I've had mine for about a month now and I'd say noise is great up to iso800. VERY controllable. Nite and day from my old backup D70 and could be better than my D2X but I haven't run many side by sides yet. I have noticed that I've taken a few shots that I thought it wouldn't polish off from past experience and it did very well. So far I'm pleased. Other than it's off to Nikon Service for some banding and hot pixels. :)

Oh and the autofocus is much faster than the D70. It hunts ALOT less. Still not as good as the D2X as you might expect but not nite and day anymore either.

Regarding D200 and noise, it's performance seems to be quite good. From a review (that seems objective):

"In its default settings, the D200 performed well beyond expectations in terms of noise suppression -- it produced the third lowest noise scores we have attained behind the Fuji S3 pro and Canon EOS 5D (but not far!) Above is a graph showing the D200’s noise performance at the various sensitivity settings available. As you can see, the chart has a steady, gradual incline, only jumping once it hits its ISO 1250 settings. This is impressive. The camera produced far less noise when NR was increased, but with sacrifices made to detail, color saturation, and color accuracy."

Going through the menus, according to some tutorials I've seen online for the D2x, you'd think you were looking at a D2x if you were just going through the menus. I followed the guide on the Nikonians web site that described auto focus modes and settings on a D2x - and it was the exact same menu and selections on my D200 :) So I guess you could call the D200 the D2x's 'Medium Me'...not Mini Me because it's certainly more than a mini...somewhere closer to medium ;)

Absolutely...I'm really impressed with it. It's a perfect smaller version. I'd say it's better at higher iso at least. For any serious indoor sports shooting I think you're still looking to a D2Hs unfortunately. It's buttery smooth at iso100 tho. For low action outdoor stuff I'd take the lighter D200 over my D2X but that's my 2 cents.

    D200 noise at high ISO
I got my D200 yesterday and it is fantastic! :Diloveyou.gif :photo

I will be shooting an indoor swim meet later today and that should be revealing, since I have done other meets at the same location with my D70.

I took a few unscientific test shots with my D70 and D200 at 800 and 1600 ISO to compare. Big win for the D200. You can check them out here:

And the autofocus is obviously a big leap over the D70 too.

Downside - it will take a loooong time to figure out all the settings / options on the new baby. :help
