AS you can see this was updated on 22 jan , only yesterday , this has been goinfg on for weeks now and this has nothing to do with me , it is a 503 error and when i click on some of the pages above the original pge comes up , Andy told me some time ago that these would dissapear , anybody got a magic wand anywhere , please can you get this problem fixed ........Joe

Hi Joe, like I said before, sometimes Googlebot overwhelms us - and they can get a 503. It's nothing to worry about and what needs to be crawled will be crawled and has been crawled. I have some of those 503 errors too. I never worry about them.

503 errors
The 503 errors are to do with the server you are using Andy , the total has now risen to 3601 from yesterday , and some of the examples from Google which they give a 503 warning to can now not be found on the web yet when i click on them they are available , take for example Carrickfergus castle, put into Google the page and the image are not even in the first five pages of results , yet last week when the 503 errors where at 645 the seach for Carrickfergus castle came up at the bottom of the first page and the photo was in the imaqges search please see example below

I've been watching your 503 errors for a while now with curiosity. According to a definition I found online "503 Service Unavailable
The server is currently unavailable (because it is overloaded or down for maintenance). Generally, this is a temporary state."

If SM's servers were down/overloaded for a particular time when Google crawled, this makes sense. Such as if it crawled during one of the unscheduled outages, and kept that data in your report. Is there a way to limit the report to a particular time period? Like yesterday or a week ago?

My point being that if Google cannot see these pages and crawll these pages then i loose out on the pages and images in Googles results , and as you quite rightly say the 503 error is because Google cannot get it from SM'S server , if the server cannot cope with Googles request , then surely something should be sorted out at that end , is this not what myself and the rest of the people in joining SM expect ???? .... certainly does not seem to be my fault anyway , i only upload ny pics and a few words !! I don't know if it's the same thing or not but it's happened quite a few times in the last few days that when I type the address of my site I get an error saying the site is not found or it's off line or something. I figured it was just me. I have two sites and have had it happen with both but it has happened more with ACactionphotos.com than the other which is zrphoto.net .

Completely unrelated, Northernbuck. And if this is happening, please do check with your domain host for ACactionphotos.com an zrphoto.net to make sure nothing's up with them.... we've had no issues that would cause this to happen. And you can always check your site via nickname.smugmug.com as well.

There is nothing you need to do. The errors will go away. Like I said, Googlebot can at times overwhelm us and we don't let that happen - but over time the errors will disappear and this does not affect your page rank.

Andy , i was told by you two weeks ago with only 1200 odd 503 errors that they would go away , they have not , they have now increased to over 4000 , now if you click on any of the 503 errors below , they will show you one of my pages with a photo and thumbnails with alt tags in them , something that Google looks for , if it cannot find them then how does this not affect my page rankings ??? , as for the server being overwhelmed , well maybe SM should look into this as it is affecting SM's customers pages ............ Andy if you were to check all Four Thousand 503 errors that appear from Google you would be at it till Christmas , that was not my question to you , a 503 error is when Google or any other search engine cannot get the information as to my site from your server !!, you told me two weeks ago that the 503 errors would go away , they have not , they have increased now to 4,140 and 276 of my pages are classed as 503 errors in the Sitemaps , now can you not just confirm that the server your company is using is not collating the information as to my website to the search engines , this is fact , maybe you can make every effort to clear up this problem which just seems to be getting worse or ask the founder of SM Don MacAskill to look into it .............. Hi Joe, like I said, these won't affect your page rank and Google clearly has that recent image as of 4 days ago, if you'll just look at the search links I posted for you. We are always working on improving how Googlebot hits our site, and I can assure you that our Ops team is aware of these errors and that they will go down in the future.

Thanks for that Samir , hard to keep a hold on figures , but since my last post to Andy above , the unreachable has now climbed to 4182 , that is 4182 pages that Google cannot get because it cannot see the pages on SMs server !!...see below

Okay, but I'm really curious now as to why Google is hitting 503s. I mean if it was a 302 I'd understand, but a 503 is pretty serious. Does googlebot hit SM's servers that hard?

Seems once again that i am being called a liar , defination of culmative ........."Increasing or enlarging by successive addition" this is exactly what is happening due to the FACT that some search engines are not able to get info as to my site from the SM server , this is in black and white on my Google webmasters page !! i did not put it there , Google did !

Thank you Andy for your response and help , SM as a photo site is better than the rest , but the 503 errors is the thing that is stopping me from starting to try and sell the photos on my site , hopefully SMs tech people will sort this out along with the sitemap probs which appear frequently

Joe, how is it that 503 errors are preventing sales? Your photos are being indexed and your photos are being found on Google. I have explained several times that we (SmugMug) aren't going to let Googlebot run crazy on our site and thus affect performance.... so we throttle Googlebot and do other things as well that I will not go into.

I fear that you are not reading my posts here at all. Joe - go do some marketing, blogging, Social Media, newsletter, speak at an arts club, work with other sites to get your site linked, take some photos There's plenty for you to do.

I also seriously wonder why you think that these errors on your webmaster page are keeping you from selling your photos.

I only thought I had half a bajillion uploaded.

I've seen them do the same on my site, so I can imagine how bad that can be at SM. Once every few years, about 10x as many as normal slam my site, a lot of times when Google has changed their algorithms. It makes sense to throttle them back.

Is there a "a Retry-After header" (http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec10.html) being used? If not, setting that for 12 or 24hrs might ward off Google treating these as 500s, which it seems like its doing, right in line with the rfc spec.

I think I have an idea, but correct me if I'm wrong Joe. In my case, before I turn on my SM site to google, I want to make sure that the thousands of hours spent properly keywording and doing seo friendly work will pay off. There's nothing more frustrating than to work on something and then it not pay off. :cry
