Friday morning, sitting in my back yard and getting ready for my morning swim when I saw a bird fly in the stream behing my pool. The bird was different from the ysyal birds we get so I got up to take a look.

After I got a look at our visitor I went back into the house and grabbed my camera. My visitor was......

a flipping night heron

64628641-O.jpg

for close to two years I haven't been able to get a really close up shots of a night heron and here's this sucker posing right outside my house

64628640-O.jpg

64628636-O.jpg

eventually he took off and I wnet back to my now cold coffee :cry

64628633-O.jpg

I noticed that he flew a short ways down the stream to two other night herons. Maybe my night heron drought is over. :clap

Nice shots, Harry. Night Heron means nothing to me, but anything you've waited 2 years for must be special. Those eyes are amazing. The BIF shot is nice.

Great backyard catch harry. I am tring to find a wav of their call. There are several just beside me here on the river that i see in the late afternoon & every morning about 4am some birds start screaming...each gives a call & then the other takes it an octave higher & 20 db louder. I dont know what is doing it & suspect the night heron. Hell of an alarm clock.

    Way to go, Harry!!!!!!!!
First....... you have to tell us what KIND of coffee you were drinking?
Maybe, just maybe it will work for me (us) because I have yet to find ONE stinking night heron pose for me!! They are very shy and, the moment they
feel they are being tracked (by my camera) or as soon as I take one step forward (or sideways! lol)..... they're gone!

    So......
hats off to Harry who has quickly become a near expert at Florida bird species.

    Best regards,

That egret or his relatives are still regular visitors. We get herons, sandhill cranes, wood storks, ducks and ibis regularly also and every once in a while a limpkin.

I have adopted a policy of not shooting the birds that land in my back yard area. Its just too easy. I made an exception for the night herons.
