I'm gathering my courage and asking for constructive feedback on my site so I can make it better. :hide

I've figured out most of the customizing, but there are still things that confuse me, and it is sometimes a trial and error process trying to get the look I'd like. So along with your suggestions, perhaps you may have to guide me through the action you advise.

Yes, Rob Ashcroft, you may throw the rotten eggs. As I told you, I know how to duck if I need to.

Thank you, folks. I appreciate your help.

I like the look of your site. I would suggest having some kind of background (even with a low opacity) for the header. Because it stays in place when your scroll it, the logo and menu get lost in the pictures under them.

Thanks for posting it here after our emails.

Overall, I like your site quite a lot. My first impression (a favourable one) is that it looked like one of those scrap books you used to get with the textured thick paper. I think it's that background image you have that does that. It makes it feel quite warm and welcoming, and doesn't detract from the images at all, which BTW are very good. I like the profile detail, although I'd drop the self-deprecating bits such as "They may be colourful or dull" etc. Let viewers make up their own minds. The first paragraph has a different line spacing and perhaps font-size than the rest. All of the text is a little large to view. Put your name on there, and a bit of bio about yourself? You keep referring to 'I this, and I that' but we don't know who 'I' is.

I like the banner image of the ice, but perhaps crop the top third off to make it smaller? And that watermark doesn't look good on the banner. As Wayne said, the scrolling menu is almost impossible to see and clashes with the image titles when scrolling. I'd either fix the menu as static or change the colour if you can.

Watermarks on images... I used to be a Moderator on Cambridge in Colour forum, and someone on there used to be always going on about watermarked images - wouldn't even look at them. Personally I have never done it as I think it spoils the effect. I know there are some *******s in the world who will steal your images, but would they have paid you for them anyway? Ask yourself exactly what it is that you are losing if someone downloaded and used your image?

Overall, I find the site very good. Just a few tweaks to make.

Nice. One thing I saw that I fixed on my Preview site is the cut-off text under folders and galleries. There is custom code to fix that so that it wraps underneath and you get the full text - somewhere here...sorry, can't remember where. I think it was written by one of the Allan's here who helps lots of people.

I decided to turn off the header pinning as it just seemed too distracting. Folks pretty easily figure out to scroll back to the top to use the menu - imho.

On the keywords page, you may be able to add a text block with just a space in it to make the SmugMug footer not crash into the last line of keywords. Or some margin changes.

There is custom code to remove the little icons in front of your folder and gallery text.

Something weird on your search page. First (not weird but maybe not good), on my 15inch Macintosh laptop with Chrome, the actual search box is not in sight under your image. The weird thing is that if I scroll down, I can see it; but if I scroll a little further, it DISAPPEARS altogether. Scroll back up a little and it comes back. Very repeatable. May be a bug. You might ask SmugMug help to look at it. Anyone else see this?

Your "snowy egrit" taking flight. Maybe it is called that where you took the shot. In the USA, a snowy egrit has a black beak and yellow feet! ...just saying. Great Egrit?

Hope this was constructive and not critical!

I've seen sites that belong to camera clubs where quite a few different members share the site, each with their own folder of images. It seems to work quite well - and how else could you do it? I'm not quite so sure about two photographers sharing a site - it's a bit either/or split down the middle.

There seems to be problems with the link http://www.jcubedphotography.com/ChrisW/ChrisW-Friends I'm getting a greyed-out folder, and no images but galleries under the folder. That doesn't happen with the Chris side of things.

I'm on a large monitor, and the background images runs out at the bottom. You might want to try a taller image, or repeat it?

Some detail about the two photographers would be good.

It works because we basically go to each event together and whatnot. Lots of trust. There are actually no photos in the folder. I don't know how to repeat the image, and most of my images can't be taller.

I'd suggest to un-pin your navbar and also on your home page I think it should only best a few of maybe your favorite galleries. I find all the scrolling may get a customer to not know where to go and just leave the site. I love th text you used for you header. I'm not a web designer or coder in any way shape or form but that is my two cents.

Thank you for you suggestions. BTW, I agree with you about the watermarks. I have never liked using them.
And I like your other suggestions too. It's is a work-in-progress. Two steps forward and one back. I will be posting some specific questions soon, I think. Some things just don't seem to work.

    Thank you very much.

First, you're absolutely right about the egret -- it is the Great Egret. It was just down the street from me in The Baie de Vaudreuil, Quebec. Thanks for pointing that out.

Yes, the keyword search page insists on being weird. I have added text boxes and liked the results in preview, but as soon as I publish it goes back to weird.
I will have to find a smaller screen to see what you mean about the search page. I often seemed to get the results I wanted by fluke, so maybe I made choices that I didn't realize.

I really appreciate your comments -- Im taking all of them into consideration and working to correct the problems.
    Thanks.

    final revisions?
    http://pileofprints.smugmug.com/

Thanks to all the advice here I finished a revision of the site linked to above. I'd like to hear any additional suggestions.

Special thanks to Nicholas Sherlock for his hack to change the background image on refresh.

    http://www.sherlockphotography.org/Customisations

I'm not really using it for a background image in the normal sense, so I'd like to know if the opening "cover" page of my site looks reasonably alright on different sized screens. I don't think it can be perfect everywhere. The attached image shows how the front page looks on my laptop.

The adjustment Sherlock recommended to make this work for me are in this thread:

I knew that was going to happen.

I guess I should try to adapt the load random photo on refreshcode to a photo box instead of a background, since showing a photo is really what I'm doing,

I like your site for the most part.

There are two things that jumped out at me. The first is that I find your site name to be uncomfortable to read. I think it would be improved by using bold text or by moving the letters so they are not on top of a photo.

The second is if I click on the navbar entry to bring up all galleries for that navbar button the tiles are grayed out and again you have very thin text on top of an image, not white on gray with colors. Again, I find it very difficult to read the text. On top of that the grayed out images don't tempt me to enter the galleries.

    --- Denise

Thanks for your feedback Denise. I've done a lot of changes to the site since then and a lot of CSS and coding. The homepage has got the most attention. A news section is now on the homepage as well.

I've got troubles with the rounded corners of the top banner image on Safari, they just remain square regardless of what I do, yet they work fine on iOS safari. headscratch.gif

    Cleanup advice need

I'm gathering my courage and asking for constructive feedback on my site so I can make it better. :hide

I've figured out most of the customizing, but there are still things that confuse me, and it is sometimes a trial and error process trying to get the look I'd like. So along with your suggestions, perhaps you may have to guide me through the action you advise.

Yes, Rob Ashcroft, you may throw the rotten eggs. As I told you, I know how to duck if I need to.

Thank you, folks. I appreciate your help.

    aj

I know the feeling. Made the mistake of volunteering to run the booster clubs website for my sons football team. Ended up with 2 sites. A godaddy account www.hickoryfootball.org and a smug mug account http://hickoryfootball.smugmug.com/. The smug mug account was only for pictures taken by 4 different volunteer photographers (all ametures and parents including myself and my wife). After getting the website up and running, I started to tackle this monster which was sitting in its default state and in legacy mode. Now this site is pulled in as an IFRAME and the parents no longer have to leave the original website. I have been working on this for about 3 weeks and had to go live as I was tired of constantly updating the pictures page and this site at the same time.

Any help on cleaning this up a little further would be greatly appreciated.

The nav bar is pretty neat, as is your whole site.

On your home page you have a distinct shaded header region. You could try repeating this shaded background style for the footer and the centre region where you have a small slide show going, try putting a full width background slide-show in that place if you can pull it off (only with fading transitions, no zooming effects).

That will look really, really great. Love the photo of the bridge with the clouds. thumb.gif

That's an interesting idea you got there I'll give it a try and see what I can come up with. Love input like this! Always love to hear how to improve my site.

Brando I actually just use a CSS navbar generator to make my navbar since I don't know much about code I try to find the easiest ways to do things..off the top of my head I don't remember the websites name bu if you want it I'll try to find it for you just let me know..also your code worked great for the light box. I substituted your background image with mine and I love how it looks you can see it here http://www.k-ophotography.com/FineArt/Landscape/i-JwBCgCX/A. Thanks again and let me know if you need that website!

I'm a big fan of simple is better, so that was my take on my new smugmug site. I had previously taken up with squarespace to get some nice professional looking galleries to go with my smugmug hosted images, but I hated that I had to keep both updated and the traffic between them didn't flow very well. Very happy to have everything back in one place, and I must say that the new galleries match very well with what I could get from squarespace.

Jeff, You have no idea how happy that site makes me. For one, you were thinking outside the box and created something beautiful! Also, I love that you showcase the business and services first and the photography and video second. Bravo! I sent it off to the entire company I was so impressed. thumb.gif

    Your site looks good.

I do have one recommendation though - it looks like you have set the breadcrumb to only show the folder name and not the gallery name. Without the gallery name and without any description on the gallery, when I have a gallery open I have no idea which gallery it is. Either show the full breadcrumb or add descriptions to your galleries.
