Just got back from eating at Jack Stacks in Kansas City. :eat
If anyone needs me I'll be in a rib coma for the next 12 hours.
Ok so are you visiting or are you from around KC, seeing how you just had Jack Stack? I would like to do to meet up with folks around KC if I can get anyone around here to reply and work something out. Let me know who's interested.

Sorry, I was just visiting. I just returned home, which is Chicago. I was visiting friends in Manhattan KS. Kansas City is a great town though. The colors will be at peak in a couple days I'm guessing. Hope you can get some people together. Good Luck!

Anyone interested in the St. Louis, MO area? I'd like to get a group and meetup down by the Arch or union station and spend a Sat or Sunday shooting st louis!
We've also got the Chicago SMUG going on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at Dan Gin's studio in the city. As long as I'm able to I'll be at each meeting. Stop on by and meet some other Chicagoland photographers. Network and maybe even learn a thing or two.

I might go to the Blurb thing, just won't know if I'm traveling or not that week until the time gets closer.
Had a lot of fun at the Chicago SMUG as usual (I've only missed one so far, the 2nd one, due to traveling for work). Unless work has me out of town, you can always look for me at the Chicago SMUG's too
As far as the 2009 Winter Carnival, is there any reason you should not count?
Sounds like a fun time at any rate.
Ziggy, that smart arse reply was from my wife. Who didn't make it to the 2007 winter carnival (something about being pregnant) or the 2008 winter carnival (something about having a baby) but just might be able to make it to the 2009 one (we hope, with a 2 year old in tow).

Change of plans. I don't think I'll be able to make the Blurb Meetup Too much stuff going on that I need to finish this week. David if I do end up going I'll give you a call so we can meet up.
Didn't see anyone I knew at the Blurb event. Eileen was there (Blurb owner/President) and she made a fine presentation and thanked all the artists and judges. About 120 people in attendance. The food, and especially the hors d'oeuvres, were outrageously fabulous. She spent a mint on this party.
Each catagory of book finalists were grouped in settings around the room, with about a half dozen copies each for partygoers to browse through. Most every entry was art in itself, independent of the photographic content within. These books were a study in design, each and every one. I have to say, some of the photography in many of the books wasn't great, but that was only part of why the samples were chosen. And of course, many of them contained the work of top notch photographic artists as well.
Many winning entries did have something in common - the book photographer/owners had hired professional media design experts to help select layout, colors, font choices, and a mood/flair to showcase the artist's work. My head is still spinning after paging through thousands upon thousands of pages and photos. One common design approach was to either make pages go full bleed (photo goes all the way to the edge) or to include a very hefty amount of white space for each shot. Most every page of every book was glossy white background. I don't remember seeing any that were black backgrounds like our shootout books.
We were asked to bring our own blurb books. I only spotted one person showing off her own book to a friend. There were simply too many other stunning sample books to look through to do much else.

I am relatively flexible, but work has been known to send me out of town quite a bit. Once the weather turns warmer, I was thinking of a trip down to Millennium Park could be good as well.
Millenium is nice when it warms up, until then I'm a huge fan of indoor locations! Never been to Garfield. I haven't been to Shedd in a really long time either if anyone wants to take fishy photos.
I'd love to go to Brookfield when it's warmer too on that note, one of my favorite places I think we all got lazy with planning these meet ups since the SMUG's started, but we've yet to go on a photo outing as part of the SMUG's so we're long overdue!
Twin Cities has it's own SMUG now too!
Not sure how many midwestern dgrinners would consider the twin cities area home, or at least close enough to consider a monthly drive over... but the Twin Cities SMUG is up and running: http://www.meetup.com/Twin-Cities-SmugMug-User-Group/
We gave away two free years, plus a free site customization this last month, plus some cool SmugMug schwag. I'm making the 2.5 hour drive up as many months as I can... surely all you folks in the cities already can come on out to the west side.

It looks as though the meetups happen on the third Wednesday of the month, unfortunately I
belong to a nature photo club that meets on those same nights.
I would be very interested in attending a SmugMug meet. I'm pretty new to this site and would just need to know when and where to meet. I live in Morton IL which is between Peoria and Bloomington IL.

Do I count?
That query was from 2007, so if you're asking now I'm afraid you're pretty late.

Can I go if I don't already have a self-made Blurb book? (other than one from a Shootout). Or is this just for Blurbers?

It doesn't say you *have* to bring a book, so you could probably still go.

The SMUG's are still every third Tuesday of the month, I think that's pretty set in stone.
As for other plans? Nope, but we could make some... just very cold and yucky for most outdoor shoots. (can it be spring yet? lol) Any ideas?

Sure is time to really think about a meet up and do something. What's it been, almost 1½ years now?
Garfield Park Conservatory is indoors, and free. That's one possibility.
Unfortunately, I work fridays, saturdays and sundays, so weekends are out for me.
