    Only one?!

That's a spectacularly beautiful shot. Good work.

I was reading the thread leading up to it - the whole time I was thinking "at least he doesn't have to worry about getting grime in the mirror box when he changes lenses in there." clap.gif

How can you tell it's nicotine?

    I can't-

but I can tell you that the big irony of my job is that it is paid for by the tobacco companies (indirectly of course)-

I'm not a doctor; I'm not a research scientist; I have seen enough come in for carotid ultrasounds that smoked for years to believe that at least 75% of the ones that have moderate and more severe problems are caused by smoking, along with combinations of high cholesterol, diabetes, history of these kind of problems in the family-

not good enough for JAMA, please, quit being modest! You know as well as I do that just because it gets published in a scientific journal doesn't make it a good photo... as a matter of fact, science photos are usually more boring than a box of hair.

Great shot, looking forward to seeing more nod.gif

Especially if any of my suggestions got used lol3.gif

    Nice work, George.

The light looks like the yellow of Na lights in surgery to my eye.

I mentioned the 200 Macro Nikkor. Sounds like you got a front row seat.

interesting pic George. But I don't personally think that you're seeing any nicotine in there (as far as I know, it doesn't form/collect in any of the artery blocking plaques, but it may accelerate the chemical rxn's that induce the formation of these plaques). The bio geek part of me is curious though if you know if most of what you're seeing along the walls of the artery is the smooth muscle layer around the artery or part of the plaque? What were the docs trying to do that they had to open up the artery?

    George,
I take shots like this every day. This is a good first attempt and gives a good general feel for the surgical field.

The key with these shots is to get real close and be able to label easily identifiable structures. Your shot shows to much of the field and retractors with not enough of the area of interest.

I shoot mine with a 60mm or 105mm macro lens and a ring flash. I usually have the nurse keep an eye on me to warn me if I'm getting too close.eek7.gif

Not to mention the feedback on the image is excellent - I'd sure like to see the image.

I'm with the previous posts; I was warned about the B&G, so if my delicate sensibilities get offended it's my problem. I just love medical photography.

Who knew you guys would be interested in blood and guts?

I should start posting some of my surgical shots here. It looks like I would get a lot more response than from my portraits!ne_nau.gif

I feel so cheated. I read the first thread posted before the fact. Found this one this morning - no photo & no link.

I'm disappointed. I was looking forward to seeing the images.

    Oh well!

    Please put it back!

I am fascinated with surgery! Heck I WATCHED my own knee surgery, it was AWESOME! I also kept trying to get a peak in my wife's C-Section, I even held the camera up over the curtain a few times! The darn nurses kept telling me to sit down, they thought I would faint or something....

I can post Makayla's first moments, but unfortunately they are not particuarly good, I guess Dad was just to excited!

I hope my post with the barf-smilie wasn't a factor in George's decision. That was a perhaps poor attempt at humor on my part (and an excuse to use the smilie.) I was very much impressed by the image as I hope the rest of my post conveyed.

I apologize to all re my freaking curmudgeonly (thanks erik) self-

    1) no problem re patient-we have the release blahblah, but I jumped the gun on checking with the doc and getting his ok (which I have now)--

    2) it wasn't a problem with changing it to a link-I understood and I should have checked first-

    3) today four years ago my oldest son was killed and my wife and I have been in pretty bad shape leading up to today-one reason why I'm bipolar here on the forum-and so iffy on these pics-

    4) what I would like to do is build a gallery on this (450+ pics)(a lot redundant) with commentary and just keep a thread open with a link to it from here, if that's ok-

    5) I'm out of town until this weekend so I'll get started saturday-

    6) Andy, Shay, whomever, if you want to and can repost the link, please do-

    7) again, sorry-

first thought: "oh George, I'm so sorry". I hope I never have to deal with the gut wrenching that a loss of a child would bring. I doubt I would never fully be over it, so I understand the roller coaster you must be on right now.

we'll be here when you're ready and have time and I for one am looking forwards to seeing what you got.
