My LR 3 trial period ends today, and I'm trying to spend as little as possible on the real version (duh). I thought we were able to get a Smug discount on it, but I'm not seeing it anywhere; only a SmugPro link to Adobe & the trial version. If that's not the case, any ideas for where to find it "cheap"? Off to check Amazon....

found boxed LR 3 on sale on this site... OK or not?
I just found the DVD boxed version on sale for $201 on this site: http://www.saveintheusa.com/product.asp?pf_id=65064073 (company is "Save in the USA") I don't have much expertise in buying software. Is there any reason to be wary of buying LR 3 from a company like this? I don't want to end up with some fraudulent copy.

Check Resellers Ratings......that can tell volumes about a company......also check WHoIs that can tell you how long they have been around and where the actual owner is most of the time...I check WhoIs thru godaddy....

1st registered in Sept of 03 and expires Sept 11....private registration....so not much there but it has been around for 8 years almost....read there faqs and return policies...

EDIT: ...went and took a loook they look and sound very respectable....http://www.resellerratings.com/store/SaveInTheUSA

Only three reviews on Resellerratings-- and one is quite bad. I would tread cautiously. Caveat Emptor!

Every once in a while Amazon will have a deal on LR3, if you're willing to wait.

I saw that one review, although the person's problem seemed to only be related to overnight or very fast shipping, which I don't really care about. All I'm really concerned with is the product itself. But yes, it would be nice to know if it's legit.

Also a lot of times a person will go overboard on the negativity just because they are P.0'ed.
According to their about us they have been in business quite a long time as a brick and motar store.......pay with paypal of credit card so if you do get bit then you have a course to follow for recourse...........I get a decent vibe off their website.....

    Good Luck

Will do, Mark ! I have to decide before Monday if I want the discount. Thanks for checking out some more details, Art. And also thanks for the tip about "Resellers"... I wouldn't have had a clue to look them up on there.

Not lookin' for free lunch, just a good deal. It's not like there are never good sales on LR. Believe it or not, Adobe.com itself was selling it for $149 on cyber Monday! And while it's now $299 on Adobe.com , it's been regularly about $50 cheaper on Amazon. I really don't think Amazon is selling crap copies. So... it's not that unbelievable for someone else to have a sale on it for $200, really, is it? Companies have sales all the time. If it were $100 & that was their regular price, yes, I wouldn't think twice about it. But 1/3 off isn't that rare.

I disagree-- it's really not that big of a deal: like I said, companies have 1/3 off discounts all the time! Think about it: cameras, software, computers, dish-soap... it's not really a big newsflash item, so why would it be "all over the net"? There's tons of things discounted that amount at any given time. Lots of the folks who were hot to get LR 3 have already gotten it. That's one good reason why companies like this one may be wanting to unload some copies, as the number of people hot to get it is probably dwindling. When LR 3 was $149 at Adobe, it was fairly visible on the net, but only if you happened to be looking for it at the time -- I mean, it's still there, but I only just found it because I Googled "LR 3 on sale". I got excited, then saw the November 2009 date. The other thing is, this was probably a couple-week sale, so I don't know any reason I'd be hearing people talking about it all over the place-- I don't even know anyone who needs LR who doesn't already have it. I haven't decided yet, but just sayin'-- this really isn't such big news, not when normal price on Amazon is $247, ya know?

    I disagree--

    Somehow that doesn't surprise me.

When you do a search, for something like this, try limiting your time frame to the last month. It's in the left column on the google search page

There are lots of options.... yeah, the very cheapest one (when shipping is added) is currently $239.89 from 17th st., but there's also one for $247.75 by Software Mi, but fulfilled by Amazon-- and that's got Amazon Prime, which I have. That's why I don't see anything that amazing or doubtful "big internet news" in the other co. having it $38 bucks less, for a very limited time (and a limited # of copies... last I checked, only two were left). I mean, yeah I'm not one to go for companies that don't appear legit., but like Art says, that co. has at least had a brick & mortar store for yrs., and isn't new on the online scene either. I dunno...

Yeah, partly didn't do that because that sometimes eliminates coupons that are not real clear in their time-frame. I've had some decent luck w/ coupons, mostly on art supplies. But anyway....guess what: I read a bunch more reviews of that co. on some other sites; overall good. Funny thing though-- one reviewer (positive) is certainly my spouse's cousin! You wondered if I knew anyone...! I sure didn't expect that, although it makes complete sense, as he's a photog & reviews a lot of stuff. Interesting. Do you really think this is such an outrageous bargain though? They also have a 24-hr. sale on a number of things, & I imagine they always have this, although the items rotate. Lots of companies do this-- Best Buy, Staples, MyPhotoPipe... I'm just not clear on why you see this as so unbelievable. They probably bought a bunch of copies from Adobe on Cyber Monday & are selling them for $50 more :D .

The email I received didn't say that and I just checked with Adobe (online chat with rep in web store) an he said it didn't require anything else. I think the the $100 discount when buying the full CS has been around for a while.

I tried putting it in a shopping cart to see what would happen and it asked me to pick a version of CS, but instead I added the offer code and continued on to check out, and that seems to work. I didn't actually buy it though because I already have it. So it's probably worth a try for someone who is looking for a discount. Maybe just calling the store instead of doing a web transaction would make it less complicated.-

Thanks, Dan-- yes, you are correct-- that one deal (discount for buying CS as well) has been around for quite awhile. But this new one you found -- I think I'm going to take advantage of that one instead of the other one I'd found on SaveInTheUSA, because it would be much better for me financially if I could wait til after the first of April. Thanks for checking it out if you didn't even need it. I'll try calling as well. Will post back w/ results.

I don't post here much, but after attending Scott Kelby's "Shoot it, Light it, Retouch it, Live!" seminar in Boston a couple weeks ago, I came out really jazzed about Lightroom (I've been using Bibble the past few years). This information was very timely for me, and I just purchased it this morning using this discount (using the website - I just typed the code into the box on the order form).

So thanks Dan for this information - you saved me a fair amount of money compared to the cheapest online price I could find from a vendor I trust... --Erik

Unlikely. Lightroom (and Aperture, Photoshop, etc.) run on a 18-24 month cycle between major versions, and 3 was released last summer.

However, dropping the price to get a mid-cycle sales boost is not unheard of. In addition, pressure from Apple's recent price reduction of Aperture *could* have an effect as well.

Dan, is this $199 deal for LR 3 for the boxed version? I hope so. I plan to get it today. I'm guessing/hoping I don't need to uninstall my trial version, esp. since this is actually sort of through Adobe anyway, right? I would just get a key, I assume?

If you know anyone who is a student or a teacher, they could get it for you at a steep discount direct from Adobe. They just need to provide some proof such as a valid student ID card or teacher ID or pay stub. The discount is significant: $99 or $150 for the boxed LR3; my memory is a bit vague on this.

Thanks-- I've thought about this (does that mean H.S. and college students?) because I do have a daughter who would use LR as well. I was worried there were other limitations though-- such as how many copies you can have, or if it needed to be re-installed at some point would that be problematic, etc. I just wasn't sure. Another daughter does substitute teaching, but I don't know if subs can get that discount if they don't have a "real job" yet!
