This is a no brainer or at least should be. Come on SmugMug, the very least you can do is respond to the people that use your service to host their photography websites. The SEO advantages are obvious and useful if that option was available. I didn't complain at all when the prices were raised and I have a SmugMug Pro account. Add the Google +1 button are explain why not. You owe that to the subscribers and you know it. Quit hiding behind silence, it's not your style and not consistent with your pledge to provide answers to questions such at this one.
Somebody at SmugMug needs to step up. The sooner you address the issue the better. You're better than that SmugMug.
This is still in the works. Trust me, as a big G+ user myself I have advocated for this plenty. It's known, I will keep you updated.
Michael, please don't take this the wrong way, I really do believe you are sincere in your reply but what are we supposed to think? It's been TWO YEARS since people have been asking for this!!!!
It can't possibly take Two years to add a +1 button to SM - I added it to my site in about an hour & my html skills are very limited! Yes I know SM is far more complicated than a personal site but I'm sure you have people that are far more skilled than me at doing this kind of stuff!
My guess for a long time has been that there's some kind of Smug - Google problemo. When you think about it, nearly every feature or issue that has anything to do with Google around here either takes eons to implement, has a lot of glitches, just doesn't get talked about, or there's a marriage of sorts & then it breaks up after a time. There's the whole Google Maps thing. Then there's the no-longer-allowing-GIS-to-index-RCPed-images-thing. Then there's the problem with the Smug widget-thing on G+ pages (idk if that ever got fixed; I never really used G+. I just know it wouldn't work any longer if you edited it, & that went on for at least a year). Then there's this interminable wait for G+ button.
If there is anything to this, I wouldn't be necessarily blaming SmugMug. I can't stand a lot of Google operations' methods and/or assumptions and feel that Google has a lot of rather insidious methods that absolutely do not benefit real people. They get me perturbed on a weekly basis. Cannot stand all the forced one-login-for-anything-Google policies; that's just nasty. Yes, you can work around it, but the workarounds cause lots of extra hassle. There's a whole host of other things...& they're all tough to work around if you have an Android phone, use Panoramio, have Blogger, etc. Maybe I'm totally wrong, but no one can argue that we've had a lot of Google issues around here. Or that Google would own the universe if it could.

Google+ counts are absolutely key for SEO. Why hasn't this been done yet?
there's an existing FR here:
