Upload to SM from Ipad?

What's the best way to do this? I bought the camera kit, so I can put my SD card into the ipad, but how do I upload to SM?

Not really a great idea as Apple resizes the photos on upload if you use SmugShot. Sorry.

So I should think of this as a viewer, not a storage device. In other words, dont delete the card - wait until you are on a real computer. (?)

Absolutely. Heck, the iPad is only 64gb anyhow, you must have more than that in CF Cards :)

I've been tinkering with the iOS dev tools in my spare time specifically for uploading from iPad. I have gotten it to successfully uploaded photos, although there a lot of issues to work out still so I don't know when or if this will ever be available in the app store.

And who knows how much memory will be available in the iPad 2, plus rumors come and go referring to a build in SD card lot, so it could end up being an even more useful tool for photographers. Time will tell I suppose though.

It would be quite useful. The iPad goes with me everywhere. It'd be nice to pop out the card, upload to SM, and delete from the card. Smugmug can hold the images for me until I get home to download, post-process, and reupload final versions. Folks rave about the Eye-Fi (it's a sticky in the Accessories forum) but this would be just as useful.

Well, that's at least 2 votes... I suppose I should increase my iPad programming tinkering time and see if there any showstopper limitations that would kill the idea.

I know I'm probably getting ahead of myself, but are there any specific features you would want? Personally I would like the ability to choose which gallery to upload to on a per photo basis (or at least have a default gallery that could be changed).

Let me throw my opinion out there as well. I'm on vacation right now with my iPad and DSLR. It really stinks that I cannot upload photos to Smugmug via the iPad. I'm offloading each day's vacation photos onto the iPad where they are now stuck until I get home in 2 weeks. This functionality seems like a really obvious need and it seems really shortsighted to say serious photographers wouldn't do this because of storage limitations. That argument doesn't hold water as more and more people travel with iPads only. I'm already looking at alternate photo storage/sharing options because my days of lugging around a laptop are over and it sounds like the tone of this thread is that Smugmug is dismissing this need. A big shame and I'm shocked there is not already an official solution.

If anyone has found a workaround for this please share it with me. I would like the ability to do batch uploads to specific galleries.

I just found an app on iTunes that does exactly what I want for Picasa. It's called Web Albums on iTunes. (now if we can get a Smugmug clone I'llbe happy)

http://www.webalbumsapp.com/ I've already emailed the developer to see if they might support Smugmug. This looks perfect.

I've moved on in my iPad photo workflow to Photosmith. It's not a cheap app but fantastic for what I do.

I can upload RAW files from the SD card to the iPad.
Then I can open Photosmith, view them, separate the keepers from the rejects, and add tags.
When I get back to my desktop I can import the RAW files straight to Lightroom with the tags intact.

I too want to use my iPad for SM workflow, and amazingly I got this to work in short order.

    1. Downloaded photos into desktop
    2. Stored the files on Dropbox
    3. Opened Files Connect app on iPad
    4. Opened Dropbox on iPad
    5. Captured all the .jpgs for storage in Photos on iPad
    6. Opened SmugShot
    7. Logged into SM and identified the target gallery
    8. Uploaded the file to the SM gallery using SmugShot controls

I will now explore batch uploads.

And also see about getting the files right into Dropbox or Files Connect using the Camera Kit.

Uploading photos to Smugmug while traveling -- using iPad
I bought my iPad 2 specifically for uploading photos while traveling.
Do I have to give up on Smugmug and go with some other host such as Flickr?

The whole point point is to avoid carrying a laptop.

    Switzerland is next!

I just got back from a month away in the UK and travelled with my iPad 2, iPhone 4 and my Canon DSLR. I used the camera connection kit to transfer photos from my SDHC card or iPhone 4 to my iPad 2. Once on my iPad 2, I used Filterstorm Pro or Photogene on my iPad 2 to edit my photos and then to upload to Flickr. I communicated with both FS Pro and Photogene about adding a Smugmug API to their apps and apparently that is in the works. As far as editing on my iPad 2 without the benefit of either Lightroom 3 or Photoshop CS5, both FS Pro and Photogene did a great job and were more than capable of handing my needs. All the present apps for Smugmug available in iTunes store are outdated and appear to be more designed for the iPhone than the iPad. A dedicated iPad app for uploading direct to Smugmug is still badly needed.

Uploading to Smugmug from iPad via Picasa?
I have downloaded the Photogene app. It looks like it will upload to Picasa. And it appears that Smugmug will upload from Picasa. Before I bother to get Picasa, has anyone else tried that workaround from iPad?

    What are the drawbacks?

I am used to editing with Photoshop Elements, then directly uploading (from my PC) to Smugmug. The learning curve for the iPad is steep enough without adding to it.

Wow! Thanks for this detail, Mark. Much appreciated. I'll check out both Filterstorm and Photogene.

I don't know if the ipad can do ftp, but smugftp may also be a solution for this.

    How to FTP?
There is an option in Photogene to export to FTP but I don't know what to enter in the fields (having never used FTP before, even on a PC). Where might I find instructions about Host, Username, Password, Filename -- so my photos will arrive in the right galleries in Smugmug?

I'm getting hopeful that there is a solution!

First go to smugftp.com and get your account. Then there's a login and password just like for SM. Then you choose the folder (which is the gallery) where your files get uploaded too.

    Working on using FTP
Oh, you two are very willing to make ME be the guinea pig! ;-)

I seem to be waiting to be a beta tester or something. I have emailed my request, at any rate.

As a newbie to FTP, is it a dumb question to ask whether I'll be able to access this from any WiFi in Switzerland (or elsewhere around the world)?
Questions seem to be coming from the US, when the software is in China?

With FTP, you'll be able to upload anywhere in the world on any platform that can upload via FTP. This includes smartphones, laptops, tablets, and even computers from the 1980s. rolleyes1.gif

I've been using smugftp on and off for months now helping fine tune the application. thumb.gif

    Platforms
Platforms from the eighties? All I need is for it to work with this newfangled iPad 2, preferably using free Wifi halfway up an alp.

I'm still waiting for an email back from your SmugFTP friend in China. Have I done it right so far?

Thanks for your help with this effort.

The FTP protocol has been around since the late 1970s, so a computer from even that era can even upload to SM, although it was back when hard drives were 30MB, so I doubt many files could be transferred. rolleyes1.gif

Liangzan should be getting back to you soon. I know he's been fighting some SM gremlins lately. Stay tuned. thumb.gif

If you've already submitted your information, try logging in using this simple web-based ftp client:
    FTP Server is smugftp.com
    Username is whatever you submitted
    Password is whatever you submitted

Then hit Login and you should see your smugmug category/sub-category/gallery structure. If you do, then you're set to go. All you need is an ftp client like FTP on the Go and then login using that upload from your ipad. thumb.gif

I think I have logged in, but see no Smugmug category/sub-category/gallery structure.

I am a newbie, and have no idea about an FTP client. Is that some kind of routing structure that's invisible when I upload from Photogene to Smugmug?

I have written to Liangzan to ask him what my problem is, and about the FTP client, but I suppose he will be busy with wedding plans.

I can always see about resorting to using Picasa as a middle step.

Try this in your browser, substituting your login and password:
    ftp://LOGIN:PASSWORD@smugftp.com
    for example:
    ftp://email@address.com:mypassword@smugftp.com

This should give you something that looks like windows explorer. If it doesn't, we need to work on this step first as there may be something incorrect. Once we have this down, we're more than halfway there! clap.gif

Sadly, SmugFTP is finished. Good thing I didn't finish the process and figure out how to use it. (See copied email from China, below.)eek7.gif

If anyone figures out a way to batch upload from an iPad, complete with full size files and metadata, please let me know, either as a reply to this forum or a private message (above right).

Nice try. And thanks for the support in my effort.

    ......................................................................................

    Hi guys,

With a heavy heart, I've decided to shut SmugFTP down. The main reason
is Smugmug has suspended me. I feel a need to give my side of the
    story.

What happened is a mistake in the app resulted in SmugFTP pounding
Smugmug's servers on 2 separate occasions. As a result, Smugmug has
decided that SmugFTP is not stable enough. And they decided to
suspend. The mistake in the code is my fault. But as we know, SmugFTP
is still in beta. I'm human. I make mistakes too. I can only try my
best. I already apologised and patched the code(while on vacation).
But the decision to suspend still stands.

I doubt I can continue with Smugmug being unsupportive. Thanks for the
support everyone! I suppose I'll simply move on to build other stuff.
Not on smugmug next time though =)
