My Veh Dyn textbook is in storage, and I'm a bit rusty, but I'm pretty sure I disagree that it will "counter" itself that nicely. My thinking is you will feel the understeer effects and not get much back from your rake change.
Yes, less grip up front will increase understeer.
Yes, increased rake induce oversteer.
But, for the fraction of an inch change in diameter, you're going to see very little change in rake. Well, depending on the geometry, with which I'm totally unfamiliar. Also, and more importantly, such a slight change would really only be noticeable at very high loads, such as on an autoX, where you would be heavily loading the front of the car, thus seeing geometry effects of rake and toe-in (or any other bump steer effects).
In other words, if you already have a good neutral feel, and an accurate speedo, I wouldn't F with it.
And I know nothing about specific tires, sorry. Been out of that game for a long time.
Hmmm, I see. Ok, so no staggered setup.
What do you think about the improvements from going to 245/45 from 245/50? I figure a slight increase in acceleration and a slight increase in sidewall stiffness, but is it so slight that it doesn't matter and I should ignore that 3 of the tires can be had in 245/45 while the rest only come in 245/50 (note that both sizes leave me with an accurate speedo)?
Hankook Ventus RS-2 in 245/45-16
Fuzion ZRi in 245/45-16
Yokohama ES100 in 245/45-16
the following are all 245/50-16
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3
Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval
Kelly Fierce UHP
Cooper Zeon XS2
Bridgestone RE960AS
Which car? And what do you want with regard to cost & wear?
I have run Bridgestone and Yokohama tires in the past and been pretty happy. I don't know about Hankook. I have long stayed away from Goodyear/Firestone.
As far as size, no additional suggestions except to say it's probably not going to matter as much as you'd like it to.

Cooper dealer said he couldn't in good conscience sell me the Coopers. I didn't look into it but I figure the Kelly is not going to be any better.
The Goodyear is the best tire in the list I think, but the Toyo is available in 245/45-16 and is 5lbs/tire lighter in 245/45 than the Goodyear in 245/50-16.
I had a break down at 10,500 feet above sea level. I think thats one of the highest breakdowns by an automobile.
But luckily before that I had taken lots of pics

Cost, wear, bah humbug!
I'm actually thinking I may go with the Toyo T1R.

Although, that's one that would be much better served by a soundtrack.
