We can finally talk about it! Together, Adobe and SmugMug have integrated sharing into Photoshop Elements 5 - and it rocks.

The press release.

The help section.

Adobe Uploading Help Page

It should be hitting store shelves soon, so grab a copy or an upgrade and go to town.

That's quite a marketing coup for Smugmug and a great feature for those who use PSE. Congratulations.

Any plans to do anything for those of us who have graduated beyond PSE? I'm now using CS2 and Bridge and will probably use Lightroom when it's done.

Wow Don. Just, wow. The industry megagiant recognizing and promoting Smugmug? Wow. That's an incredible shot in the arm, but leads me to worry. Are million dollar condos going to be springing up in our little Smugmug town? Hope you're ready for some more OT! :) Congrats.

Imagine how we felt when we got the call from them! They just really liked how photos looked in SmugMug galleries and everything fell together so naturally.

They're even placing a printed booklet inside the box.

Rats! Smugmug in bed with Adobe. I was afraid of that, and I predicted it here a couple weeks ago.

I smell the buyout coming. By January, SmugAdobe "upgrades" will be $169 and come every 18 months. These great support forums will be replaced by FAQs, and Knowledgebases.

Andy's site will have nothing but pictures of guys sitting on a beach sipping from drinks that have little umbrellas.

I actually recorded it normally. It makes it look a little jerky for the transition, based on the way it records and displays, but I hit the button and up popped my galleries with them processed!

This nice demo of yours definitely does not look like production API we're only allowed to use...ne_nau.gif
Is this integration for Adobe only, or us independent developers can get ahold of that special API/protocol, too? headscratch.gif
    Thanks!

Don't worry Nikolai, I'll still use StarExplorer, and continue to recommend it to all my friends. :D At least until they come out with a version of Adobe PSE5 that I can use from my flash key.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

So, from the PSE5 they jumped to SM website, created a gallery, somehow returned the ID of this gallery back to PSE5 and initiated the upload.

I can understand the selection of the files and the nice progress bar, but what production API let them return an ID of a freshly created (on the SM website!) gallery back to PSE5? headscratch.gif Am I missing something? ne_nau.gif

As a beta test for PSE5, can I report bugs or feature requests here?

The first time I tried to upload pictures, I had chosen a raw file (easy to do if you don't have filenames turned on when viewing thumbnails). Smugmug gladly spent a bunch of time uploading the file and then presented me with an empty gallery. My upload log stated that the file was rejected because it was the wrong file type.

This is obviously user error, but it would be nice if smugmug checked for the correct extension before uploading.

    That is wonderful!clap.gif

Are other versions of adobe photoshop going to work the same way?
If not, does PSE5, allow user to do channel mixing?
    Thankyou

Nice! Will it support automatic photo rotation based on orientation metadata? I don't manually rotate all my photos because PSE displays them correctly using the orientation metadata. I used to find it frustrating to have to manually rotate photos on smugmug (even in bulk mode) after exporting from PSE and uploading. I just finished tweaking Sendtosmugmug so that it auto rotates before it uploads. I'd happily switch to the new feature that will be built into PSE, but only if I don't have to go back to manually rotating photos mwink.gif

This is a GOOD path to go down. Personally I don't use Elements, but if uploading from Adobe Bridge comes next, I will be absolutely ecstatic.

Update: I thought I'd bump this topic up and mention that while originally I could not upload photos from my Adobe Bridge browser, Now all of a sudden I can! I am absolutely elated about this. It is so handy to not have to leave Bridge when it comes time for me to drag-and-drop upload!

[EDIT] Okay, it worked once (seriously, it did!) but now it's just saying "processing image" for way to long on these others I've uploaded. The funny thing is, it brings up the java dialog box that says it's uploading, and it seems to upload the file perfectly fine. Any ideas, SmugMug?

[EDIT 2] Or maybe SmugMug is just taking a while tonight. I've got "processing image" for everything I upload now, even from Windows explorer...

I bet the "processing image" issue is a Smugmug-side problem (heavy traffic taking it's time getting through the processors). If you're getting those thumbnails, you're pictures have at least been uploaded, so the upload process worked.

For what it's worth, I upload from Bridge, using drag and drop, to the Java uploader all the time, and it has never failed. That's typically uploading 30-50, 1.2 MB files.

Oh, well. I just tried the upload from PSE 5.0 and it didn't do rotation correctly. Photos that display as rotated correctly in PSE 5.0 (due to proper Exif orientation info) do not appear rotated when uploaded with the integrated uploader. Since smugmug does not look at the orientation flag in the photo itself, I was hoping that maybe PSE would pre-roate them when it was "preparing images", but it appears not to.

I like the other new features of PSE 5.0, but I, unfortunatly, won't be using the smugmug integration because I don't have the time nor patience to manually rotate my photos after upload. I'll stick with my tweaked version of sendtosmugmug for now.

    Bulk Image Geo-coding
One more "smugmug + adobe = match made in heaven" pitch...

PSE 5 has a geo-coding feature! (PSE 4 might have had this feature too, don't know, I'm upgrading from PSE 3).

In the photo organizer, just click on the globe link, you get a yahoo map, find the spot where the pic was taken and drag the photo or photos on to that spot on the map and upload it to smugmug. Your pics are ready to view on http://maps.smugmug.com/!

This is fantastic!!! My plea for the future to Adobe... PLEASE incorporate an "Export to Smugmug" function in the production release of Lightroom! I would pay $50 more for the software if it did.
