Of course I love the turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy all that. Who wouldn't? But I have two favorite side dishes that my dear wife makes that I just love: braised brussels sprouts, with bits of smoked bacon, and mashed turnips. :eat :food

So, what are your favorite Thanksgiving eats? Those outside of the U.S., don't feel left out - savor the savory goodness of this thread - it's calorie-free!

Desserts could be a whole separate thread, eh lol3.gif

My DW makes an un-believable caramel-cheesecake, topped with bits of heath bars. wings.gif

Of course, can't go wrong with real pumpkin pie, either. Topped with some freshly-made vanilla ice cream.

Devils on Horseback Had to look that one up. Hum, would like to try some.

I don't have a favorite and love the whole meal. I like fixing Thanksgiving myself and don't enjoy going to someone else's house for the big meal. I make a traditional feast with all the standards. We have two or three pies, pumpkin, pecan and apple always vanilla ice cream not whipped cream.

I hope all of you have a safe, loving holiday with family and friends. I have a lot to be thankful for and prayers to those in need.

Prunes wrapped in bacon? :yikes :eek1

    24 Prunes
    12 rashers Streaky Bacon
    12 small slices Toast
    50g (2oz) Mango Chutney
    Butter
    1 bunch Watercress

    Pre-heat oven to 200°C: 400°F: Gas 6
Soak the prunes in boiling water or tea for at least 30 minutes, then remove the stones.
Stuff each prune with ½ tsp mango chutney.
De-rind and stretch the bacon with the back of a knife to prevent it shrinking, cut each rasher in half.
Wrap a piece of bacon round each prune.
    Place on a baking tray.
Keep them packed up tight so that they don't come apart (alternatively pierce with a cocktail stick to prevent this).
    Bake for about 8 minutes.
    Butter the toast.
Arrange 2 devils on each piece and garnish the dish with the watercress.
    Sid.

OK, so I get it now. It's about a double standard. What's OK for Andy is not OK for me.

I love the basic Thanksgiving fare - but w/ final exams and all the end of the term grading, I've been heading out to my in-laws the last 10 years. While that's not bad, I miss planning the menu and, most of all, the left overs.

But, back to the original question - how many have heard Susan Stamburg of NPR give her rendition of "Mama Stamburg's cranberry relish"? My MIL makes it every year and it is actually quite goodmwink.gif

    Mama Stamberg's Cranberry Relish
2 cups whole raw cranberries, washed
    1 small onion
    3/4 cup sour cream
    1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons horseradish from a jar

I have a few favs. I got the recipe for the original Horn & Hardart's macaroni and cheese from Molly O'Neil's "New York" cookbook and that's always a winner. http://www.theautomat.com/inside/recipes/mc.html

For some variety I start up the smoker and make some smoked onions where you take large Spanish onions, core out the center and fill it with melted butter. I then mix in some garlic and oregano into the butter and smoke them for 4 hours, sweet and delicious. I also throw some portebello mushrooms on the smoker, drizzle them with extra virgin olive oil and throw on some fresh garlic, diced onions and basil on top of the mushrooms.

Linda likes grilled zucchini so I slice that thick, drizzle it with olive oil and grill them.

Sticky rice stuffing. We had the great pleasure of dining with a Chinese family one T-day, and we took from it this wonderful dish.

On the dessert end, Acorn cookies! Cookie dough shaped in the form of an acorn, dipped in chocolate to give it the cap.

    MMMmmmmmm.... :food

(I can bug the wife for recipes if anyone's interested)

    P.S. I can't believe there isn't a ":drool" icon!

Oh my, now that sounds amazing!! thumb.gif

I don't have a favorite dish, it's more so the stuff that's left on your plate after you eat and then you mix it all up together (bits of potato, turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, cream of celery, stuffing and all the other yummy thanksgiving foods). :ivar Mmmm so good! Too bad thanksgiving past about a month ago. mwink.gif But I guess now living in the US I can celebrate twice! wings.gif

My all time favorite is very basic - apple pie. Though, a little different from normal pie. 1 cup sugar 1 stick butter 1 cup flour (usually ends up being 1.5 cups flour, but that's the starting point), mix together with a fork until the butter has been fully mixed it. Make a cust out of that, bake it (I forget how long), put the applies in, put the remainder of the crust material on top, bake some more. It comes out very very good (the crust is like crumbs).
