Tina - All Grown Up!

I shot a few photos of my oldest daughter, Tina, today so we could mail fresh prints out with her college graduation invitations. She will get her Biology Pre-Med degree next month. Then it's back to school....:rofl

It sure was nice to have her home for the weekend AND to get a chance to do a few photos with her.

I had no one to hold the umbrella stand so most of what we shot was natural light.

Great shots. You must be very proud of your model-beautiful, genius daughter. Just don't tell me she also spends her summer breaks traveling to impoverished nations to rescue orphans. Because then I'll go from admiring her accomplishments to hating her for being too perfect.

These are terrific images Jeff. All the techicals are 10+.

Now on to the important part. My lord but she puts the sunshine to shame. iloveyou.gif If I was her dad, I'd be sleeping with a shotgun at the ready, esp. Since it's legal down in the bayou.rolleyes1.gif

I was a little surprised by that shot. My 17-55 F2.8IS lens is usually my sharpest tool for these types of shots, but I didn't even mount it. This was with the 70-200 F2.8L IS at F4, 1/200 sec, and 150mm. Both eyes held in focus, but it falls off dramatically at her cheek.

I shot most of the frame fillers on this shoot with a 50mm F1.4 lens. I didn't like them as much.ne_nau.gif

We are a tad proud Trudy, but mostly we are thankful that (knock on wood!) we have been so blessed.

Never had anyone describe any of my photos as "stunning. brilliant, and divine" before!

    But, Ill take it!

Her hope is to get a Physicians Assistant degree and work in dermatology, but time wil tell. My daughter in law is a PA also. She wanted to do dermatology as well, but has instead settled in with a bone and joint clinic. She is having a blast doing hip, knee and shoulder surgeries and has forgotten all about skin.ne_nau.gif

Nooo, no third world countries, and she has spent most of EVERY summer studying for the MCAT test. This will be her first summer to not have to do that.

-Mother nature is, perhaps, as carful as she should be about giving daughters away.

-I have a shotgun, but I have never slept with it.

-As far as I know, there isn't any thing that is illegal anywhere else in the world that is legal in the bayou. Not sure what you are alluding to there.

Thanks guys. I agree, that #5 has a nice blend of flash/ambient. I think if I had underexposed the BG any more it would have been too much. We were blessed with a rare blue sky that day. It was about 1.5 hours from sunset. After I set the flash up and got her on the bench I only had to wait for the sun to slip behind a cloud.

She had a hair band around her wrist that we both missed in many of the shots in this set. It didn't show in this one!mwink.gif

She has always been confident. We've told our kids all along (like any other parents) that they CAN achieve anything they set out to achieve. Of the three, she has never EVER faltered in her belief that THAT is true. She is a "Go- Getter".deal.gif

Were the natural light ones all taken in open shade or was it overcast? What were the conditions like. Excellent job.

It was a rare "blue sky" day for us with big puffy white clouds dotting the sky.

1,2, and 3 were taken in open shade.

4 was taken in dense shade, but with reflected sunkight on her back. Flash used.

5 and 6 were in the open. We waited for a cloud to blot out the sun....and shot. Flash on 5. No flash on 6.

I agree with much of what has been said here, lovely portraits of a beautiful young lady but I do have a few nits on #4 where the whites are blown on her hands, arms and hair in some areas where there is a complete loss of detail. Exposure on her face is spot on where it matters most so I suppose this could be attributed to a stylistic approach. Also I like the discreet use of artificial light on the ones where you did opt to use flash, very well done.
Definitely #5 and 6 are my faves of the set.
    Bravo!

Jeff, you clearly have skills. On #2 and #5, I would have thrown the foreground/background out of focus more, especially #5 where the bench seems sharper than your daughter. I love my bokeh.

    I love bokeh too.

Unfortunately I am married to a crop sensor camera still.

    #2 was shot at F3.2 and 150mm

    #5 at F4.5 and 135mm

Not wide open on either shot, but on a full framer things would have appeared quite different.

BTW, she is very sharp in #5. The image size disguises that I think, but you can still clearly see some stray hair strands.

    Here is a larger version....

I printed enough of 4 asnd 5 in wallet sizes and #2 in 4x6 to send one of each with her graduation invitations. #2 was my favorite of the set.

#4 was a very tough shot. My thoughts at the time were to let the entire BG blow out and pump in just enough flash to bring out her facial features.....but that didnt look as good in reality as I had envisioned......so....more flash power....and more....until this. I am not super happy about the resulting flatness in the lighting, but I loiked the iron work and pose. The blown highlights in this instance dont really bother me.

I will try the same location out on another day....with more favorable lighting. This is a morning or overcast day location for sure.
