OK people of the People Forum... let's see some of your people shots that have really shallow DOF. I'm talking those shots where you opened up that lens as w-i-d-e as it would go. If you don't have one, go shoot one and post it! Please post lens used and aperture setting.

Much of it has to do with the distance that you are from your subject. For example, with my D-700 and a 105mm lens, if I am ten feet from my subject i have about 5.5 inches that are within the limit of acceptable sharpness. If however I am only 5 feet from the subject i have 1.3 inches of acceptable sharpness.
Here is a nifty little DOF calculator:

get both eyes parallel to the camera..if the subject head is at an angle to the cmaera then I would avoid shooting at 1.4 unless they were standing farther away. Also if it is a 2.8 lens you have more latitude of course.

As the distance from the subject increases, the depth of field also increases. At f/1.4 and a subject distance of ~3.5ft, the depth of field is razor thin...I love that look but no margin of error. I suspect several of these images were cropped giving the appearance that they were shot closer than they really were (or stopped down).

The other guys got your answered covered but I just wanted to add that you should never feel embarrassed to ask a question. Well, maybe if you want to know what color my undies are, then maybe a little but still, ask away.

Great shots everybody! Love it. I'm doing a shoot with a model on wednesday, so I'll grab a shot or two (hundred) then and see if I can't get one with the shallow DOF for here as well.
I'm actually wearing Superman underwear today.
