That winking guy asked me like 6 times for my smugmug account - all I wanted to know was "when will the statistics be back"

I don't want anything except what I paid for - I don't want any more insults, come ons, slurs, winks, or innuendos

I just want to know when the site will be working again

please - can't someone answer that without attacking me or rummaging through my photos?

No one has insulted you, come on to you, slurred you or made any innuendos. Yes, we have winked, but that's fairly common internet parlance here, emoticons are not that strange.

I can appreciate that you want the feature to work. Andy is your ally, he's just trying to help. He works for smugmug, and has told you that in order to help he needs your nickname. He's not looking to rummage through your private images, it just gives him access to your account so he can provide you with some help.

For my money, either take the help, or move on.

I have learned a lot about shooting digi. on this site and a lot of helpful people from around the world commenting on each others photos and the smugmug STAFF are involved in providing this form for every one. I just thought you wre not giving Andy the respect he deserves.

wow.

i have never seen somebody so stupidly, and rudely, rejecting offers of help from someone who was obviously an employee of smugmug - not to mention said it straight up early on enough.

i can understand why somebody would be a bit peeved at the situation with the stats, i am too, and i just joined, what a welcome - it seems the problem should not have occured or been fixed after last years tennis fiasco - but there are certain things called manners - especially with a company that has such quick and open communication with its customers. not to mention the nicest layout and features of a photo sharing site i have seen.

it could be just a massive ego with this constant talk about how the smugmug help staff is just obsessed with seeing their photos, or it could just be a shoddy upbringing.

obviously if someone is going to remedy the fact that your standard account does not have certain features that would allow one to use alternative methods to get stats - they were going to change that, very likely by upgrading the account.

i'll take the upgrade instead :D

I think that we should sit back and think about this from the another point of view.

A smugmug user has paid for a gallery, like us, to host his photos.
It isnt his fault he is so popular. But at the same time, smugmug is trying to honor his services, and everyone elses, dont forget, he has lost his stats as well.

This is a very hard situation to deal with, at the same time fix the problem. But at least we all have our service still. If this were to happen to anyone of us, would we want our site shut down?

I have not had my gallery for very long, but I do know this,

Smugmug cares and didnt want this to happen. I cant imagine how tired and worn out they must be, let alone how frustrated they are.
They have an outstanding reputation for making their customers happy and help out in any way they can when we have a situation.
I dont know of any other service where you can go to their forum and get close to instant help from employees who us their own time and knowledge to help others when they have a problem.

I just want to say Thankyou to everyone who has helped me for the last 4 months.
I appreciate what Smugmug and everyone is this forum has done for me.

I agree Pam, however; I think with the problem that happened a year ago, something should have been done to prepare for this type of situation that was bound to happen again.ne_nau.gif

I do like SmugMug and those who are always ready to help when I email them. I hope this time, upgrades or whatever needs to be done will be accomplished to insure this doesn't happen again.

I realize that this is an unexpected problem, and I appreciate both the feedback as well the effort that is going into resolving this issue.

With that said, I do hope the end result of this is a system that was at least as good as what we expected when we signed on to SMUGMUG with Pro accounts.

Like many others, the only way of knowing if you got to the right people is timely and accurate statistics. The only way for me to know who to concetrate on in the next event is to know what group of riders or drivers is interested in photographs.

Having the system "dumbed" down to accomidate 1 photographer is not acceptable to me, even if that photographer were myself. If I was generating that much traffic, I should be able to afford my own site and upkeep.

I am very pissed off over this - make no mistake. That said, why is one ("Acerbica" - sorry, lame "humor" stemming from frustration) being so rude to Andy - who IMHO is being as patient and reasonable as one could expect from someone in customer service. We can be annoyed, but rudeness is not warranted. Each of us is free to go elsewhere - I am holding on a bit longer.

I do note that for some of us, our postings are not just a fun thing, but a business. Critical data is being lost and this is not a good thing.

C'mon Mugs - get it togeher!

Hmmm. I too am waiting a LITTLE longer. Then its back to printroom.com I guess. I signed up to get these numbers, not such a great deal I can't get at least a close to real time update.

just add the statcounter... Free to keep track of the last 100 hits, small charge otherwise. The "visitor paths" link is the one I use all the time. Much more info than just "which pictures were looked at" I've had it for months and I have not looked at smugmug's stats since. And it is working right now.

I would like to comment on this issue.

I do NOT work for SM and have only been here a short while. I have spent time in my life analyzing web logs to justify our work for grants and see who is using our services. Understand also that this is not a defence of SM, they screwed up BIG TIME! They are aware of the problem and I am confident they are working to fix it.

Would you be mad at SM if they lost all of your photos, perhaps your whole site? I certainly would and you probably would too. It would be a serious pain.
But you wouldn't lose any sleep over it because you have all the original photos backed up in multiple secure locations, right....? You have all your site customizations (CSS and JavaScript) backed up on your local computer, right...?
In the time it takes to upload the photos to SM (won't go there right now) your site could be functional again. If you needed to use another service, again no problem, in a few hours you could be up and fully functional again.

I would assume as that many of you, especially those with domains, have other services ready (or at least evaluated) so if SM goes down again you can swap and point your customers to that site in an instant.

When one shoots a wedding, do you take only one camera and one card? No, one should take multiple cameras, multiple cards, multiple batteries, and multiple of whatever else one may need to insure the shoot is done properly.

I say all this to say that ANYTHING you consider to be critical to your business should have multiple backups and multiple plans in case something fails.

If you require site statistics for your business you should have a backup already in place and running. If you don't, consider this your wake up call! Get another stat analysis tool in place ASAP. When SM gets their stats working again, keep that other counter and its information running. Those other tools may not be as good as SM stats but at least they can tell you something about your site.

There are many tools available to power and pro users to easily add additional stat functionality to your pages. What only takes minutes to add to your page can save you a lot of pain in the future.

Disappointing...
Hi,

What is so disappointing about this episode is that it has been 10 days and no resolution is in sight. Is it really that hard to isolate traffic to the single user and disable stats for him/her? The first thing that comes to mind is to redirect the user's site (username.smugmug.com?) to another server that serves pictures as usual but doesn't update the stats database.

Depending on SM's infrastructure, the above may or may not work, but my point is that it really doesn't inspire confidence in SM to have left a localized problem unresolved for so long. It is doubly damning since something similar happened a year ago.

My 2¢ : Maybe Rafael Nadal (if he's listening) could be a mensch and close his galleries to the public while he's busy playing tennis? <hint hint> <img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/mwink.gif" border="0" alt="" >

I doubt if Rafael Nadal is the problem. I mean, no company would let one customer disrupt the service to ALL their other customers-would they? There must be some other problem that they haven't worked out yet.

Now I just hope that there aren't any World Cup Soccer,er um, football player/teams as Smugmug customers.

Are you sure about this? According to the info at the "Home" link on "his" smugmug site:

VamosRafael.com is Rafa's first website, designed by Rafa fans for his fans. Established in June 2003, VR.com was Rafa's only acknowledged website until late 2005. VR.com saw Rafa through his first 12 titles, his first Davis Cup and his first slam title at Roland Garros in 2005. We are a non-profit, unofficial fan site with no connection to Rafa or his management.

I'm also pretty curious about all of the images that are even keyworded as CBS Sportsline... are these copyrighted images all being purchased by this fan club?

I'd like to add this: Yes, statistics are fun for some, important for others; however, the truly important thing is that your photos Are Being Seen and you're Open For Business. We all know that the Muggers are doing their very best to stem the bleeding, and I think you are all -- even the so-called supporters -- being Very Rude. Only a couple of these preceding comments were without a jab/stab/barb to SM staff. These guys and gals are running a great company with outstanding customer service, and I trust that If this problem could have been fixed 10 days ago, it would have been.

Please -- what other company would allow you to post insults on Their website??? I wouldn't blame them if they invited you all to go elsewhere. It's too bad the squeaky wheels are the only ones logging on... How about some feedback, sans the negative remarks, from some loyal SMuggers.thumb.gif

P.S. Glad to see "Acerbica" has called it a day. It must be draining to be such a sarcastic b.....:uhoh

Uh, if you don't want people to rummage through your photos, then why host them on the Internet?

And yeah, yeah, I know you have a password, but if you think that's secure, then you have larger problems than your piss poor attitude. And this is coming from a guy who often also has a piss poor attitude, so I should know.

Well, whether this is actually Rafael Nadal or some roaming band of photo thieves screwing up the site, the whole situation seems a bit ridiculous. imagine:
a small, 30-seat restaurant offers an all-you-can buffet every friday night. the restaurant offers great service and has a loyal clientele. one friday night, 4 world-champion eaters descend on the restaurant as a warm-up for their eating competition in a few days. they start destroying the buffet, and desperate not to cause a scene (because after all, these are world champion eaters and this has to be great publicity for the restaurant), management orders the cooks start churning out sub-quality food (extra slow photo views) and the waiters stop re-filling drinks (no stats) because they are too busy carting food out to the buffet. eventually, the world-champion eaters leave, but the other customers are angry, and a few never come back.

the restaurant survives, but exactly one year later, it's friday night buffet, the eating competition is in town again, and low and behold, here come the world champs in the door again. you are the restaurant manager. what do you do? a.) offer to seat the champs and screw the rest of your customers or b.) say "hey champs, if you call in advance and we'd be happy set up a special buffet for you in our banquet room next door. but i can't seat you right now. After all, my other customers had no idea you guys were coming in to gorge tonight....."
i know it's great publicity for smugmug, but let's be honest: rafael has enough cash to set up his own website (or the in the photo-thief/fan-club scenario, they can pony up for their own web site). all that being said, smugmug, i've been very happy with you so far, but get your heads on straight for this one.......

Just want to point out that aside from Andy the rest of us have nothing to do with smugmug, we only moderate here as a volunteer service. I understand your frustration, but as Mods we can do not a thing about it. So we keep to what we know, which is running this forum. Hope that helps!

Well this for sure solved the counter problem and now you can add "no partial bad language also to the rules" regardless of not hearing the real frustration of the "what we pay for" as out at over 336 hours.

Thanks for putting me in a position to not just paying my yearly and uploading pictures to being p off.
