Got this shot the evening before - I didn't want to miss the opportunity. It was partially cloudy for the Super moon rise the next evening and I got some shots but wasn't happy with the results. BTW, thanks for the recommendations to get TPE, how did I live without this???
Here are the results of my efforts. It was clear on the 19th but bloody cold standing in the midst of a field waiting, and waiting. Even my dog wanted to desert me and go home
But, I persevered....
Just rising above the tree tops in the distance. f/8 1/250 ISO400 70-200mmf/2.8IS with 2Xtc attached at max. extension
A few moments later. Opened the aperture to f/5.6 Everything else the same.
Finally, played with everything at f/4, 1/160, ISO1600 Obviously lost a lot of detail on the moon's surface but was thrilled with the lack of noise from the 1DMKIV at this ISO.

Love the composition on this one with the tree framing the moon.
Super Moon Indeed
I didn't have my tripod @ my home on LI. So I had to figure something out as a stable platform. I ended-up using the banister of the stairs going-up to my deck, and had to press-down and hold the camera and lens in place , a 12-ish pound unit. Tho that mandated I had to wait until after midnight when the moon was at its highest before it lined-up with the banister and the 'Super' Moon was already 10-hours old and missing a sliver @ the top.
The 'Vivid' slider in Lightroom makes really punchy colors, which is not what I wanted here. So I used heavy saturation, and color curve adjustment/boosting in blue and yellow, but I kept the 'punch' from the Vivid slider low. I was going for 'hyper-real' to bring-out the extremely subtle colors you can even sometimes make-out w/the un-assisted eye, but not 'un-real'.
Pentax K-5 + Sigma 300mm f/2.8 EX DG + matching 2X TC @ f/6.3, 1/250s , ISO-80 ,
Lots'o processing especially to add contrast at the time of lowest contrast of the moon,
100% Crop to 1233px, then resized from that to 768px by SmugMug for sharing

It was completely overcast and raining here in Los Angeles so I totally missed out. Of all days for it rain.
