Broke free of Andy's customisation shackles this weekend :D

I got the chance to head down to Lorne for the weekend and a chance to give my new graduated neutral density filters a good run. Here's a few of the shots that I have processed so far.

Comments and criticism most welcome..

    Hi there David,

:jawdrop There are outstanding. What were the Neutral density filters you were using? I am looking at the Cokin system as my filter sizes vary.

Look forward to seeing some more.

    Hey AJ,

Thanks man, I am really loving my 20D and starting to really get the hang of it :D

Plus the investment in some good quality GND filters was well worth it.

    nburwell,

    Thanks :D

Typically I think I suck at composition, but after looking at loads of great photography, i am hoping that some might be rubbing off.

Just get out there and have fun thumb.gif

    Hey Dave,

Firstly, thanks for the comments rolleyes1.gif
To be honest, i surprised myself.

Sorry I should have detailed the filter info in the original post. I used the following...

    - Singh-Ray 3-stop graduated ND filter
    - Singh-Ray 3-stop reverse graduated ND filter
    - B&W 10-stop ND filter

I am using the Lee Foundation system with a 77mm adapter ring.

The stuffs not cheap, but I am pretty happy with the results. I still think it's going to take a bit of time to get use to them.

    Cheers,

    Hey Greg,

Thanks man. I am totally digging my new filters. I have linked the EXIF data to each photo (click). The first two shots were taken around 6:30am and the second just before 8:00am.

That sucks about the exhibition !! Was just reading your other thread. I am glad that Joes Garage came to the party.

    Great, but tell me something...
    Hey David,

Unreal photos, was just wondering how you went about setting the exposure times. Did you use a light meter and assess the exposure time from that or the onboard meter.

The reason I ask is with exposures over 30sec (on my 350d) I have to guess beacuse Im using bulb. I think I might be missing something??? This is probably something stupid but if I dont ask Ill kick myself later.

Again, great set of photos. They give the coastline fantastic atmosphere.

    Cheers, Nigel

    Hey Nigel,

    Thanks for the comments :D

I don't have a light-meter. I typically take a few test shots and look at the results in the histogram and then adjust accordingly. For sunrise/sunsets where time is important, it's probably not the best method. But at this stage, that's what I have to live with.

    Hope this helps,

    I guess I'm just contrary
Contrary to most posted opinions, I really like the second and last photos.

The second one, IMO, uses the sand/rocks as a nice lead into the distant portion of the image. The colors are killer as well.

For the last photo, I love the sense of dark and gloom, relieved by the sun appearing from behind the clouds on the right. A mix of doom & gloom and hope. Very nice.

    hi david

once i go wide i will invest in some of those grad nd filters

That sucks about the exhibition !! Was just reading your other thread. I am glad that Joes Garage came to the party.

Yes thanks -now that they are up on the wall i dont like some of them and some will come down and some others are in at the lab to replace them.

By the way,i noticed in your EXIF data that you have your camera set to sRGB-for printing purposes it is better to set it at Adobe RGB.

Make sure your printer is set up for high quality as well.

The composition and colours are fanatstic.

Did the photos require much photoshop work to balance the exposure of the sky and the ground, or did the filters take care of that?

    Hi Chris,

Good to see you here dude. Thanks so much, I am pretty thrilled with the result, even thought I reckon I could do better next time.

The filters took care of it pretty well, the PS work I did was more too handle the exposures that may not have been exposed as well as they could be if I had used a light meter or was a bit more experienced.

Awesome pics, I've been waiting for the right time to try to get something similar to the first one - a silky effect over (in my case) moonlit pebbles. Those colours are amazing and bring the shot to life. Great long exposure! thumb.gif

I was looking into some of these filters. There is one that is worth about $400 & works like a CP out to 32 from memory. Just pu tthe one on & go from there...not sure how it works exactly...i saw it on the net a while back & now i cant find it again.

I couldn't pick a favorite. The colors really grab you in the first two, but the subtlety of the colors in the third along with the composition are just as powerful. thumb.gifthumb.gif

    Hi Scott,

    Thanks for your comments.

I am big fan of B&W photography, particularily high contrast/key stuff, so next to the first image, my favourite is the last one.
