For the record I did not know there was going to be an official photographer at the event.
And, now you know there was. Time for you to decide whether you want to be a professional sports photographer or not. You may not like what you're hearing. But see if you can find a commercially successful sports photographer (let's set the bar at the modest hight of earning $10k annually from event sports photography) who feels you should snub or fight their request and that it makes good business sense in the sports shooting business world to ignore the exclusive agreement in place. Don't take my word for it. But, I suggest if you're going to take advice on how to proceed, you listen to other people that do event sports shooting. Others have chimed in with opinions that differ. But, I'm not sure how many of those people shoot sporting events as part of their successful business.
Lou, why don't you just contact the official race photographer and be one of the shooters? They have a great day rate, pay on time and it's a lot of fun.

I'm one of the shooters. I shot one earlier this year and will be shooting 2 more in the next few months. Ahhhrooooo lol. One of the few times I get to actually cheer on the athletes while working.
