Visitors to my PAID photo site are apparently being shown an invitation to join SmugMug. This is completely inappropriate. Is there a way to stop it?

I've not seen any such message when viewing my site logged out (i.e. incognito mode). Even tried it through VPN in a few different regions and nothing popped up other than the cookies banner.

Are you using the "share photos privately" option? If you are, the people you invite are asked to sign up for a free guest account in order to view your photos.
From the help page at https://www.smugmughelp.com/en/articles/407-share-photos-privately-with-only-people-i-choose:
If you don't want your users to need to sign in but you want to keep the gallery (sort of) private you can use an unlisted gallery. You will need to send your viewers a direct link to the gallery. See the help page at https://www.smugmughelp.com/en/articles/339-gallery-page-and-folder-privacy-settings.
