Will the 70D utilitize all the nifty new features of the 600EX-RT flash?

    ...

    According to this page: http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_70d#Specifications
    "External Flash Settings
    (1) External flash function setting

    * Flash firing, E-TTL II auto flash system, flash mode, wireless master, zoom, sync setting, flash exposure compensation, FEB, and clear setting.

    * With the 600EX-RT and ST-E3-RT, radio wireless transmission control is possible.

    (2) External flash C.Fn setting

    * The actual setting options for (1) and (2) will differ depending on the Speedlite used."
The way I interpret that is that the 70D will have wireless optical master/controller capabilities over a compatible external flash (probably similar to the 60D). If you want wireless radio master/controller capabilities then you will need to use an ST-E3-RT to control the 600EX-RT.

Yes, no doubt. I'd bet there will also be a 500EX-RT by announcement time as well.

My salesperson at Precision Camera just verified this with actual hardware. The 70D will not remotely fire a 600 flash without the wireless controller.

Why would someone buy a 7 D when the 70 D seems to be better

    WOW!!!!
    Just seen this post.
Why would someone buy a 7 D when the 70 D seems to be better

Much of the Canon 7D is still superior to the Canon 70D, but the 70D has enough qualities and capabilities that it is likely the best of the xxD Canon bodies yet. Formal testing and user testing will show the true nature of the 70D.

7D has twice the shot buffer in JPGs and half again more buffer for RAW files. 8fps vs 7 fps. 100 percent viewfinder coverage vs 98 percent. Less shutter lag for the 7D. Much better construction for the 7D. Dual-axis electronic level. PC flash terminal on the 7D. 7D uses CF cards vs SD cards for the 70D. (CF cards are potentially much faster both for buffer transfer and for transfer from card to computer.)

The replacement for the 7D will probably be better still (... and pricier too).

It's always important to explore the qualities that are important to your purposes and individual style of shooting. Quite possibly the 70D will match the needs of many Canon shooters.

Ziggy, what are the shutter lags for the two cameras? For the price delta, and the fact I'm not doing anything hard core yet still, I'm itching for a 70D instead of a 7D. :)

    According to: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-70D.aspx

Shutter Lag of 59ms vs 65ms for the 7D vs the 70D. There are also likely differences in mirror blackout and AF lock, but the 70D hasn't been tested yet.

Also see: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E7D/E7DA6.HTM for more 7D performance specifications. (Again, the 70D hasn't been tested yet.)

I'm not meaning that the 70D should be considered slow. Likely it's a step up from the 60D. For action and sports, and for active kids, my money is on the 7D in good light and probably more similar than different in lower light.

Additionally, the 7D shutter is rated for 150,000 actuations, while the recent xxD series shutters are rated at 100,000 actuations (but the 70D has not been rated yet). At B&H they only show a $300 price differential between the two bodies.

It's just that, all things considered, the 7D shouldn't be counted out as the top of the Canon APS-C/crop-1.6x bodies.

I see what you're saying Ziggy. From what we know today, with no field testing, the 7D is still likely a better sports/action camera, but the big difference with the 70D is the auto-focus abilities while in live-view (for video, for instance).

    That's an excellent assessment. thumb.gif
