PhotoSync Uploads to Smugmug from iPad
The newest version Photosync (for iPad) works like a charm, so far. After I try it out on a short US vacation, I'll let you know what I think.
I'm happy that this is working out -- and look forward to seeing what Smugmug is working on, too. I didn't want to give up on Smugmug!
Good. In the meantime, I purchased Photosync. While it does a good job of uploading, I can't figure out how to tell it to upload to certain galleries. It creates one and sends them all there.

Oh yes, that's right. They go to a new folder (which I have left unlisted so my visitors don't see it). After that I move the new photos into the correct galleries in batches. Works for me, but the whole effort takes a lot of steps. I've had to put the steps into my "notes" on my iPad to remind me each time.
I agree that a simple-to-use dedicated Smugmug uploader would be great.
What I want is an app that allows me to view my pictures AND to upload from my iPad.
Here it is, Sept 4th and still no release on the "goodies" we keep hearing about. QA shouldn't last this long. Very disappointed. Does smug mug need more testers?? I will be more than happy to help out!
Yes, I was hoping for a new solution before my trip to Switzerland. So I'll keep working with PhotoSync. I can be loyal to Smugmug a little longer, but still ... there's a bit of disappointment here, too.

Well, developing and testing a complete program, or 'app' as its known as these days, takes a lot of time. Expecting a solid, reliable program inside of a year from a company that has as much as SM has going on is unrealistic to say the least.
There's solutions out there that can do the job. They may not work exactly how you want them to, but that's just the way it is. You can either use what's available, or keep trying to get exactly what you want. If you need to get the job done, you don't have much of a choice. I understand that it's kinda insane that there isn't an app for this already from SM, but that's also how I feel about not having FTP uploading. And there's nothing that can be done about it.
Just tried the PhotoSync app at home, it looks like it could be a good solution. I start traveling again soon so I will see how it works out.
For the $2 I got it also, would be nice to have a gallery create option. So for new galleries it is a 2 step process. Create in SM then upload to that destination or a 1 stop dumping ground then move them once in SM or create specific galleries and then change the destination each time.
A SM built tool is much preferred even if I had to pay a little for it to get the better functionality.
Uploading edited files in Photosync?
If I have altered my raw file on the IPad (through Filterstorm, perhaps) can Photosync send a jpg with my changes to Smugmug instead of the raw file?
Uploaded using Photosync from w
Sorry, finger slipped and posting happened before I was ready. I was successful with uploading via Photosync to Smugmug (and Facebook) from various locations in Switzerland.
It worked great for me as a way to upload from Switzerland. The biggest problem is the automatic renaming of the files, perhaps by Snapseed, which I used for editing, or by the iPad. Instead of P(plus number) for my Panasonic G-1, it numbered the files (randomly?) and called them IMG(plus number). Now there's no way to pair with the original files that I got later (at home) from the SD cards themselves, unless, of course, I file them by date.
FYI: I was testing photosync on my iPhone and iPad. On each device, I tested the "smart" feature where it is supposed to remember what it has uploaded. Note: In the expert section, I have "keep after transfer" selected because I want to keep a backup.
I selected sync "all" and started to upload pictures that were in my camera roll. I canceled halfway in to simulate a failure. I then closed the program completely. I restarted the program and selected sync new. It started uploading photos that it had already uploaded. I was monitoring the SM site and there were duplicates in the gallery. Halfway into the "new" transfer I canceled again and completely closed the program. I opened the program and selected sync all. After it had completed there were more duplicates (triplicates) in my SmugMug gallery. Opening the program again, the sync new was greyed out.
In short, the program remembers only completely successful transfers, but it is forgetful when bad stuff happens. Or am I missing a setting somewhere that tells the program not to upload duplicates?
Update: I wrote an e-mail to the programmer and here is his reply. He replied within hours of me sending the e-mail and even proposed a solution. Gotta love that. I am hopeful that he will provide the checksum or other solution to duplicates, at least for us SmugMug users.

thank you very much for your notice. We will look into this issue and fix it with the next update.
Regarding the duplicates: We are working on this but it's hard to determine a duplicate. It can't be done by filename which would be the 'fast' way to do it because Apple constantly changes the filenames of the photos if the photos are not located in the camera roll.
The better way would be the generation of the checksum of the file and compare it with the files on the other side but this will slow down the transfer process very much. Also some web services do not allow to calculate checksums of the files. But we are currently looking into it and try to find a suitable solution for it hopefully.
Any news on a good iPad uploader for Smugmug?
Camera Awesome has nothing for me that I can figure out. I was able to try a work-around, but succeeded only in uploading a single photo from the Camera Roll to a folder called "Camera Awesome" or something.
I'm a grownup and I use real cameras. Where is the promised Smugmug uploader for grownups who use iPads for travel? Aren't there a lot of us boomers out there? Nobody I know would admit to "awesomizing" a photo anyway. I tried it and I hated the results.
Photosync works okay for uploading, although I'd like to upload directly to a gallery, without that extra step of moving the photos. It's sad that we still have to depend on a forum like this for our information about other apps to use to upload to our favorite photo-sharing site. We're the loyal ones -- you know, the ones who allow auto-pay every year, year after year.
PhotoSync does allow you to select what gallery you are uploading to. So yes, you can upload directly to the gallery. It is not the most direct path to get there, but it can be done through the changing of one setting in the preferences. To make the change:
Go to PhotoSync, click the i icon in the lower right
In the settings window select Configure under Transfer Targets
Select SmugMug from the list
In the options for the Destination Folder enable the option to "Select before transfer"
Making the change to select before transfer will allow for you to decide where the image goes to.
I travel quite a bit for work and through making a few changes in settings of PhotoSync I have not had to carry a laptop for photography use in a few months.
Reading through this makes me think I had better try out this PhotoSync app!
I also am using my iPad a lot when traveling and happily doing in the field edits with snapseed. However it would be great to upload to smugmug too instead of just Facebook.
I liked the idea of Photosmith but that Apple doesn't allow it to delete files is a pain as we're limited to 64gb which will o me for a short weekend but not for a 3week holiday and I'm desperately trying to find a solution before summer holidays mid July. Perhaps an AirStash might be the way?? Else I just buy a whole lot more SD cards....
Photosync - doesn't support modified image
A bit late to this thread, but since I'm traveling with only an iPad I've been discovering all the issues related to getting photos off the iPad. In my case, trying to share on Smugmug or print locally.
Generally I agree that Photosync is the best solution for network sharing, but the big gotcha for me was after doing simple cropping and editing in iPad Photos and exporting to Smugmug I found out Photosync will only export the original image and not the modified image. Basically Apple is storing the metadata of the changes separately and few apps interpret it correctly.
So while Photosync will get your originals out of your iPad, they will sent be as they were originally sent from the camera to the iPad.
At this point it looks like the best answer is to use Photosync, then edit the images in Smugmug, which while tedious, does get the job done...as long as you have an Internet connection. That or wait till you get home. :-(

I had to create a Flickr account and have started using it. Might have to switch over totally if smug mug doesn't get with the times
We have something pretty cool we're putting out, it's in the final stages of QA. Sorry it's taking us longer than you all want (us too!).

PhotoSync uploads full resolution files, in bulk, to whatever gallery you want. Why would we need to wait for another app?
If you want to look at all your Smugmug galleries you can ope the browser or use another app. That's what, two taps?

Maybe OS 5 will help with this. Not sure yet.
Hello!
I uploaded a picture from my ipad to my smugmug site. But I can't find the picture. Can you help?
Thank you.
