A better way for my clients to download galleries or sets of photos

I don't like the 'manually generate a URL and send it via email to clients only for them to come back to me 2 weeks later complaining it no longer works' approach to downloading galleries.
There has to be a better way, right?
Ideas:
- have a gallery setting which simply enables a 'download gallery' button. Great for e.g. commercial commissions where the only people looking online are those that have paid for the photos.
- download gallery option visible to all, but only useable with a password. (like Zenfolio, apparently)
- URLs which either don't expire, or that have an expiry date set by me.
- ability for my clients to collect a subset of photos as they go through a gallery, then download them all in one go (Photoshelter model I think?)
I'm sure there's lots better ideas than mine out there....
