explain why my vote went to some and not to others, rather than keep it secret.

By simply asking! Ok the quick run down is that I waited till it was dusk out and it was also overcast so that helped with lighting. Then I used a very low ISO with a long exposure...about 3 or 4 seconds I think. I did a series of shots with the club at different angles on the arch of a swing with the very last shot it was in a constant motion with a follow through. Then I had my younger son lay on the ground (a tripod was used throughout the shoot and not moved.)
The drinking came into play as we joked around with the title "don't drink and drive" as a play on words with the golf club...but that would have obscured the ouch factor too much so the title was changed. However, no one in our house drinks so we did not have any alcholic type bottle...thus the "Lee and Parrings" worschishire (sp?) bottle was the closest we could get to a beer bottle.
So in processing I merged together 4 'swing' images and faded layers and used an eraser tool to remove the unwanted pixels on each layer that blocked the arms of the previous layer. Then I cloned my second son (laying down) onto the merged image of the other son to get what you see as the final product. Oh yeah...I blurred the trees to the right of the house to give it more depth. Had it not gotten dark on us I would have found another place to shoot. I had tried with a complete tree background but that lost the details of the club completely into the background. I did this all within hours of the closing of the challenge...so no reshoot was possible.
Thanks for asking and for judging!
One of the great benefits of this challenge format is the feedback. Please, please, please comment on all of my photos. I can't learn without knowing how others see my photos. There are some who will get offended, but I think we should take that risk and do the best we can to say what works and what doesn't in the most tactful way we can. The exercise is good for both parties.
I have been busy both at work and at home this round. My folks came to visit this week, so I have been mostly absent. I'll get some comments in the gallery this weekend after they leave.
Guess that's just how I see it.
Congratulations to all the finalists!

So where are the Dailies? I keep seeing people mention them, but can't seem to find them - not sure if they are just the daily posts in each subforum or if there is one Dailies forum or what? Sorry for being stupid

I believe you get to them from your Smugmug home page. There is a link for Photo Communities, follow that link and find the Daily Photos community. You can join there if you like. Then you set up one of your galleries to be your daily photos gallery through the gallery settings page.

It was my personal goal to post a shot every day for one full year. I didn't make it...quit a few days ago. I couldn't keep up once I started these challenges.
