The introduction of the EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras was a bold step up in the full-frame mirrorless camera category, and just the beginning of our quest to meet the diverse needs of professionals and serious enthusiast photographers seeking solutions.
To build on their success and leverage advancements in technology that have come along since, Canon Inc. announces the future development of a new class of EOS R camera. Landing between the robust EOS R5 and Canon's flagship EOS-1D X Mark III, the Canon EOS R3 will be designed to satisfy the most demanding expectations in a professional camera --- emphasizing speed, performance, and reliability.
Stacked Sensor
Canon's first full-frame, back-illuminated stacked CMOS image sensor in the EOS R3 will deliver substantially faster read-out speeds, and produce much lower "rolling shutter" distortion than previous EOS models.
Electronic Shutter
Electronic Shutter operation will take full advantage of the EOS R3's sensor design. With its superb read-out speeds, continuous shooting up to 30fps (with RAW images), with full AF, in all auto exposure shooting modes, will be available with the EOS R3. And, Speedlite shooting will be possible with the R3's electronic shutter active.
Autofocus
The EOS R5 and R6 were only the beginning. Using Deep Learning technology, the upcoming EOS R3 will offer enhanced AF performance and tracking capabilities, with even better face-, eye-, head- and body-detection. And now, the EOS R3 will add vehicle subject recognition and tracking, for cars and motorcycles, especially in motorsports environments.
Eye Control AF
For the first time in an EOS R series camera, Eye Control AF will allow users to set the focus point in the viewfinder, by simply looking at it --- for incredibly fast changes in where the camera focuses, or to set the initial point from which the EOS R3's AF system will track moving subjects.*
*During still-image shooting only, through the electronic viewfinder. Eye Control AF may not be possible, depending upon individual characteristics or shooting conditions, and may not be possible for users wearing bifocal eyeglasses, certain types of sunglasses or mirror sunglasses, or certain hard contact lenses.
Rugged Body
Canon's upcoming EOS R3 will feature a solid yet lightweight magnesium alloy body and carry forward the integrated vertical grip similar to the 1D series cameras, emphasizing both horizontal and vertical handling for challenging shooting situations. Weather-resistance and durability will equal Canon's top-of-the-line EOS-1D X Mark III camera. Power will be delivered by the same Canon LP-E19 battery pack that powers the EOS-1D X Mark III. And, the EOS R3 will have three primary input dials, giving familiar operation to current Canon EOS users.
Low-light Performance
Able to autofocus in light as low as EV -7 or more**, along with up to 8 stops*** of Coordinated IS control when used with RF lenses featuring Optical Image Stabilization, the EOS R3 will deliver amazing performance even in remarkably dark areas.
**Still photos, with an f/1.2 lens except RF lenses with a Defocus Smoothing (DS) coating, center AF point, and One-Shot AF, at room temperature and ISO 100.
***Using RF24-105mm F4 L IS USM, in yaw and pitch directions, with f=105mm, and as based on CIPA standards.
Video Flexibility
With the EOS R3, you will be able to shoot in high-quality 4K with Canon Log3 and oversampled 4K, and RAW movie internal recording. AF tracking for people, animals and motorsports will be possible while recording video as well.
Network Capabilities
To assist with your professional or personal photo and video endeavors, the EOS R3 will have Wired LAN and 5GHz Wi-Fi4 (11ac equivalent) built-in so you have the flexibility of wired or wireless connections and the necessary support for high-speed image transfer.
4Supports 5GHz Wi-Fi-compatible models only. Specifications may vary depending on country and region
Designed to Deliver
The EOS R3 will feature a multi controller to help you easily select the AF point, quickly change Menu settings, and more. And, the R3 will also be equipped with a smart controller---similar to that on the EOS-1D X Mark III ---that lets you quickly shift AF point locations, or a starting point for Servo AF tracking. A Vari-angle LCD will make it easy to compose shots at virtually any angle, and will be touchscreen to enable you to access menus, change settings and more on the fly. And a new accessory shoe will provide options for data communication and power, supporting new accessories.
Comments
Still no word on the sensor resolution? They keep touting 30 fps, but we have no idea how many pixels in a frame. Rumor has it that this body will be in the $4500 range, between the R5 and the eventual R1 which will replace the 1DXIII. So if it's the 45MP sensor of the R5 then it seems it would obsolete the R5 which is almost as much.

Canon said, "... the Canon EOS R3 will be designed to satisfy the most demanding expectations in a professional camera --- emphasizing speed, performance, and reliability." It doesn't sound like high resolution is a primary goal for this body.
The R3's competition is:
Probably anything in the 20-ish megapixels could satisfy most professionals shooting for publications and news applications.
The Canon EOS R1's competition is:
I'm betting that Canon's R1 response will be similarly very high megapixels and a little slower than the R3, perhaps with an optional crop mode of around 30 megapixels and very high frame rates. That features combination could satisfy a broad range of interests in a single body, albeit a very expensive body. (Remember when the EOS 1Ds Mark III sold for ~$8,000USD in 2008? Not that expensive for the R1.)

Again, this is a preproduction body and no new information, but nice to see the body (formfactor and layout) very close to how it will probably ship.

PetaPixel has been following the EOS R3 rollout and they have correlated data from CanonRumors and professional photographer, Jeff Cable.
PetaPixel (PP) also claims to have gotten Jeff on the phone for a brief discussion about the apparent CanonRumors revelation of 6,000 pixels by 4,000 pixels for the Canon EOS R3.
Below is the link to the PP article and I'll include a couple of brief excerpts from the article, but go to the article for more information and supporting images:

The EOS R3 may have a weak anti-aliasing or lowpass filter, or it may not have one at all (... or it could be using a low-pass filter* (LPF) effect cancellation, similar to the Canon EOS 5DS-R.)

B&H is now reporting that shipments of the R3 will begin on Friday November 26th. So just a couple more months to wait....
My experience with the R5 has been very satisfactory with file quality, and AF speed and accuracy, mostly for birds. The R3 AF is reported to be even better. Wahoo!! It will be interesting to compare the 24 MPxl R3 files to the 45 MPxl R5 files.
My R5 with the RF 100->500 f4.5->7.1 IS USM lens produces razor sharp images if I do my part. I have been waiting to decide whether to replace my 1DX Mk II with the 1DX Mk III or the R3, and I am very strongly leaning to the R3 due to my results with my R5. And I have loved my 1DX Mk II.

Any comment about the Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, and speed and accuracy of the Dual Nano USM AF system of the R5, especially at the long end?
Moderator of the Cameras and Accessories forums
I'm in the process of editing images from a week of shooting birds in south Texas - I will put up a gallery within the week. I spent 4 days in a blind shooting with an R5 and a RF 100-500 and a 1DX Mk II and an EOS 200-400 with built in TC for comparison. Both systems worked superbly.
Suffice it to say, that the AF system seems better than my 1Dx Mk II which is saying something, especially with 45 Mpxl files.
Moderator of the Technique Forum and Finishing School on Dgrin
If my figures are correct,
The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II
@2.95 lb
... plus Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x
@7.98 lb
=~11lbs total
The Canon EOS R5
@26.03 oz
... plus Canon RF 100-500mm F4. 5-7.1 L IS USM
@3.01 lb
=~4.6 lbs total
The Canon EOS R3 is claimed to weigh 2.2 lb, so adding an RF 100-500mm should still be a respectably light 5.2 lbs total, and noticeably lighter than the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x lens alone.
Impressive, to say the least!

The following are a few excerpts [emphasis mine] from this link: https://dxomark.com/canon-eos-r3-sensor-review-best-low-light-performer/ Please do read the entire article at the link to gain a better perspective of the DXOMark tests and results for the Canon EOS R3 Mirrorless camera.
Canon EOS R3 Sensor review: Best low light performer
Posted on December 3, 2021 by Kevin Carter, tested by DXOMARK Sensor Team
Overall performance
The Canon EOS R3 achieved a high DXOMARK sensor score of 96, which puts it ahead in image quality of any previous Canon sensor in our rankings, even in advance of the EOS R5's 45 MP sensor, albeit by just a tiny fraction (95). Image quality from the Canon EOS R3 is also ahead of its closest market rival, the 24 MP Sony A9II at 93 points in our sensor 'ranking'.
It has excellent maximum color depth measured at 25 bits at native base and just short of 15 stops (14.7 EV) of dynamic range. The new 'stacked' CMOS sensor also compares exceptionally well in the low-light ISO (Sports) category; a computed figure that's based on certain thresholds for color depth, dynamic range and noise levels. Indeed, with a extrapolated figure of ISO 4086 the new Canon sensor ranks in first place for all full-frame models, which is just ahead (+0.13 EV) of the next best, the Sony A7 II at ISO 3730, and ahead of the Sony A9 II at ISO 3434.
Sports (low-light ISO)
The Canon EOS R3 is the best full-frame low light performer we've seen to date with output at 30dB (where we compute ISO with both a minimum 18-bit color and 9 stop DR) more than +0.3 EV cleaner than the Sony A1 (4086 ISO vs 3163 ISO) and the Canon EOS-1DX Mark III (4086 ISO vs 3248 ISO).
In cameras with full-frame sensors it is the Sony A7 III that comes closest, where it's just -0.13 Ev behind the EOS R3. Even the best sensor in our database with the lowest noise capable of meeting the our low-light criteria; the cropped (44 x 33mm) medium format 50 MP CMOS in the Pentax 645Z, is just slightly better (+0.14 Ev) than the EOS R3.
