California Condor
I hiked to an elevation of approximately 1,400 feet at Pinnacles National Park in California just to get the opportunity to photograph this amazing bird. It was one thing to photograph this juvenile condor but a completely different experience to hear the adult condors approach from behind me and perhaps only 10 to 15 feet directly overhead as they passed by me. They sounded like small aircraft! It’s my favorite moment in birding!
The Black-crowned Night Heron is one of my favorite subjects. The transformation from juvenile to adult form is truly amazing. It's still hard to believe they're the same bird. Images taken hand-held, no cropping.
Here's an example:
1.Black-crowned Night Heron (juvenile form) Gorgeous orange iris.
2. intermediate form (transformation of plumage and an orange iris giving way to red)
3. adult form (stunning red iris and complete transformation of plumage)
I always enjoy seeing your birds Tony.
What kind of bird is this one? Is that really the shape of its head, or is it a feather effect? (I assume it's feathers, just needed to check!)

Hi Denise,
Photos 2 & 4 are Western Grebes. I've consolidated a few Western Grebe photos in this reply that I hope you'll enjoy, as well. Yes, like many birds they can raise their crest feathers. Beautiful bird, to be sure!
