When you guys get started on layer styles let me know. I've gotten pretty good at those.
We will, I promise ..:-)
In the mean time - by any chance you wanna play and help us with "dodge and burn"?
We have only 4 these simple modes left. :cry
The thing is - we're NOT moving to Styles until we got all the blending Modes covered..

Yeah, sure I'll see if I can pull up some info on color and linear dodge and burn.
Y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance.
Mike, thanks for the point! I'll check it out at the local bookstore.
For some reason I have a hunch that it's gonna be very 101-ish, although my hunch can be 100% wrong, and it's Dan Margulis' level
Well, I did. The book was right on the same shelf where a few more dozens of PS-related book were waiting.
It's a large format and printed nicely, with the super and all.
Book is essentially split in two parts.
First part talks about blending modes per se (including some introductory pages about layers, blending, masking, etc.)
Second one is filled with specific "recipes" (I still don't know it there was 49 or 50:-).
As I suspected beforehand, the book is mostly suited for the novice retouchers. Some sample effects were nice, but nothing held me me longer than a few seconds to see how this or that effect was or could have been achieved (I mean without looking into the actual "recipe" itself). I was done with the whole book in less than 15 minutes, maybe even less than 10.
All in all, if you're dying to know what all those modes do, don't want to wait until the end of October or explore the subject yourself, and have a spare $20 - I'd say it's a solid purchase. I can be also a nice gift for someone who is just starting his/her travel in the land of layer blending.
I personally would wait for the gang to finish up their shares:-)
PS
A funny thing with that book was that the pictures of American Southwest, like Thor Hammer (Bryce Canyon, UT) and Horseshoe Bend (Page, AZ) were so close to ones I took during this May that I even had a deja vu for a couple of seconds, like, "who's writing this book again?" :-)
Exclusion in graph form...
From what I can tell, the values go from 0 to 1 in all those equations. Here is what exclusion looks like in graph form. All axes go from 0 to 1 and z is pointing up, x is closest to the viewer, and y is going back away from the viewer. Fascinating.

Yeah, I found and quoted similar graph.
This exclusion is a hard one. I tried to give it justice but it still feels that I only scratched the surface...

The graph says it all If the source has 100% of the value of one color and the blend has 0% then the result will have 100% and vice versa - so white on black or black on white should be white. If they both have 0% or they both have 100% then the result will be 0% - so white on white should be black. If they both have 50% then the result is 50% so gray on gray is gray.

Since these two modes have some things in common
I covered both in one:
