Hi Y'all,

They held a professional surfing competiton at Sebastian Inlet this week so I stopped by a couple of days and took a few pics. These are from the early elimination rounds.

Nice images, Harry..I especially like the first one. It really "pops" and has great water spray. How does the difficulty factor compare when shooting surfers vs. flying birds???

Thanks, that pic should pop as I used DavidTo's excellent tutorial on it. :D

Shooting surfing is an absolute breeze after shooting wildlife. You know where the surfers are going and its a snap to track them. Wildlife shooting has a much, much, higher degree of difficulty.

Thanks Colleen it was fun shooting the meet. I had been in a real slump lately and taking some crappy pictures so I needed a change of pace to get the juices flowing again. This was a nice change of pace and there were no gators to keep an eye out for. .

I like the first and last ones in particular, its as if you were in the water with them, considering it was only 1 or 2 ft on shore slop (east coast in other wordsrolleyes1.gif ) there excellent. what lens were you using

Thanks Ed, the waves were really wimpy that day so they needed some careful framing. I used the D2X with the 300mm F4 and 1.7 TC on these shots (handheld).

Thanks Ian. The surf was real wimpy, 2-3 feet. They were considering calling it off for the day but the next day's forecast was no better. I got some shots two days later with some much heavier surf.

    Nice Harry.

Although with surfing shots it's worth trying to get a feel or sense of the wave as well so always think about stepping back and not cropping so tightly, the last shot in the set you posted is one I like as it captures the feeling of gravity.

Thanks Andrew. There are some who like the tighter crop and others who like to get more a feel of the settings. I ended up taking around 11 gigs worth of shots on the two days I was at the meet and I'll be posting some of both.

I did not get there monday until 1100 ish. Here are a few from Sunday PM. Canon g5 p&s , I can see why you cropped close, as the waves look pitiful when you see them in context . Nothing like the surfing shots from hawaii :cry

#3 nice angle on the shot, the action is good, the composition is good, and most importantly the surfer has some style, but as for the rest...yeah tight. You usually only see shots that tight when they're taken from the water. Doesn't look like you had much to work with that day.

I konw you're just having fun with these, but to be honest - surfers don't want to see funny facial expressions. It's definatly not a selling point.
