The larger size made a big difference. A very fine shot, but in the spirit of the this theme, I still want more context. Is he a stand up comedian? A singer? How would I know? Where is he?
    If not now, when?

Thanks. I kind of thought without the band somewhere in the photo it did not tell enough about him.

    Pedicure
This has context, but is it a portrait if she isn't looking at me and smiling?

I would crop it down from the top and from the left. If a shot does not isolate an individual I tend to think of it as a 'people scene' more than a portrait. And, if it is just her profile, I still think it is a portrait. What else would it be? Check the first example in the active challenge thread (also a profile, with the challenge qualifying material as the "focus").

As for the shot itself, it looks a little cold... I would consider adding magenta/red. Also, the objects on the table immediately in front of her face are distracting and should probably be cloned away. The rest of the "clutter" I think creates context.

Thanks for the very helpful critique. I'm going to give those tips a try and see what I come up with. When I took it, I thought of it as a people shot, kind of a "street" shot. But, I also wanted a good shot of her. Thanks for the input.

    The waiter
Here's one that has the right subject matter, but fails misserably as a photo.
I post it only as an idea for subject matter.
I was sitting at the counter in this San Francisco restaurant and wanted to take the shot without drawing attention to myself, so I didn't use a flash. The waiters move around quickly and the shot did not present itself again. It was very dark and lightening it made it grainy so I added grain. It's also quite soft. A flash at that close range probably would have been too bright anyway. I only have the onboard flash to work with. - Anyway, I'd try to find something like this for this challenge.
If you can offer any suggestions for saving the photo or for how to shoot it in the future, I would be very grateful.

Edit note: I cropped this to eliminate one overhead light and cloned out the other one. With a little more lightening, it improved a bit. I substituted the revised photo because I didn't want to post too many. Both versions are here:

Would these be what is meant by a conceptual portrait?
or would it fit? It is NOT eligible, taken a few months ago. But my priest shot not only has his "costume" in it, it has the Easter, Baptismal Candle, to place it.

I was thinking that this might have been good if it were "new".

I don't know how to make the picture tiny in my reply. ne_nau.gif

But, I think this is great for showing context. He is wearing a wet suit and is that a parasail behind him? Yes, it would have made a good entry. thumb.gif

    Hi Dave

I really like the welder pic - it seems to have everything in it for the challenge even though we don;t get to see his face and the B&W really give it that bit extra..

I was going to submit this one for the contest but I didn't like the background elements near her head. It was shot on May 6th.

What Nicola said! I love the juxtaposition of the expressions on the faces of the young man and the older man behind him.
