Yangchen that DF what lens did you use ? nice capture and the second one is berry nice:D
Thanks for your encouragement; much of the credit has to go to Nature for being beautiful! It's a little inappropriate that the DF was nuked with a 400mm f/2.8 handheld , that being all I had when it happened, sorry. Was looking for birds but found none.
I'm having a good time reading this thread, admiring the 'ugliest' bird and seeing dragonflies lined up like F-14s on the Nimitz. I also quite like the photojournalistic take on the ray
pixelpeeper if you have a smug mug account you can copy and post in one thread ,I did what you are doing for a long time and it works fine ,just like your 'shots
Kent -that is easy I make the rules so I only have Jeff to be mad at me and no matter how I do it at the end you have 1 person that says ---NICE job Jeff --and 100 and 1 that say That jeff is a jerk what does he know bad pick .That said dgrin already thinks I am well let say stupid ,so I am good to go
superduck -very good and funny
Donna all 3 but #2
ks Very nice now you may have noticed but I do like ospreys and if you can get a shot of a osprey taking out an eagle ----that shot will fly to the top :ivar
All the shots so far are very nice the big thing is to have fun and wildlife can be shot with any camera ,any lens. Just walk and stop watch look around and a challenge entry you do have
Donna and Alan A good ?? and no I do not have to see them but if YOU post a shot like this --- I will but you will not win maybe the funny 1st but not the mini

AH 400mm2 I have never played with that lens but if it is like the 300mm2 [the great one] maybe I will rent one for a day and see what I can do .I walk around with the 200/400 most of the time a very good lens not great but very good. Oh yes and the nuked does fit the 2.8 group
I was wondering if the 'investment' would be worth the shot (been veggies for nearly 3 decades) ...so maybe not
pp
I shipped it this morning -tracking # bird with no feathers hard as a rock .Also please read the label
not for eating just for shooting ,it may be a bit soft so you may have to sharpen a bit
I know this one won't count since it's not wildlife... but it does have wings and I just love my endeavor pics.

1. This was taken with one of my first digital cameras--a Kodak point-n-shoot.
2.
3. It took a lot of patience for me to get this one. The monarchs didn't want to land on the flowers close to where I was sitting for some crazy reason.....I think I sat outside by these flowers for hours on different days just waiting. Hubby thought I was nuts, but I ended up with a few decent shots so it was worth the wait.

How about a Bluejay taking one out.
Or maybe a peregrine.
(of course these are just for fun and not part of the challenge)
I'm amazed at how "ballsy" bluejays can be. They've bee buzzing my VERY aggressive tomcat in my backyard for years now. He's even snagged one or two (over the years) but they still come back to nest in our oak. It's really quite a show. Hey! "lightbulb"... come spring anyway!

At least for me, the 400/2.8 is an optimal compromise between speed and magnification for telephoto work. Worth taking for a spin. Sometimes I have wished I could zoom out to 200 - which is where the 200/400 would be much appreciated The following (abusing your clause allowing posting of aircraft ) is probably the most challenging photo I have tried with the 400 - anything slower would blur the subject even more, anything with less magnification would just leave me with even fewer pixels. Sorry about the noise. What's the '2.8 group'?
Boeing 747 takeoff, Singapore-Changi International
How about some bat pictures? I haven't got any, perhaps someone could go out and fire some 'cruise missiles' at them. Would be interesting to have representatives from the mammals.
I do have a few bat photos but they were of sleeping bats and were taken 15 years ago with a point and shoot camera. If I could even find them. I do have one taken by my granddaughter (so not eligible for the competition) (just posting a URL so there will not be a mistake about whether it is elegible.
I forgot I had some old Bat pictures... this was taken at the Columbus Zoo back in 2008.

I have a quick question o my submittal. I didn't see this specifically mentioned in the rules and being new here I want to be a good sport. When the contest started I fairly quickly put up 3 similar macro shots that I'm actually satisfied with but since then I snagged a few other nice shots and I was wondering where things stood as to replacing a shot or two mid çontest. I don't want toruffle any feathers... pun intended! Thanks. This is really funfor me.

a guick answere YES you can place play shots in this mini and as long as you only have no more than 3 for the real [swap as many as you like] -things with wings -you are good to go
Well, like all other wildlife 'togs, I've got the odd one or two pics of subjects with wings lying around ... wondering about a 'sub theme' the wedding related phrase ... something old, smthg new / borrowed / blue etc came to mind.
Couldn't find the (very) old pic I was looking for, so will add this boring 'ol swan pic instead.
This was taken a couple of weeks ago ... for the 'new'
This is the 2b's one (mainly the blue one from loss of the stuff )
Was sitting @ pc nearly 5 yrs ago when it made its presence known - I wondered where it'd land.
Eventually chose my L hand - so, having macro rig (20D / mpe) nearby I decided to have a go ... setting it all up single handed wasn't partic. easy ... but this is one of the frames I took.
Wow! Now THAT is discipline! The translucence showing the blood flow is incredible! It's shots like this and some recent good luck of my own in the garden (with a kit lens) that have me hovering over the confirm purchase" on a nice macro lens. Need more research though.

I agree, it's an astonishing shot.
You mentioned wanting long lenses in an earlier post, and I'm just about to spend a load more money in that direction, but a top quality macro can turn your whole back garden into a photography safari day out for a fraction of the cost of top quality long lens shooting. I see you are Nikon kit, if you were a Canon user I could very easily recommend which macro lens.
Thanks for comments, guys ... but I think mrs pp would probably spell 'discipline' ... 'stupid' as she's had malaria 5 times in total.
I hasten to add I'd not have done this when working in Africa ... (where she got nobbled)
superduckz - as others will also suggest, a macro lens with a focal length of approx 100mm (believe Nikons are 105?) or 3rd party like Tamron etc are 90 will get you off to a good start.
A simpler, cheaper - and also useful elsewhere suggestion is a set of extension tubes - just to see if it's your 'thing'
Just make sure you also budget for a flash + bracket (easily home made) in the mix.
Btw - I fully agree re AG's comments about the wealth of potential subjects in the back garden ... or even nearer, in fact ... I once spent some time one winter chasing / snapping away at fruit flies on discarded banana skins on the kitchen draining board.

Now, do you need to see the wings....? If so I will find more.
